Senate Republican have made sure Alcholol , Tobaaco, Firearms and Exposive Bureau does NOT get a confirmed boss for almost a decade….
But?
With the Mass shooting ‘s…
It looks like the President CAN get a confirmation this time….
The Senate Judiciary Committee deadlocked 11-11 on the nomination of Steven Dettelbach to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer could move to advance the nomination on the floor later Thursday.
“I cannot overstate the importance of having Senate-confirmed leadership at the top of the ATF. For stability and for responsiveness, for accountability, for agency morale, this is long overdue. I believe Steve Dettelbach is the person to get that done.”
— Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin (D-Ill.)
Nine of the 11 GOP members of the panel voted by proxy on the nomination.
ICYMI: Three members of the Democratic caucus — Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Angus King (I-Vt.) — have offered their support for the nominee after blanching at the prior one, David Chipman. That ensures Dettelbach has a path to confirmation even if he fails to garner any Republican votes.
Durbin noted the National Sheriffs Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police are among the law enforcement organizations to support the pick.
Notably, the first and so-far only confirmed ATF director, B. Todd Jones, won the Senate’s stamp of approval in 2013….
