A Perry Bacon Jr. Op-Ed in the Washington Post….
But there are also reasons to think that Trumpism appeals to a lot of Americans — that they are turning to this style of politics simply because they like it…
…
“That US fascism is racist and white supremacist is a given. That it is all-white is not. The assumption of static fascism blinds one to fascism organizing small but significant numbers in communities of color, particularly through Christian nationalism,” says Dartmouth professor Jeff Sharlet, who has written extensively about Christian fundamentalism in America. (The quote comes from an extended Twitter conversation that helped inspire this column.)
Relatedly, there is another very American reason that the radicalism of the current GOP might be popular: its reliance on anti-Black sentiment, which has been a critical force in other successful U.S. political movements. White voters, particularly in the South, coalesced around anti-Black sentiment after the Civil War, after the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, and again after the election of Barack Obama in 2008. As the Brookings Institution’s Vanessa Williamson wrote in an assessment of Trumpism in 2020, “Racial authoritarianism has existed within and alongside our democracy from the beginning.”
Today, right-wing attacks on Black Lives Matter, critical race theory, the New York Times’s 1619 Project, Supreme Court Justice-designate Ketanji Brown Jackson and other Black ideas and people are stoking a narrative that Black people are not only the main drivers of American problems — from struggling schools to crime — but are also insufficiently grateful about living in one of the richest nations in the world. Unfortunately, all signs are that it is working pretty well….
…
I don’t think the radicalized GOP is destined to win over the majority of Americans. The Democrats did win in 2018 and 2020, after all. But when I look at Trump and DeSantis, I see autocratic politicians whose messages resonate deeply with huge numbers of voters. I see the business community and other institutions underestimating the Trumpist threat but also acting cautiously because they have seen how DeSantis, Trump and other politicians of this ilk seek to use government power to punish those who cross them.
Note…
It HAS been my view that Donald Trump’s ‘Trumpism’ is just him pimping the Republican current party line…
Trump has always foamed at the mouth over authritarian leaders/rulers….
The guy IS a pretty good enforcer for HIS ego overall….
Not the party or ANYONE else…
He’s just borrowing the Grand ole Party…..

James finally finds someone to explain “Trumpism” to him.

You read my bottom note?
My Name Is Jack says
Yeah I read it . Same garbage you’ve been spreading for six years now.
Meaningless drivel.
Your stupid ,and there is no other word for it, contention that Trump isn’t a Republican is so belied by the simple facts of the last six years that it merits little comment other than to note its patent absurdity.
jamesb says
Oh, he IS a Republican….
Just like he was a Democrat….
TWICE….
Again?
He goes were it BENEFITS his ego and wallet…
Did u read about how President Trump asked about doing Gun Control TWICE….
But was told to drop it?
Or when he told people to GET shots?
Must have had some mind regressions, eh?
My Name Is Jack says
This is so funny.
This whole discussion began when I said that the Republican Party had been taken over by Trumpism.
Now?
You make my point.
So Trump used to be aDemocrat.Yes and you would think that might give Republicans pause. It doesnt. Why?They don’t care .They have been “Trumpized.”
Yes, Trump apparently talked about gun control measures, a real no no for Republicans.Trump does it and no one cares. Why?They are “Trumpized.”
He has advocated for Covid shots.Indeed he actually started the “warp speed” program.Lots of Republicans are opposed .Has it affected Trumps standing at all? No.Why?The Trumpism that pervades the Republican Party.
And finally your contention that he’s in it for the money.Sure he is!And the Republicans couldn’t care less.
Thank you for making my point.
The Republican Party is thoroughly “Trumpized.”
jamesb says
The issues I named where Democratic issues
He advanced them
He was told to abandon them
He did……
They were not Republican
If the party was ‘his’?
McConnell would NOT be the minority leader
Mile Pence would be on a farm in Indiana
Georgia’s Gov and Sec of State would be looking for new jobs
Trump’s attempt to become ‘the American King’ only goes but so far
THAT is ‘Trumpism’
jamesb says
I forgot the money angle
The Big Guy’s ‘hustle’ IS at the heart of this Bull Shit….
And the idiot’s give freely and often…
Right Now?
His lawyers gotta be busy and happy with their bank account’s

Following Trump could cost ya jail time….
