President Biden accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of “trying to wipe out the culture and identity of the Ukrainian people” in a speech to the U.S. Naval Academy’s graduating class on Friday, decrying Russian attacks on schools, hospitals and other civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.
Biden praised the power of global cooperation to counter Russian aggression, adding that Putin had “NATO-ized all of Europe” by prompting Sweden and Finland to seek membership in the defense alliance.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier accused Russia of executing “an obvious policy of genocide” in eastern Ukraine. The Russians’ goal is clear, Zelensky said — to raze more towns in Donbas to rubble, as they did in the southern city of Mariupol.
The mayor of Severodonetsk said Thursday that “fierce fighting” had broken out in the city, where the devastation had “almost” reached the level of Mariupol. By Friday, Russian forces controlled nearly two-thirds of the city’s perimeter, he said, and evacuation paths remained under fire. Meanwhile, Russia-backed separatists said they had gained control of Lyman, a railway hub in the Donetsk region.
