Russian forces failed to take three key areas in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk amid heavy shelling, Ukrainian military officials said Saturday, adding that the Russians were “not succeeding” and that the “fighting continues.”
The announcement comes alongside Western assessments that despite a new focus on the eastern region of Donbas, Moscow is still struggling with morale and supply concerns. The Pentagon described only “plodding progress” after fierce Ukrainian resistance.
The slow advance gives little sign that the conflict will end soon. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said there was a high chance of negotiations breaking down because of “Moscow’s playbook on murdering people.” Meanwhile, Western governments continue to funnel weapons to Ukrainian forces.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov walked back a number of recent comments about nuclear war, telling a Saudi-owned news channel that Russia does not consider itself to be at war with NATO. However, Russian nonproliferation official Vladimir Yermakov said Saturday that strategic dialogue with the United States has been “frozen” until after the conflict in Ukraine is over.
