Multiple people were shot on the platform of a Brooklyn subway station during the Tuesday morning rush, officials said, a violent episode that came amid fears about public safety as New York City struggles to recover from the pandemic.
The Fire Department said that 13 people were injured, several by gunfire. A law enforcement official said that five people were shot, and that the police were seeking a man with a gas mask and an orange construction vest.
Police and fire officials said that investigators were trying to determine the source of a smoke condition in the subway station and whether any explosive devices were detonated during the incident. A Police Department spokesman said that no active explosive devices had been found at the scene.
Police officers were called to the 36th Street subway station, where the D, N and R lines pass through the Sunset Park neighborhood, around 8:30 a.m., the Police Department said. They had also received reports of smoke inside the station.
Transit officials said that trains on the D, N and R lines would be delayed because of an investigation. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the city’s subway, said no additional details were immediately available.
Several schools near the scene of the shooting were put under “shelter in place,” — in which schools close their doors and prevent outside visitors, according to a spokesman for the Education Department. A shelter in place means a school closes its doors, outside visitors are not allowed and there is a heightened state of readiness.
Shootings in New York City have risen this year, and the uptick in violent gun crime has been a central focus for Mayor Eric Adams since he took office in January. Through April 3, shooting incidents rose to 296 from 260 during the same period last year, according to Police Department statistics….

There was a mass shooting at least 2 dead literally 2 blocks from my home in Elgin IL this weekend. It made the national news. Hopefully Congress will act on the out of control gun violence.

Brooklyn Subway shooting Update…..
Injuries are up to 29….,
The shooters gun was found and it jammed, probably cutting down the numbers of people shot.
The shooter had more than the two reported 2 smoke bombs.
There are reports that ride sharing services Uber and Lyft raised their prices for those stranded by the incident……

A 62-year-old man who railed against Mayor Adams and made bizarre threatening rants on YouTube has been identified as a person of interest in the savage Brooklyn subway attack that injured at least 29 people Tuesday morning, officials said.
Frank James — who warned last month that he was “entering the danger zone” — rented a U-Haul van tied to the N train attack in Sunset Park and is being sought for questioning, police said at an evening briefing.
“Mr. Mayor, I’m a victim of your mental health program,” James said in one lengthy video.
“I’m 63 now full of hate, full of anger, and full of bitterness.”
He also criticized the mayor for not doing more to combat homelessness…

At least nine people were wounded in a shooting at a restaurant in South Carolina on Sunday — the second mass shooting in the Palmetto State in as many days.
The shooting occurred Sunday morning at Cara’s Lounge Furman in rural Hampton County, about 50 miles northwest of Savannah, according to the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division, WTLX reported.
No deaths have been reported at this time, cops confirmed.
It’s not immediately clear what led to the shooting. Law enforcement has not released any further information.
The shooting is the second mass shooting over Easter Weekend. On Saturday, 14 people were injured after two shooters opened fire at the Columbiana Centre mall in Columbia.
Nine people were shot and five others were injured in the ensuing panic as shoppers fled for their lives. The injured ranged in age from 15 to 73 years old….
