If DeSantis were to were to run and defeat Trump for the Republican nomination his victory may be hollow indeed. The nomination fight would be brutal.
How many people here think Trump would simply go to the convention ,raise DeSantis’s arm in triumph and fade gently into that good night?
Yeah riiight!
Instead ,Trump would accuse the Republican Party of all sorts of treachery. He would denounce Desantis as having stolen the nomination from him.His domestic terrorist supporters would show up at the convention in what could be replay of Chicago in 68.
Recent polls show that almost 40% of admitted Republicans say they identify more with Trump than the Republican Party .A schism would be inevitable. With Trump or his designate as leader of these disaffected Republicans. With Trumps supporters already organized getting on the ballot in almost every state would be relatively easy
The campaign would be a bloodbath with Trump denouncing the RINOs that stole the nomination from him.Indeed his entire campaign would be to exact vengeance on DeSantis .
It could easily be rerun of 1912 where Teddy Roosevelt on the Bull Moose ticket actually got more votes than Taft, the Republican incumbent.
A fantasy you say?Sure, for now.
But something similar has to be on Desantis and his supporters mind.In essence, if Trump runs and the Republicans don’t nominate him? They are going to be in a Hell of a position….

He’s the Hill link for DeSantis calling a Trump issue ‘told bunk’…..
….
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is calling reports that his relationship with former President Trump has become increasingly frayed “total bunk” and arguing he has the former president’s full support….

“…there are no obvious options for Romney and the SMALL(emphasis added) handful of openly anti Trump Republicans in Congress ….they can support anti Trump Republicans in upcoming primary elections…But the truth is,the current dysfunctional Republican Party is a long way down the road they’ve chosen ,and there is no obvious way back.“

Bernstein also suggests a Romney 3rd Party bid with its expressed consent to doom the GOP if it nominates Trump could save the party, and our democracy, in the long run.
If it comes to that will Mitt do it?

Third Parties have NO chance in American President Politics….
Democratic Socialist Dave says
That’s not the point, James; a third party that draws votes away from Trump is a good thing. And that’s the threat it holds.
As Jack pointed out, only a minority of voters in most states favored the Democrat T. Woodrow Wilson in 1912, but (apart from Eugene V. Debs’ 900,000+ votes or 6% of the U.S. vote; 16% in Oklahoma), the official Republican, Pres. Wm Howard Taft, was pushed into 2nd or 3rd place everywhere but Vermont & Utah.
