The Trump administration engaged in “deliberate efforts” to undermine the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic for political purposes, a congressional report released Friday concludes.
The report, prepared by the House select subcommittee investigating the nation’s Covid response, says the White House repeatedly overruled public health and testing guidance by the nation’s top infectious disease experts and silenced officials in order to promote then-President Donald Trump’s political agenda.
In August of last year, for example, Trump hosted a White House meeting with people who promoted a herd immunity strategy pushed by White House special adviser Dr. Scott Atlas. The subcommittee obtained an email sent ahead of that meeting in which Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House Covid response coordinator, told the vice president’s chief of staff, Marc Short, that it was “a fringe group without grounding in epidemics, public health or on the ground common sense experience.” Birx also said in the email that she could “go out of town or whatever gives the WH cover” on the day of the meeting.
A few months later in October, National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Francis Collins called for “a quick and devastating published take down” of the herd immunity strategy, according to emails obtained and released by the subcommittee.
In an interview with the subcommittee, Birx said when she arrived to the White House in March 2020 — more than a month after the U.S. declared a public health emergency — she learned that federal officials had not yet contacted some of the largest U.S. companies that could supply Covid testing.
Birx also told the panel that Atlas and other Trump officials “purposely weakened CDC’s coronavirus testing guidance in August 2020 to obscure how rapidly the virus was spreading across the country,” the report said. The altered guidance recommended that asymptomatic people didn’t need to get tested, advice that was “contrary to consensus science-based recommendations,” it said, adding, “Dr. Birx stated that these changes were made specifically to reduce the amount of testing being conducted….

Almost half the party. Scary!
I am not being sarcastic, but why would they believe that? I can’t Imagine that the GOP’s neofascist “news” networks are promoting that idea? It will be too easy to eventually prove it wrong, and some Republicans would likely remember that they were lied to. Are these people QAnon believers?
It does help remind us that some Republicans might not be evil; they might be only stupid.

Indeed things like this seem to go right over his head .
Then he will respond to such with a post that has nothing to do with it.
I once made a heavily snide and sarcastic “defense” of James, totally slathered in insincerity. He thanked me for my kind words, which puzzled and sort of tickled me at the time.

Covid passed 700,000 deaths in October. We now have passed 800,000 deaths, and there are still many more to come. Being optimistic isn’t enough, and it is not even helpful.
Although I have already had my booster and I rarely go anywhere, I feel most likely I will get infected in 2022 – especially with my pre-existing condition which makes me much more susceptible to serious illness or death. Most likely some unvaccinated person somewhere who I probably don’t even know will infect me. And they probably won’t know it and won’t care – even if they did.
Sadly, the unvaccinated don’t care that they spread this disease, and usually won’t even admit it.
This is admittedly anecdotal and is just the experience of one person but seems to be congruent with reports out of South Africa…
My son contracted Covid last week .He lives in DC. While he works from home he ventures out To eat and occasionally to bars.He is fully vaccinated and had a booster.A week ago today he began feeling aches which he put down to his running.On Monday he had some minor congestion .He decided to take aCovid test which was positive.By late Tuesday the congestion had disappeared and was replaced by a headache which he described as much like a sinus headache.By late Wednesday the headache was gone and he had no further symptoms.During the whole episode he never lost his sense of taste or smell nor had a cough or fever.
Yesterday he tested negative.On a scale of 1 to 10 as to sickness, he described it as a 1.
He hailed the vaccines as being responsible for his minor bout with Covid.
I have been told similar stories from folks in Europe (where we are about to leave for) and South Africa.
A least a dozen people at our embassy in South Africa came down with this new strain and recovered in much the same way.
