Mark Meadows indicated in a Jan. 5 email that the National Guard was on standby to “protect pro Trump people,” according to an email obtained by the House committee investigating the Capitol riot and described in a public document Sunday night.
The context for the message is unclear, but it comes amid intense scrutiny of the Guard’s slow response to violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6 and conflicting timelines about their response from the Pentagon and National Guard leadership….

In other messages described by the committee, Meadows appears to have asked members of Congress to help connect Trump with state lawmakers.
“POTUS wants to chat with them,” Meadows said, according to documents obtained by the Jan. 6 committee and described publicly Sunday evening.
The messages also describe numerous contacts with members of Congress about Trump’s efforts to recruit state lawmakers and encourage them to help overturn the election results. They also included questions about Meadows’ exchanges with members of Congress as they pressed him urgently to issue a statement telling rioters on Jan. 6 to exit the Capitol.
Meadows’ attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The messages are the clearest insight yet into the conversations Trump was having with senior advisers in the chaotic months after his defeat in which he sought to cling to power in increasingly desperate ways…

In races for state and county-level offices with direct oversight of elections, Republican candidates coming out of the Stop the Steal movement are running competitive campaigns in which they enjoy a first-mover advantage in electoral contests that few partisans from either party thought much about before last November.
And legislation that state lawmakers have passed or tried to pass this year in a number of states would assert more control over election systems and results by partisan offices that Republicans already decisively control….

Republicans don’t care about any of this.
Breaking the law, hooliganism , lying, cheating, stealing ,anything in service to getting the party through their dear leader Donald Trump back in control is acceptable and indeed encouraged.
Pretty much like Reagan used to describe the Soviet Communist Party.
All the way down to their Orwellian use of the word “freedom” to mean authoritarian.

Perhaps a bigger concern, Jack, is that most Democrats don’t care about this. I saw a poll in the last couple of months (wish I remembered the details) that shows that Republicans say they are more afraid of Threats to Democracy than Democrats. Incredibly, a majority of Republicans believe the 2020 election was stolen from them and are concerned that Democrats will steal the next one too. And trump-supported election officials are being put in place to ensure that the results are what they want.
Democrats need to pay attention and, to the extent they can, act on these real threats to our democracy. Right now I am not optimistic.

It had Don Jr. and various Fox News hosts on 1/6 begging Meadows to get Trump to call off the crowds.
Shows that Trump has a much better handle on today’s Republican Party than the likes of his “intellectually challenged “son, big mouthed Right wing goofball Laura Ingram and lackey Brian Kilmeade.
Trump intuitively knew that today’s Republican Party is dominated by people to whom a little violence in the name of “gettin them libruls” would go over just fine and ,except for Cheney and a few other Republicans misgivings?Trump has been proven right.
The insurrection of Jan. 6 should have been a wake up call to what has happened to the Republican Party,instead all those hand wringers above and indeed the vast majority of the Republican Party have relegated it to much ado over nothing.

Why Holding Mark Meadows In Contempt Is a Big Deal
Jonathan Bernstein: “Meadows may or may not wind up being convicted, but he’ll probably join Steve Bannon in being indicted. Depending on how we count them, there have been about 34 White House chiefs of staff, and I think Meadows would be only the second to be indicted after H.R. Haldeman, who served 18 months in prison for crimes committed during the Watergate scandal.”
“To be sure: As crimes go, refusing to comply with a congressional subpoena isn’t all that big a deal. But we already know that Meadows was involved in former President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn an election, and it’s quite possible that his legal jeopardy extends beyond the contempt situation.”

“Donald Trump’s White House Chief of Staff and a national campaign spokesperson were involved in efforts to encourage the president’s supporters to march on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021,” Rolling Stone reports.
“That’s according to a person who says he overheard a key planning conversation between top Trump officials and the organizers of the Jan. 6 rally on the White House Ellipse — and has since testified to House investigators about the phone call.”
