Well….
Well….
The Biden Vice President has been under constant political fire for the past few months….
One would image that some people , women, minorities and maybe the President himself are NOT to happy that Harris is taking a political beatdown…
West Wing aides came to the defense of Vice President Harris following publication of a CNN report that detailed frustrations among the vice president’s team and more broadly among White House officials about her role in the administration.
“For anyone who needs to hear it. @VP is not only a vital partner to @POTUS but a bold leader who has taken on key, important challenges facing the country — from voting rights to addressing root causes of migration to expanding broadband,” White House press secretary Jen Psakitweeted late Sunday.
White House communications director Kate Bedingfield shared Psaki’s post on Monday morning, and White House chief of staff Ron Klain amplified multiple messages on Twitter supportive of Harris….

White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Wednesday didn’t hesitate to say “yes” when asked whether Vice President Kamala Harris was receiving more criticism because she is the first woman and woman of color to hold the office.
“I think there’s no question that the type of attacks — the attacks on her that certainly, being the first she is many times over, is part of that,” Psaki said in an interview with POLITICO’s senior editor for standards and ethics, Anita Kumar, as part of its inaugural Women Rule Exchange….

VP Harris is losing several staff members…
THAT pumps up questions about her management style and political future….
….the quartet of soon-to-be-empty desks reignited questions about why Harris churns through top-level Democratic staff, an issue that has colored her nearly 18 years in public service, including her historic but uneven first year as vice president. Now, those questions about her management extend to whether it will hamper her ability to seek and manage the presidency….

Conventional wisdom about sitting Vice Presidents winning elections to succeed the President they serve with is just wrong It’s only happened four times (John Adams 1796, Jefferson 1800, Van Buren 1836 and George H.W. Bush 1988) — in fact it’s half as likely as succeeding through a President’s death or resignation (Nixon’s resignation + the 8 deaths of W.H. Harrison, Taylor, Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Harding, FDR & JFK).
Nixon did not run in 1960, nor did Biden in 2008. Humphrey failed narrowly in 1968, as did Gore in 2000. Mondale, Quayle and Pence ran with their respective President for a second term (which seems most likely for Biden-Harris in 2024). On the other hand, John Nance Garner in 1940 and Alben Barkley in 1952 each actually ran unsuccessfully against their Presidents for the Democratic nomination.)
Several institutional and political forces work against the Vice President’s successful election to the White House. If a VP disagrees too loudly with the sitting President, he or she will alienate significant support (e.g. Humphrey and the War in 1968). But a loyal or silent VP will share little credit for the President’s successes yet much blame for the President’s failures.
And Chester Arthur in 1884 was the last one-term President who retired without seeking re-election (although reluctantly). Nothing is written into stone (cf. GHW Bush winning from the Vice Presidency in 1988), so Joe Biden’s age and decline in popularity (plus possible failure with health, the economy and foreign relations) may persuade him not to seek re-election; but there’s also no guarantee that Kamala Harris would win the Democratic nomination to succeed him.

I would note that Nixon Did run in 1960 losing narrowly to JFK and in 1952Truman never actually announced his candidacy ,thus Barkley wasn’t running against him.
With those two corrections, I agree with the essence of this post. This assumption that if Biden doesn’t run again that Harris will automatically become the Democratic candidate seems rather unique to the present time.Would she be a candidate?Likely but the continuing posts here about her alledged “problems” are usually cast as an issue for the Democrats ,as if she is already the anointed successor .In my view ,there would likely be a robust campaign to succeed Biden if he doesn’t run within the Democratic Party with Harris one of several candidates.

I doubt Harris will be the nominee if Biden chooses not to run. She did rather poorly during her 2020 campaign.
Scott P says
Biden ran rather poorly in his previous Presidential primary runs before becoming VP too. Past isn’t necessarily prologue in these situations.
Zreebs says
That is true, but because of the pandemic he was able to run for president in 2020 without having to schedule many campaign events. So his weakness as an ineffective campaigner didn’t really show. I don’t expect that he will be as lucky in 2024.
jamesb says
Biden BEST help in getting his current job was Donald J.Trump…..
NOT the pandemic…
People stood on line during the virus…..
My feelings g is if Trump runs again?
Joe Biden is a LOCK for a second term no matter how much those Trump supporters try to steal things in Red states…
jamesb says
And yes Z…..
Biden is NOT the charismatic person Obama or even Trump was….
THAT helped him get his day job…
jamesb says
Again?
In his heart?
Joe Biden is a legislator not an executive….
Keith says
Bullshit James.
jamesb says
Your view Keith….
Fact?
Joseph R. Biden HAS been a lawmaker for decades (36 years)….
Worker in the system…
Except for committee chair ….
Wasn’t a leader of much except his office….
Was VP to Obama for 8 years…..
Worker FOR the President…But that could be countered on second thought as ‘learning’…
Just giving the facts …..
jamesb says
I voted for the guy….
I’d vote for him again…
I liked him before he ran this time…
But I stand by my view that he’s a background guy….
NOT the one that easily leads the charge….
THAT is the complaint by some Democrats right now….
Keith says
Joe Biden was the only candidate who could have beaten Trump. Can I prove that, no, but I can provide some very logical political arguments why.
He ran a brilliant campaign while his opponents ran around the country trying to undercut each other. Who can forget Sanders going to Massachusetts to take it away from Warren and in the end Biden won it.
As far as these Kamala stories go, she has always been underestimated through out the years, and I have known her for 20.
She wasn’t supposed to win as DA, Attorney General, or for the Senate. Yes California is left leaning, but it’s a microcosm of America. So she’s loved and hated. Don’t count her out.
jamesb says
Yes ole Joe did the right thing by just being ‘himself’….
True THAT Keith….
Harris WOULD have to pull a rabbit out of a hat like u point out if her bass doesn’t run…
And of course she WILL be in the mix…
Even if some of us doubt that rabbit will appear for the audience….
But we’ve ALL got things right and wrong in the past….
Zreebs says
I think it is worth noting that gOP extremists won the elections in 80, 84 and 16, while GOP moderates (by GOP standards) lost the elections in 2008 and 2012.
A Democratic nominee can win if they both have charisma and a strong message. Without charisma, the Democrat will be defined by the GOP.

VP Harris on her job
Quote of the Day
“There is nothing about this job that is supposed to be easy. If something is coming to me, it’s because it needs to be addressed and because, by definition, it’s not going to be easy. If it was easy, it would have been handled before it comes to me.”
— Vice President Kamala Harris, quoted by the San Francisco Chronicle
jamesb says
If Biden does not run for a second term there will be a Democratic free for all….

VP Harris maybe in a stronger place if her boss don’t run then we think
