I know it’s early….
And yea Donald Trump tops the list….
But here’s something from The Washington Post on the subject anyways….
Check out the rankings for #3 and #4….
A bit of a surprise against Trump’s wishes?
- Trump
- DeSantis
- Haley
- Scott
- Pence
Below are our extremely early rankings of who could be in the running for it — with the important caveat that most or all of the first nine probably don’t run if No. 1 does. As usual, this is in order of how likely their nomination would seem to be.
Also mentioned: Rick Scott, Kristi L. Noem, Josh Hawley, Glenn Youngkin, Liz Cheney, Larry Hogan, Tom Cotton…

This is the funniest thing I’ve seen of late.
Nikki Haley?
Trump despises her.His followers despise her.Hell she would Be hard pressed to win S.C.,!
Maybe Trump won’t run?
But the Republicans sure as Hell aren’t going to nominate someone who he actively opposes.

So yesterday all the House Republicans, except two, voted in favor of a psychopath who publicly encouraged the murder of a House Member and the President of the United States. The job growth numbers were revised upwards by almost 700K new jobs last summer (unemployment is historically low). People are spending record amounts for Christmas (but inflation). A new vaccine pill is on order (take note James). The supply chain is recovering.
And our host is still fixated on his obsession to somehow “prove” Donald Trump will not be the Republican nominee in 2024.
How about talking about some real news like the virus is spiking again, stupid people need to be vaccinated, and vaccine mandates are effective and good public policy.

Keith?
Biden would run the BEST against Donald Trump who he beat the pants off a year ago….

And Liz Cheney and Larry Hogan have been “mentioned.”
Well I imagine they have..
By Liz Cheney and Larry Hogan!

What about all the ghastly possibilities (political, policy and moral) if, under a merciful Providence, Trump doesn’t run:
Gov. Greg Abbott, Texas
Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas
Gov. Ron De Santis, Florida
Gov. Doug Ducey, Ariz.
….
Let alone what’s more likely regardless of Trump: Speaker McCarthy and Majority Leader McConnell.

In my view, presently, there is just as good a chance that Trump will run ,as there is that Biden will seek re-election.
jamesb says
Yup….

Agreed. It’s two years and a few months until the first primaries.
Both Biden and Trump could run or neither could be candidates.
In fact I think the latter is a more likely scenario than most might think right now.
Zreebs says
In my opinion, there seems little doubt to me that Trump will run again. He is the current leader of the party. Biden will also likely run again. I haven’t seen anything that would suggest otherwise- other than his poor favorability rating.

Trump has a several legal minefields to cross…..
And his own bull shit to deal with
And?
His numbers ARE declining across the board even if he IS still the Pied Pipper for ‘Most’ GOPer’s
Scott P says
At this point yes. But a lot of things can change in two years.

… and the 2022 mid-terms will offer little guide as to whether Biden will seek and/or gain re-election.
The only President since FDR to gain Congressional seats for his party in the first mid-term after his own first election was George W. Bush in 2002; and he won not only a plurality but an absolute majority in 2004.
¶ Truman lost control of the House in 1946, but beat Dewey handily in 1948.
¶ Ike won control of Congress when elected in 1952 only to lose it in 1954 and then win an even bigger majority for himself in 1956.
¶ LBJ (special situation) won a landslide for the White House and Congress in 1964, but lost many seats in 1966, and ultimately did not seek re-election in 1968.
¶ Nixon was narrowly elected in 1968 and lost seats in 1970, but won his own landslide in 1972.
¶ The GOP lost badly in the 1974 Watergate mid-terms, and Ford lost very narrowly to Carter in 1976.
¶ Carter lost seats in 1978 and was trounced by Reagan in 1980.
¶ Reagan lost seats in 1982 but easily won re-election in 1984.
¶ George H.W. Bush lost seats in 1990 and lost re-election in 1992.
¶ Bill Clinton lost control of Congress in the Gingrich landslide of 1994, but won re-election in 1996.
¶ George W. Bush gained seats in 2002 and won an absolute majority in 2004. (However the GOP lost control of Congress in 2006.)
¶ Barack Obama’s party lost seats in 2010, but he won re-election (a very rare second absolute majority) in 2012.
¶ Donald Trump lost seats in 2018 and re-election in 2020.
