Several of us including Nate Silver HAS been saying this for more that week….
The media just focuses on the worst area’s….
But the country seems to be thru a second spike with the Delta variant that never matched the Covid-19 worst….
This does NOT mean things are over…
They aren’t…
But unlike the Covid high point….
The country has not shut down and is dealing with things with vaccines, masks and some social distancing ….
Good news indeed….
Let’s wait and see what happens with kids going back to school and winter bringing people inside again…
The NY Times piece points to something that maybe recurring….
The viruses spiking in two month cycle’s….
There is obviously no guarantee that the trend will continue. But there is one big reason to think that it may and that caseloads may even soon decline.
Since the pandemic began, Covid has often followed a regular — if mysterious — cycle. In one country after another, the number of new cases has often surged for roughly two months before starting to fall. The Delta variant, despite its intense contagiousness, has followed this pattern….
…
After Delta took hold last winter in India, caseloads there rose sharply for slightly more than two months before plummeting at a nearly identical rate. In Britain, caseloads rose for almost exactly two months before peaking in July. In Indonesia, Thailand, France, Spain and several other countries, the Delta surge also lasted somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 months.
And in the U.S. states where Delta first caused caseloads to rise, the cycle already appears to be on its downside. Case numbers in Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Missouri peaked in early or mid-August and have since been falling…
…
Whatever the reasons, the two-month cycle predated Delta. It has repeated itself several times in the U.S., including both last year and early this year, with the Alpha variant, which was centered in the upper Midwest…
…
In the U.S., the start of the school year could similarly spark outbreaks this month. The country will need to wait a few more weeks to know…..
A strong study to confirm mask usage….
Its authors say this provides conclusive, real-world evidence for what laboratory work and other research already strongly suggest: mask-wearing can have a significant impact on limiting the spread of symptomatic covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.
“I think this should basically end any scientific debate about whether masks can be effective in combating covid at the population level,” Jason Abaluck, an economist at Yale who helped lead the study, said in an interview, calling it a “a nail in the coffin” of the arguments against masks….
…
But existing research could have a significant impact on future policy — and may raise questions about past policy, too.
In this research, “people were given masks and then told they were expected to wear them,” Ranney said. Something similar almost transpired in the United States. In April 2020, during the Trump administration, the Postal Service made plans to send five masks to every American household. But that strategy was abandoned.
“One of the things I wonder … if we had all been sent masks the same way” as participants in this study were, Ranney said, “would we have decreased the death toll from covid?”
My Name Is Jack says
The CDC is “asking” unvaccinated people to not travel this Labor Day weekend.
When in the Hell will we ever learn?
These bastards don’t give a damn what these government agencies say! They think it’s part of the “conspiracy.”
jamesb says
The number of newly reported virus case’s continue to have leveled off from several weeks ago…..
Link….
53% of Americans are reportedly fully vaccinated as of today
jamesb says
A Good piece on the challenge of moving ahead as virus cases level off and decline with the fall coming and school’s reopening….
My Name Is Jack says
From the New York , Sept.5 (correcting this totally false post wherein our moderator ,a well known virus spreader himself erroneously claimed that the virus was “leveling off)…14 day change:
Cases…up 8%
Hospitalizations…up 11%
Deaths…up 55%
Notes:
The country is averaging 1500 deaths a day for the first time in six months.
Growing outbreaks in the Midwest,Northeast, anf mid Atlantic have offset declining case numbers in parts of the South
Conclusion? When this virus spreader (probably trying to justify his non vaccinated status with some made up “good news?Ignore him and oh yes I guess uh Nate Silver too!)
jamesb says
Well Jack good try….
But the REALITY IS that’reported’ virus cases have crated to the extent that the virus stories in the media are not even the headlines….
This does NO mean the virus is gone…
It isn’t…
Even in Red states….
The numbers ARE falling….
You choose the NY Times numbers which are wildly misleading and not as specific as the WashPost….
I have continually posted the WashPost numbers here…
Todays summary.…
In the past week in the U.S. …
New daily reported cases rose 3.2%
New daily reported deaths rose 29.1%
Covid-related hospitalizations fell 2.4%
Among reported tests, the positivity rate was 9.7%.
The number of tests reported fell 30.7% from the previous week.
Mid August summary.…
In the past week in the U.S. …
New daily reported cases rose 23.8%
New daily reported deaths rose 21.9%
Covid-related hospitalizations rose 21.8%
Among reported tests, the positivity rate was 9.5%.
The number of tests reported rose 3% from the previous week.
…
As one CAN see?
The number of ‘reported’ cases and hospitazations have dropped dramatically….Even the ‘reported’ deaths have declined
The state ‘s counties where things ARE the worst are states that do NOT push vaccines, masks or distancing….
Who, Tex, Fla, Ky, Tenn, W.Va….
What do those states have in common?
And the early August spike was less than half the worst Jan this year before the shots kicked in
As I have always said Jack…..
I like you because you make me better….
Your conclusion is incorrect…..
But thanks for having me correct you….
One hopes that going back to school and the winter does not induce another spike….
My Name Is Jack says
Oh I see,
You decide which “sources” you like. All others? No good.
I see I see.
Some more information on the virus that you won’t read from the virus spreaders .selective “sources:”….
Canada and the EU have passed the US in vaccinated individualsJapan will soon and Brazil is already ahead in first doses.
The virus spreader is doing all he can here to take the heat off himself for being either an anti vaxxer or a mere coward scared to get a shot.He has consistently downplayed this pandemic( in the early days he was yakking about a miracle vaccine that was going to be ready last summer!).As the Times piece points out and as most medical people cocur, this variant will spread in the other areas of the country as it declines somewhat in the south(note that today, SC is the number one state in the country fir per capita new cases.)
jamesb says
Nice try Jack…..
But the facts speak for themselves…..
jamesb says
And the ‘facts’ are hopeful….
Amen❗️
It’s about time…..
jamesb says
From the NY Times.…
And in the U.S. states where Delta first caused caseloads to rise, the cycle already appears to be on its downside. Case numbers in Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Missouri peaked in early or mid-August and have since been falling…
…
Keith?
The OVERALL ‘reported’ virus case numbers have leveled and ARE declining….
THAT IS a fact……
53% of Americans are reported to be fully vaccinated
47% Not at all….
Governor’s of Red states are fighting mandating mask usage for adults and students….
My Name Is Jack says
Wait !Niw the New York Times is “good” source?
But Homer this was you an hour or so again…
“…New York Times numbers aren’t wildly misleading…”
So an hour later?
They are no longer “misleading ?
I see I see.
Anyone who can say “amen “ as 1500 people a day are dying as cases continue to increase and hospitals are at the breaking point while he personally refuses to contribute to ending this national health emergency by getting vaccinated is contemptible.
jamesb says
Jack?
U gave the NY Times
Just wanted to let U know how their people feel
About things…..
Ur reaching…..
I assume ur trying to divert to me and the Times and ur conceding the ‘fact’ that the numbers for the most part ARE declining?
As the person in the Times is saying ?
This IS the reason i point out the Times numbers ARE MISLEADING……
Even their own people confirm this….
My Name Is Jack says
So the New York Times admitted their numbers were “misleading.”
I see I see,,,
Look Homer,as usual, you are misrepresenting what’s happening.
As the Times correctly pointed out ,while the numbers are slowly coming down in “some” ,not all ,of the southern states ,where this latest wave was centered and has been raging for almost two months(not in S.C. for instance) numbers are rising in the northeast .midwest and mid Atlantic as the wave continues ,particularly as school starts .
Unlike the earlier waves Homer much of the rising number in cases is attributable to school children .Accordingly this spike is to be expected.
We can also expect a spike in cases in a few weeks attributable to Labor Day get togethers. As has been noted, holidays have always shown a spike since the pandemic began.
This pandemic is far from over and to have a boob like you spreading misinformation as well as contributing to the problem by refusing to get vaccinated himself is contemptible as I stated earlier.
jamesb says
Ah Jack
I have said over and OVER things are NOT OVER….
There is ALWAYS gonna be a virus..
In Southern Red stares things are worst then orher states snd their of oaks seem to be doing their best to NOT help things
Bit even in those state’s
Their ‘reported’ number’s are leveling
Of course the governors CAN ‘fix’ THEOR numbers
Zreebs says
COVID-19 deaths now over 650,000. More daily deaths now than a year ago at this time when we didn’t have a vaccine. Who would have predicted this?
Keith says
This growth is all among the unvaccinated. Pathetic that people still refuse to get vaccinated.
My Name Is Jack says
Since the virus spreader has now vouched for the New York Times, there’s this…
“A summer that began with plunging caseloads and real hope that the worst of Covid 19 had passed is ending with soaring death counts, full hospitals and a bitter realization that the coronavirus is going to remain a fact of American Life for the foreseeable future.”
But here?Nothing but “amen.”
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Adults laughed at a teenager at a school-board meeting in Rutherford County, Tennessee, on Tuesday as he shared a devastating COVID-19 experience, video shows.
Grady Knox, a junior at Central Magnet School in Murfreesboro, was speaking out in favor of a mask mandate in his school, local news outlet WSMV reported.
“I’m worried about my family,” he said. “If I get COVID, I’m going to bring it to my family, and I talk to my grandparents a lot. They’re higher risk than me, so I don’t want to give them COVID.”
He specifically singled out his grandmother.
“This time last year, my grandmother, who was a former teacher at the Rutherford County school system, died of COVID because someone wasn’t wearing a mask,” he said, prompting laughter from some of the adults in the room.
Knox tried to continue speaking but was cut off by the jeering. A woman in the background can be seen laughing, smirking, and shaking her head, while another person is heard shouting, “Shut up!”
The chair of the board interrupted and urged the crowd to “act professional,” asking Knox to continue….
