Three Federal /State stimulus programs stop paying….
We’ll see how this loss of money effects the job market for America….
Businesses ARE begging for more staff…..
Will more people go back to work?
The economy is NOT as strong as some thought it was also….
Will the loss of income set off a slowing in consumer spending?
Will Democrats in Congress try to put in place a new round of unemployment stimulus increases?
And finally?
What is the political effect of this?
The cessation of this jobless aid, first put in place by Congress nearly 18 months ago, could upend the lives of millions of Americans still struggling to find work at a time when the pandemic’s delta variant is wreaking fresh havoc across a number of states. It could also lead to a sharp pullback in spending, particularly in certain areas of the country, impacting a wide range of restaurants and other businesses that rely on consumer dollars.
“I don’t understand how anyone in Washington cannot know normal people, their friends, families, cousins who are going through this,” said Kathleen Fox, a producer in New York whose past work has been recognized with a prestigious Peabody Award but who has struggled to find work after the pandemic upended her industry. “The [Biden] administration has lost interest in this cause and they’ve moved on to other things.”….

Michelle Wu in a commanding position in the Boston mayoral race, new Suffolk/Globe poll shows
¶Janey, Essaibi George, and Campbell in tight race for second in final week of preliminary election
By Meghan E. Irons, Boston Globe Staff,
Updated September 7, 2021, 12:00 a.m.
As early voting swings into motion, a new poll shows City Councilor Michelle Wu of Roslindale with a commanding lead over her competitors, confirming the findings of other recent surveys that point to a battle brewing for second place in the preliminary contest for Boston mayor.
With roughly a week to go before Tuesday’s preliminary election, Wu sits atop of the pack with 31 percent, outside the poll’s margin of error, according to the Suffolk University and Boston Globe poll of 500 likely voters. Wu’s standing is an improvement over where she was in June, when a Suffolk/Globe poll found her with support from 23 percent of likely voters.
Three other contenders are bunched together in the race for second place — Kim Janey, who is the acting mayor, at 20 percent; and City Councilors Annissa Essaibi George at 19 percent and Andrea Campbell at 18 percent. John Barros, the city’s former chief of economic development, trails far behind at 3 percent.
Janey’s standing actually decreased by 2 percentage points, while Essaibi George and Campbell gained support, since the June poll. The top two finishers in the Sept. 14 preliminary will face off against each other on Nov. 2.
The survey suggests that Wu has a clear path toward advancing to the Nov. 2 final, said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, which conducted the poll. “Her margin is bigger than the remaining undecideds and [the number of people refusing to take the survey]. This establishes her position and it really makes the final week of the mayor’s race about number two.”
As the window closes on voting, Paleologos said that a pair of upcoming debates — one Wednesday, the other Thursday — could help voters on the fence make a decision about whom to embrace. Turnout is expected to be low, as it historically is in preliminary municipal elections, and the so-called “soft voters” — those who have at least two favorites in the race — and undecided voters could be the key factors in the election….

MANDATE FOR CITY OF BOSTON
August 27, 2021
PUBLISHED BY:
MAYOR’S OFFICE
The City will address the COVID-19 Delta variant through a five-point plan.
Mayor Kim Janey today announced face masks will be required in all indoor public settings in the City of Boston, as part of a Five-Point Plan for the Delta Variant, a more contagious COVID-19 variant that is now the primary strain of the virus. The public health order, issued by the Boston Public Health Commission, is effective at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, August 27 in the City of Boston. The City is implementing this proactive public health plan to mitigate community transmission of the Delta variant, ahead of the arrival of more than 50,000 college students from across the country and a return to school for more than 50,000 Boston Public Schools students. Most of the 100,000 children who live in the City of Boston are too young to be eligible for vaccination.
“There is nothing more important than Boston’s safe recovery, reopening, and renewal from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor Janey. “We know that masks work best when everyone wears one. Requiring masks indoors is a proactive public health measure to limit transmission of the Delta variant, boost the public confidence in our businesses and venues, and protect the residents of our city who are too young for vaccination.” …

Former U.S. Sen. Adlai Stevenson III (D-Ill.) has died, and former interim U.S. Sen. Mo Cowan (D-Mass.; remember him?) has a new job.
¶ Former U.S. Sen. Adlai E. Stevenson III, the fourth generation of an iconic Illinois Democratic political family to hold public office and who lost the closest governor’s race in state history, died Monday in his Chicago home. He was 90.
Stevenson — the namesake of a great-grandfather who served as 23rd vice president of the United States and of a father who served as Illinois’ 31st governor and twice ran as the Democratic nominee for president — represented Illinois in the U.S. Senate from 1970 through 1981.
His wife of 67 years, Nancy Stevenson, confirmed his death.
“When he was in the Senate, he didn’t go to a lot of fancy dinners. He came home to dinner with the family,” she said. “That was his first and constant concern, the family.”
Stevenson’s political career began when he was elected in 1964 as a member of the Illinois House on the famous “bedsheet” ballot, where all candidates ran for at-large statewide seats because of redistricting problems.
He then successfully ran for Illinois treasurer in 1966, holding that office until November 1970 when he won a special U.S. Senate election following the death of Republican Sen. Everett Dirksen a year earlier.
Stevenson easily defeated Republican Ralph Tyler Smith, who had been appointed to the seat, taking 58% of the vote. After finishing Dirksen’s term, Stevenson won reelection in 1974, then decided not to run again in 1980. He stepped aside in January 1981 for fellow Democrat Alan Dixon, who won the November election.
In 1982, Stevenson ran for governor. He had initially sought the Democratic Party’s backing for the office in 1968, but was brushed aside by then-Mayor Richard J. Daley. The 1982 matchup would go down as the tightest race for governor in Illinois history, with Stevenson losing by less than 1 percentage point — 5,074 votes to be exact — to Republican incumbent James R. Thompson….
In 1986, Stevenson sought a rematch. After winning the party’s nomination in the primary, he abandoned the Democratic ticket after Mark Fairchild and Janice Hart, followers of political extremist Lyndon LaRouche, won the nomination for lieutenant governor and secretary of state, respectively.
Stevenson instead mounted a third-party candidacy on the ticket of the Illinois Solidarity Party, which all but ensured the clobbering Thompson gave him on his way to winning a historic fourth term in office. The Illinois AFL-CIO endorsed Thompson in 1986, a rare backing of a Republican in a statewide race by a traditional and politically powerful Democratic ally in organized labor.
In both campaigns, Stevenson suffered from a charisma deficit compared with the more convivial Thompson….
In his bids for governor, the youngest Stevenson often said he was born to run for office and often referenced the political debt he owed his famous father.
In his 2017 interview with the Tribune, Stevenson noted that his son, executive Adlai Stevenson IV, and grandson Adlai Stevenson V didn’t seem inclined to follow his footsteps into politics.
“My father said he was ‘born with an incurable hereditary disease of politics,’” Stevenson said. “Apparently, the disease has been cured.”…

¶ Former interim US senator William “Mo” Cowan is leaving General Electric to take a job in October at Devoted Health, a fast-growing provider of Medicare services located in Waltham.
Cowan is one of the most well-known executives in the company’s Boston headquarters among local civic and business leaders, and he’s also one of the state’s most prominent Black corporate executives. He will become chief legal and external affairs officer at Devoted Health, a Medicare Advantage provider founded four years ago by brothers Ed and Todd Park….
Cowan was an attorney at law firm Mintz Levin before joining the administration of then-Governor Deval Patrick, first as legal counsel and then as chief of staff. Patrick appointed him interim US senator in 2013, taking over when John Kerry was named secretary of state. Cowan served in the Senate for about six months, until Ed Markey took over after winning the special election for the seat.
Cowan went back to Mintz Levin to work for its lobbying arm, ML Strategies, eventually as its chief executive. …

California is a very Democratic state, and the idea of claiming that the race was somehow stolen if of course ridiculous. However, next year, I’d be happy to see Antonio Villaraigosa or some other high stature Democrat(Kamala Harris, maybe?) successfully Primary Newsom out of office. The fact that Newsom had the ability to inflame tensions to the point of bringing on the present farce speaks volumes negatively about what kind of leader he is, even if he happens to be right about the big issues.

I see that the CEO of Sales Force is paying relocation costs of employees who want to flee Texas in light of the draconian anti-abortion laws Abbott put into place. Controversial right-wing Pastor Greg Locke attacked members of his church who criticize him for using his sermons to discuss politics, calling them “judgmental,” “cowards” and “hypocrites.”
Footage of his Sunday sermon, posted on Twitter by Right Wing Watch, features Locke, the head of Global Vision Bible Church in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, calling out churchgoers who have said he “is too outspoken politically” during his sermons.
Locke said he is “bothered” by this, telling them they are free to leave. He dismissed the criticism, saying that in a sermon that could last for up to 45 minutes to one hour, he only mentions politics for a few minutes.
“We’ve got some people under the tent right now. You have the hardest time keeping your mouth shut about your church, so I’m going to sit here for about 15 seconds and just give you a chance to leave anytime you want to, because we need your seat anyhow,” he said…
“If you think I’m going to stop just because you want me to, you’ve lost your mind,” he said. “I’m just getting started. I’m just now calling out Joe Biden. I’m just now preaching against the LGBTQ community. I’m just now calling out abortion. I’m just now talking about election fraud. I’m just talking about Antifa and Black Lives Matter. I’m just now calling out this wicked nonsense.”
Locke has frequently spoken about politics during his controversial sermons. In June, a speech in which he claimed President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are overseeing “child-trafficking” went viral, being viewed more than 1.5 million times.

Callous Republican of the Day…
… or tax cuts as incentives for the wealthy; benefit cuts to make the poor work at low wages. (The GOP and investor- class approach to redistribution of wealth and income.)
Heaven forbid raising wages to recruit more labor; God forbid letting the Democrats make the rich start paying more taxes again.
Sad thing is that many working stiffs will vote for Gary Cohn’s old boss, DJT.
Gary Cohn, a key architect of former President Trump’s 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, has a new mission.
“We now need to get people back into the workforce and we need to force people in many respects to re-enter the workforce,” Cohn told Yahoo Finance Live.
Cohn said he is worried the current shortage of labor threatens to undermine the ability of American businesses to compete at home and globally. The U.S. Department of Labor’s latest JOLTS report showed there are almost 11 million job openings and roughly 8.4 million unemployed people in the United States.
“I think it’s a huge issue right now, as you point out, labor demand is far outpacing labor supply,” Stifel Chief Economist Lindsey Piegza said. But getting the unemployed back on the job, “it’s not going to be a very fast or flip the switch scenario,” Piegza added.
Cohn points to recent earnings reports from Darden Restaurants (DRI) and FedEx (FDX) which highlighted labor shortages as an issue impeding their growth. “They’re not looking for that skilled of a labor force, they need a labor force that’s willing to come to work,” he said.
Federally funded pandemic related unemployment benefits expired at the beginning of September. But various states have extended eviction moratoriums and other measures, like prohibiting utilities from cutting off service for customers who fall behind on their bills. Democrats in Congress are also planning to introduce legislation to restore and extend COVID-19 unemployment benefits into next year.
“I think we have to stop many of these programs at a high level that are encouraging people to stay home and start encouraging to reenter the workforce,” Cohn said….
