Things ARE beginning to pile up for the nation’s 46th President who has been riding an approval wave 10% points about the last guy….
President Biden has increasing issue drags on immigration, the economy, masks/shots, people going back to work, inflation and….The Israelis and Hamas going at it…
Oh, and some progressives grumbling about him actually trying to smouge Republicans …
This for a guy who said to take A LOT of time making calls…
The Biden administration faces a barrage of major challenges in the coming week — jitters about the economy, violence in the Middle East, uncertainty over the post-mask stage of the pandemic — for a president who generally requires a lot of time to deliberate.
ON THE ECONOMY:
— Right now, the Biden administration is “struggling to find a clear message” amid “anxiety-inducing data on prices and jobs,” as Victoria Guida, Christopher Cadelgo and Natasha Korecki report:
“Treasury Secretary JANET YELLEN spooked markets this month when she said interest rates could rise if the economy heated up too much — then clarified a few hours later that it wasn’t a prediction,” the trio write. “President JOE BIDEN held a press conference to discuss a disappointing jobs report, then circled back three days later to address the issue again, suggesting to some that he was concerned about public reaction. And the president has called for his multi-trillion-dollar infrastructure package to be paid for with tax hikes, which indicates that he’s worried about too much spending even as the administration downplays both inflation and deficit fears.” Read the full article
— Republicans are grabbing onto inflation fears to warn against Biden’s plans for massive stimulus and infrastructure spending, per the FT.
— FLASHBACK, via Reuters: “As the 1970s show, high joblessness and rising prices [like] the U.S. saw in April can be a potent political force. Republicans crafted a ‘misery index’ out of the two factors to attack then-president JIMMY CARTER. After hitting 75% approval ratings early in his presidency, the Democrat was trounced in a 1980 landslide.”…

jamesb says
The mumbling increases….
Some Democrats and economists have begun to worry that President Biden, intent on FDR-like transformation of a wounded America, is doing too much, too fast.
Why it matters: Some economists fear that all this spending will crank up inflation, and put Biden’s economic legacy at risk.
You see this in complaints by employers— along with some early data, and loads of anecdotal evidence —that people aren’t taking jobs because of the boost to unemployment payments.
You see this in the news that budget deficits in states weren’t nearly as bad as expected. “Let the good times roll!” says an L.A. Times headline this weekend. “Gusher of stimulus funds a gift for governors like Gavin Newsom.”
Yet Biden still wants to spend more….

Scott P says
Definitely a long shot to win the GOP primary in my opinion.
Actually the more mainstream conservatives are happy to see him in the race to split the far right nutso vote with Eric Greitens so AG Eric Schmitt.
Republicans in the state legislature moved last week to shift our primary system so a candidate would need to get over 50% to avoid a runoff.
Considering Mizzou joined the SEC a few years back this move to party primary runoffs would be another sign that Missouri is becoming more of a Southern state.

Should say “split the far right nutso vote between Greitens and McCloskey so AG Eric Schmitt can win”

“Friend,
During last year’s summer of violence and unrest, some in America took the opportunity to loot, pilfer, destroy property and tear apart people’s lives — simply because they felt they were owed a debt for the injustices of generations past.
When the mob begins to march — whether it’s in the suburbs of St. Louis, Portland, OR, or Houston, TX – everyone is fair game, no one is safe from their rath.
My name is Mark McCloskey and I’m proud I can say that when the mob came for me and my wife, we stood our ground. And the scariest part of all? What you saw happen to us could just as easily happen to any of you reading this email today.
That’s why I have decided to answer a calling to stand up and defend the people of Missouri – and every freedom-loving American – by running for the U.S. Senate.
Because of the actions my wife and I took to defend our lives and property, we were vilified by the left, and in October last year we were charged with unlawful use of a weapon.
Today in America, it seems like Democrats in government are more interested in protecting criminals from honest citizens, rather than the other way around.
I am not subject to intimidation and nothing will scare me from protecting our rights and freedoms.
I’m a fighter. I won’t back down. When the Fascist BLM mob marched toward my home on July 14th, 2020, it woke me up. It reminded me that our country, our freedoms that we take for granted are indeed worth FIGHTING for.
The far-Left is hellbent on destroying America. They want us to hate each other. They want to divide us.
I cannot in good conscience sit around while Marxists roam free without consequence, trying to destroy our suburban way of life.
Will you consider a contribution of $5, $10, $25, $100 or more today to help me ensure every conservative in America sees my Senate announcement video?
Let me be clear: neither my wife nor I discharged our weapon. Not a single individual was harmed. We became the go-to villains for the cancel culture left, simply for defending our home.
When the BLM mob came to destroy my home – I stood my ground.
When I was charged by the St. Louis County Attorney for exercising my constitutional right to bear arms – I fought back.
I have always been a Republican. But I have never wanted to run for office. When the fascist mob came to my door. It woke me up. I saw what the future of America will be if we don’t stand up and defend our rights, now.
Now, I’m asking for the honor of standing up and fighting for every American against the far-Left’s all-out-assault on our democratic freedoms.
Here is my ask of you today: Will you help me send a message to the BLM, the Fascist Left and Democrats in DC that we the people will not be silenced? If your answer is yes, will you chip-in whatever you can afford today to help me start my campaign for the Senate on the strongest note possible?
Friend, you can count on me to protect and defend our Constitutional liberties. “

Probably. I am not sure why she turned him down.
My sister Virginia is a very nice person whom I love deeply. She tends to be liberal on most issues other than abortion. I know the idea of marrying a Republican is totally repulsive to me, but I would doubt she feels quite as strong about that as I do. She has never gotten married. All of my other sisters and brother have married fellow Democrats.
jamesb says
Keeping it in the party, eh?
Zreebs says
Personally, I would find it difficult to even maintain a friendship with Republicans. To do so, usually means that I just refuse to discuss certain things with them, and by definition, I therefore cannot feel close to that person. Certainly, there are Republicans I can talk with or even socialize with, but there are no Republicans whom I would genuinely consider my friend. Having a friendship means respecting their values. None of my friends share all of my values and that is not a problem, but there are some values some people might have that I am unable to respect. I can respect if a person is morally opposed to abortion such that she/he believes it should be banned, but I cannot respect someone whom is morally indifferent for example to global warming. I know my brother largely feels the same way. I know that each my my sisters have all struggled in varying degrees in trying to maintain a friendship with at least some Republicans.

There may be hope though. In an unguarded moment last week he said he was hopeful Trumps influence would end in a year or two,in effect conceding that it hasn’t ended at all,his “proof” notwithstanding.

Biden Would Crush Trump In a Rematch
A new Yahoo! News/YouGov poll finds Biden leading Trump 48% to 36% in a hypothetical 2024 race, with 16% saying they’re unsure.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
If the current balance is 48% Biden to 36% Trump, then no doubt some serious disenfranchisement, voter suppression and “election integrity reform” is now in order.
For example, let’s limit voting to in-person balloting to a single site per county from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Election Day only, and impose very stiff fines upon employers and employees alike for any unexcused absences from work on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. (However public transportation on Election Day must be on a Sunday & holiday schedule only.)
No voting without a valid U.S. passport, the QR code from a mobile phone and police certification (from the voter’s county of birth) of no prior criminal convictions or outstanding debts.

National Association of Black Journalists: ‘Cannot Support’ Chicago Mayor’s Exclusion of White Reporters
By JUDSON BERGER
National Review
May 20, 2021 5:54 PM
To be clear, the headline above cuts to the chase. The National Association of Black Journalists’ statement couches its critique in otherwise complimentary language toward Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s recent actions and statements. But the message is clear: the mayor has the right diagnosis, and the wrong prescription.
At issue is the mayor’s rather stunning decision to only grant interview requests from journalists of color, on the occasion of the two-year anniversary of her inauguration. This frustrated some members of the Chicago press corps. Far from reconsidering, the mayor and her team dug in, on Twitter and in a detailed letter to reporters.
The NABJ board, in a lengthy statement, called it a “bold move,” which it indisputably is. Here’s what else the NABJ said (emphasis added, in bold):
It appears to serve to underscore her desire to draw attention to the racial disparities in local newsrooms and political coverage. The mayor notes that she is disturbed about the overwhelming white Chicago press corps covering city hall. While her social media posts and subsequent letter have been eyebrow-raising to some, it shines a needed spotlight on the call for a greater commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion across the media industry.
Although we cannot support the tactic, we applaud the mayor’s sensitivity to the lack of diversity among the people who cover city government. Historically, America’s elite political units have been led by predominantly white reporters and managers. Too often Black journalists are not given the opportunity to join political teams.
While the mayor has every right to decide how her press efforts will be handled on her anniversary, we must state again, for the record, that NABJ’s history of advocacy does not support excluding any bona fide journalists from one-on-one interviews with newsmakers, even if it is for one day and in support of activism. We have members from all races and backgrounds and diversity, equity and inclusion must be universal. However, the mayor is right in pointing to the fact that Black and Brown journalists have been quietly excluded from a number of access points over the years. We know first hand it is painful and unhealthy for our communities.
The caveat-packed statement looks like the true product of a committee, but one can discern the gist, that she’s raising a valid point in completely the wrong way. (How very Trumpian.)
The debate in Chicago is heated. As Isaac Schorr noted yesterday, one city reporter who is Latino pulled out of an interview over this policy. A local NABJ leader was less critical. In her letter, Lightfoot sought to contrast the diversity of the city government against that of the press corps, which she lamented was “practically all white.”
“Many of them are smart and hard-working, savvy and skilled. But mostly white, nonetheless. Indeed, there are only a handful of beat reporters of color in the City Hall press corps. While there are women of color who sometimes cover my administration, there are zero women of color assigned to the City Hall beat. Zero. I find this unacceptable and I hope you do too.”…

“Patriot,
If you think we’re going to flip Kamala’s Senate majority next year without first ensuring our elections are FREE and FAIR… then you’ve got another thing coming.
The Left wants you to believe there was nothing to see in 2020. Lies!
As I explained on Steve Bannon’s War Room, it’s simple math and evidence — and we cannot afford to enter next year’s midterms without a FULL FORENSIC AUDIT of the 2020 election in key battleground states.
That’s why I’ve secured a MATCH on all contributions to help keep up the fight to secure our elections as we work tirelessly to win this open Senate seat.
Please make a contribution to help ensure our elections are free and fair — and help a pro-Trump Navy SEAL win the OPEN seat that will decide the fate of the 50/50 Senate.
Liberals and the establishment RINOS who attack me want you to believe that securing our elections is for conspiracy theorists.
But you tell me if basic statistics sound like a conspiracy theory…
For the last 40 YEARS, the 19 bellwether counties across America have all voted for the winning presidential candidate — except in 2020.
Last year, Joe Biden won ONLY 1 of those counties.
President Trump won 18 of 19 bellwether counties that have predicted the last 40 years of presidential elections, and yet the Left wants to call YOU crazy for even questioning their narrative.
As a Navy SEAL who risked my life for this country, I cannot overstate just how much is on the line. The very fabric of our Republic is at stake if we don’t secure our elections ahead of the 2022 midterms.
So please, make a contribution to help ensure our elections are free and fair as we fight to win the OPEN seat that will decide the fate of the 50/50 Senate.”

As best I cam “ interpret” James’s view of the Republican Party presently, and I emphasize that due to his many contradictory statements this is given with low confidence, he believes that Trump is actually fading away .He no longer believes that it is happening rapidly as he once did, but that within a year or two Trump will effectively be history and his influence on the party will shrink as his receding continues.
With Trump gone, the Republican Party will enjoy a Renaissance of sorts.Republicans will suddenly see the error of their Trump induced miasma and will return to being somewhat like they were in the GW Bush era.Conservative ?Yes ,but all this nuttiness with its attendant lies will return to the fringe from whence it came and,if not exactly cooperative with Democrats in Congress, at least a modicum of civility will return and rigid “No No NO” will be a thing of the past.
I don’t subscribe to much of this myself.Trumps personal dominance may fade with time(although he could just as easily be elected President in 2024) .More than likely though ,Trumpism with its attendant craziness, lies, and attempts to steal elections will continue to hold sway in the Republican Party.Even if Trump doesn’t run himself the Republican nominee will be someone he supports and ,except for a less vociferous twitter account ,and perhaps slightly less personal venom ,will politically be a clone of him.
Indeed ,even without Trump himself ,I see the Republican Party in six to eight years not being much different than it is today.
