Ya can’t make this stuff up….
The NY Republican House Rep Stefanik prominently mentioned as the choice by House Republicans to replace Liz Cheney is coming under attack also as NOT Rightwingnut enough….
But it appears that ousting Cheney is NOT about policy….
It seems to be just about public support for Donald Trump’s alternate reality….
Some conservative groups are arguing that Rep. Elise Stefanik (N.Y.) is too liberal on policy to replace embattled Rep. Liz Cheney (Wyo.) as the third-ranking House Republican.
The 36-year-old Stefanik has emerged as the leading contender to fill Cheney’s spot as GOP conference chair.
But FreedomWorks this week lamented Stefanik’s “dismal” 37 percent score on the group’s vote scorecard, arguing it would be a mistake to put her in charge of messaging in place of the staunchly conservative Cheney.
The Club for Growth has also gone on the attack.
“Elise Stefanik is NOT a good spokesperson for the House Republican Conference,” the group said in a in a Wednesday tweet.
“She is a liberal with a 35% CFGF lifetime rating, 4th worst in the House GOP,” the group added, referring to her score on the group’s own voting scorecard.
“House Republicans should find a conservative to lead messaging and win back the House Majority.”
Such complaints are unlikely to matter in a vote next week that has little to do with policy or conservative orthodoxy. The vote instead is shaping up as more of a loyalty test to former President Trump, the most powerful force in GOP politics despite his loss of the White House, and GOP losses of House and Senate majorities under his leadership….

Another piece on pushback against the NY GOPer Stefanik , who some feel is NOT rightwing enough….
Stefanik, a rising Republican star who is working to replace Rep. Liz Cheney as the House GOP conference chair, has spent much of the last two years as a fierce defender of the former President, particularly during his first impeachment inquiry. After the 2020 election, she has recently encouraged and promoted lies about the 2020 election and objected to the Electoral College vote in Pennsylvania.
But in 2015, 2016 and the early days of his first term in office, Stefanik criticized Trump over everything from his incendiary comments about Muslims and women to his signature policy positions, such as reforming NATO, building a US-Mexico border wall and having stronger cooperation with Russia….
…
In interviews during the 2016 Republican presidential primary, Stefanik said Trump would not become the GOP nominee for president. In one August 2015 interview, she said his campaign had peaked.
Stefanik, in her freshman term as a congresswoman, also said she believed Trump should release his tax returns to the public, which Trump famously never did. Stefanik did not endorse any candidate during the primary, and though she pledged she would support the Republican nominee, she initially did not invoke Trump’s name.
In another interview, in which she didn’t mention Trump by name, Stefanik blasted candidates who disqualified themselves by making “untruthful statements.”…

Stefanik Will Only Stay In Leadership Post Thru 2022
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who’s poised to replace Rep. Liz Cheney as the No. 3 House Republican, has signaled to some of her colleagues that she plans to stay in leadership and as chair of the House GOP Conference for just this Congress, CNN reports.
She plans to pursue the top GOP job on the House Education and Labor Committee next Congress.

Former GOP House Conference Chairs have not necessarily been gateways to future job promotions. Prior to Cheney, the role was held by Cathy McMorris Rodgers and before that it was Jeb Hensarling.
Some former GOP House Conference Chairs who did advance afterwards include Gerald Ford, Mike Pence, Jack Kemp, Dick Armey and John Boehnner.

Add Dick Cheney (like father, like daughter), Mel Laird and John Anderson (as well as Uncle Joe Cannon) to the list, which can be found at

I had forgotten that Dick Cheney served in the House and not the Senate!
Ouch! That is embarrassing on my part.

Could be her intention.
I have read of several Congresspeople who were more interested in chairing a major committee rather than serving in the “leadership.”Much of that type work is more involved in the actual technicalities of running the House as well as attending to members personal needs.
Who knows?Stefanik ,no favorite of conservatives, might view this as simply a resume builder figuring her chances of ascending to the top spot in the hierarchy might not be that promising.
