Simmering tensions between Republicans over the ongoing audit of election results in Arizona’s largest county are bursting into the open.
With the audit nearing its one-month mark and the GOP-controlled state Senate driving the process in an increasingly partisan direction, some Republicans have begun more aggressively pushing back against the effort, arguing that it has only served to further undermine confidence in the county’s elections rather than restore it.
The debate over the audit reached a breaking point Monday when the GOP-dominated Maricopa County Board of Supervisors sent a letter to Arizona’s Republican state Senate President Karen Fann demanding an end to the audit, saying that the process had made Arizona a “laughingstock.”
“None of this is inspiring confidence. None of this will cause our citizens to trust elections. In fact, it is having the opposite result,” the board, which is made up of four Republicans and one Democrat, wrote.
In the letter, the Board of Supervisors said that the audit had “become a partisan issue” and defended the integrity of the 2020 presidential election, which former President Trumphas falsely claimed was stolen from him….

Continuing Down the rabbit hole….
The Republican president of the Arizona Senate said Tuesday that an audit of the 2020 vote in Maricopa County being conducted by private contractors will go forward, despite furious pushback from local GOP officials, who this week called the process a “sham” that is harming democracy.
At a meeting to discuss the recount of nearly 2.1 million ballots, Senate President Karen Fann said the process is necessary to answer constituent questions and bemoaned the county’s unwillingness to work with the contractors hired by the state Senate….

Arizona auditors backtrack, say no election data destroyed
JONATHAN J. COOPER
May 18, 2021, 7:10 PM
PHOENIX (AP) — Firms hired to run a partisan audit of the 2020 election for Senate Republicans in Arizona said Tuesday that data was not destroyed, reversing earlier allegations that election officials in the state’s most populated county eliminated evidence.
The claim of deleted databases was amplified by former President Donald Trump and his supporters, who believe conspiracy theories about election irregularities.
Ben Cotton, founder of a computer forensics firm working on the audit, told key senators that he had recovered all data. The revelation came a day after Maricopa County officials released a scathing letter saying the auditors couldn’t find the data because they didn’t know where to look.
“I have the information I need from the recovery efforts of the data,” said Cotton, founder of CyFIR LLC.
He spoke at a livestreamed hearing called by Republican Senate President Karen Fann to demand answers from county officials about the allegation of deleted data and improper documentation of ballot storage.
The GOP-controlled county Board of Supervisors refused to show up, instead holding a blistering meeting of their own Monday to refute the allegations. They called the audit a “sham” and said Fann’s auditors are incompetent.
After Trump complained without evidence that his loss in Arizona was marred by fraud, Fann used the Senate’s subpoena power to take control of 2.1 million ballots, counting machines and hard drives full of data from Maricopa County, which includes the Phoenix area. She hired Cyber Ninjas,…

Devastating strip-down of the recount in National Review by Eric Richer, the recently-elected Republican Recorder of Maricopa County (who defeated a Democrat in 2020, no doubt a Democrat too stupid or incompetent to rig his own re-election). The vigorous comments on both sides are also worth a glance, while the article itself is worth reading in its entirety:

Arizona GOP Raises Big Sums Off ‘Audit’
“The Arizona Republican Party, along with other Trump-leaning groups, has used the state Senate’s ongoing ballot review as a way to raise funds for their causes and candidates,” the Arizona Republic reports.
“Through April, the state Republican party took in $897,000 for its federal activities… (and) another $335,000 for state activities through March.”
“By comparison, at the same point in 2019, when the chair, Kelli Ward, was in her first months in office, the state GOP had collected $137,000 in federal funds, and $175,000 in state funds.”

It would be disingenuous, however, to assert that this recount hasn’t also been used fairly extensively by Democratic and progressive-leaning groups (just check your spam folder).
Presumably the GOP and allies have done better than their opponents.

Update on Arizona Maricopa County election officials vs their state Republican led Senate…
Elected leaders in Arizona’s largest county responded defiantly Monday to a new subpoena issued by the state Senate that sought local computer routers and internal logs to bolster a GOP-commissioned review of the 2020 presidential election results.
Senate President Karen Fann (R) has said the items are needed to conclude the controversial audit of the election in Maricopa County, which private contractors have been conducting on behalf of the Senate since April.
County officials rejected her claim in a scathing letter.
“It is now August of 2021. The election of November 2020 is over. If you haven’t figured out that the election in Maricopa County was free, fair, and accurate yet, I’m not sure you ever will,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Jack Sellers (R) wrote in a letter to the Senate on Monday…

Mark Brnovich, a Republican who served as Arizona’s attorney general until January, buried the findings of a 10,000-hour review by his office that found no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, newly released documents reveal.
The documents were released on Wednesday by Mr. Brnovich’s successor, Kris Mayes, a Democrat who took office last month as the top law enforcement official in the battleground state, which remains at the forefront of the election denial movement….
