There have been more media reports of anit- Asian-Americans being the subject of harassment and violence in America…
Vice President Harris on Wednesday expressed solidarity with the Asian American community after shootings near Atlanta left several Asian women dead amid a broader rise in bias against Asian Americans.
“Knowing the increasing level of hate crime against our Asian American brothers and sisters, we also want to speak out in solidarity with them and acknowledge that none of us should ever be silent in the face of any form of hate,” Harris said during a virtual meeting with the Irish prime minister to mark St. Patrick’s Day.
“We’re not yet clear about the motive,” Harris added. “But I do want to say to our Asian American community that we stand with you and understand how this has frightened and shocked and outraged all people.”
Harris, whose mother is originally from India, is the first Asian American elected vice president.
Her comments come as police investigate the Tuesday night shootings around Atlanta that left eight people dead, six of whom were Asian. The shootings took place at massage parlors, and all but one of the victims were women.
President Biden has been briefed on the shooting and indicated he would address it later Wednesday.
Authorities said Wednesday that the suspected gunman claimed he has a “sexual addiction.”…

Andrew Yang called for the NYPD Asian Hate Crime Task Force to be fully funded during a press conference Wednesday, in the wake of a mass shooting in Georgia and a steep uptick in anti-Asian hate crimes this year and last in New York.
“What started out as invisibility or a sense of foreignness has now become hatred, violence, assault [and] people feeling that we do not belong in our own country or in our own streets,” Yang, a leading mayoral candidate, told reporters during a hastily arranged press conference in Times Square….

An elderly Asian American woman attacked and punched by a man on a San Francisco street fought back, leaving him battered, bloodied and hospitalized.
The clash came hours after city police announced increased patrols in Asian neighborhoods following a recent surge of attacks in the city and across the nation, including a shooting rampage in Georgia that left six Asian women and two other people dead.
Xiao Zhen Xie, 75, was “very traumatized, very scared” after the encounter, she told CBS San Francisco with her daughter, Dong-Mei Li, helping to translate. Xiao’s face appeared swollen and she could not yet see in one eye, her daughter said.
Xiao said she was waiting at a traffic light when the suspect suddenly punched her in the eye. She picked up a stick and fought back, she said.

Asian Americans, many for the first time, are giving children and elderly parents ‘The Talk’ on how to protect themselves from hate
By Shirley Leung Boston Globe Columnist,

Black parents have long had “The Talk” with their children on how they should behave when pulled over by the police: Hands out of your pockets, do what they say, no sudden moves. Now many Asian Americans, for the first time, are having similar conversations with their children on how to gird themselves against a wave of anti-Asian sentiment, violence, and bullying.
For Mai Du and her 17-year-old son, Thomas Tran, talking about Asian hate may not be new, but playing out the what-if scenarios is.
Over dinner recently, Du asked her son what would he do if someone was being harassed on the T. Would he confront the perpetrator? Would he look the other way? After some reflection, the Dorchester mother and son, who are Chinese-Vietnamese, came up with what they believe is the best course of action: Pull out your phone and take video.
“That,” Du said, “is the first line of self-defense.”…

I don’t know about the rest of the group, but I have been very disturbed about these racist attacks.
I talked with an expat coworker from Japan about 2 years ago and I recall being surprised when he said that USA is a racist country towards Asians.
What is wrong with us (collectively) that we have such hate in our hearts. Can we agree that violence directed toward minorities is evil?

You’re not alone Zreebs. I feel like these attacks have opened my eyes to bigotry against Asians. Not that I thought it didn’t exist before but I’m a little embarrassed personally that I wasn’t aware of how pervasive it is. Especially as my niece in law is Chinese American.
Growing up I remember slurs against Japanese being explained away by those who grew up or fought in WWII. I didn’t buy that BS as my own father who served in the Korean War never made comments like that, and he wasn’t necessarily “politically correct”.
And while these attacks aren’t all committed by MAGA types can anyone seriously argue that “China virus” and right wing conspiracy theories about Biden being a “took” of the Chinese aren’t feeding this?
Zreebs says
Do we really know who is committing the attacks and why? I guess when the people who committed an attack aren’t caught, we really won’t know why it was done. And of course, even if they are caught, the attackers can blame sex addiction or some other excuse.
