The comments ARE insensitive to AsianAmericans and Blacks….
The Congressman stands by HIS stupidity …
This is NOT about free speech….
It’s about people and history of racism at its worst….
Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, said he has no apologies over comments he made during an anti-Asian discrimination hearing Thursday on Capitol Hill.
While speaking during the hearing, Roy made remarks that the families of the six Asian Americans killed in Atlanta on Tuesday deserve justice, but then he went on to use a metaphor rooted in lynching as an example of justice.
“There are old sayings in Texas about find all the rope in Texas and get a tall oak tree,” he said. “We take justice very seriously, and we ought to do that.”
He also went on to criticize how China handled releasing information about the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19, and referred to it as “the China virus.”
The comments drew sharp criticism from Democrats both in Washington and Texas, including Rep. Grace Meng, D-New York, who made a passionate and emotional rebuttal holding back tears.
“This hearing was to address the hurt and pain of our community and to find solutions,” she said. “And we will not let you take our voice away from us.”
Texas Democrats are calling for Roy’s resignation, saying, “No elected official in America should be able to glorify lynching — one of the darkest stains on our country — and remain in office.”
“Roy’s comments are painful and offensive to a country reeling from the horrifying anti-Asian attacks in Atlanta this week,” Texas Democrats Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said.
Roy issued a statement about the comments Thursday night, essentially doubling-down on them.
“Apparently some folks are freaking out that I used an old expression about finding all the rope in Texas and a tall oak tree about carrying out justice against bad guys. I meant it. We need more justice and less thought policing,” the statement said, in part.
He ends the statement with, “We should restore order by tamping out evil actors, not turn American into an authoritarian state like the Chinese Communists who seek to destroy us. No apologies.”….

What smelly polluted moral backwater produces and nurtures these creatures?
The Constitution that they have sworn to uphold, protect and defend does guarantee due process and the equal protection of the laws. Even the worst mass-murderer should be allowed his or her day in court.

Texas Red soil?…..
Zreebs says
Roy was born in Maryland and grew up in Virginia.
Zreebs says
Actually I was half expecting that he grew up in Long Island, which for whatever reason seems to have had more than its fair share of shady characters. Maybe it is my imagination?
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Now, Zreebs, you wouldn’t be calling Alfonse D’Amato shady, would you?
Zreebs says
Yes. D’Amato qualifies.

Thanks, Zreebs, I thought that the Voice had shut down completely in the way that the Boston and Providence Phonenixes had, but I suppose that was just the print-on-paper edition (once ubiquitous in The Big Apple, but widely available for sale all over the country, or at least in many college towns(.
Zreebs says
I am impressed that you recalled D’Amato came from Long Island. You are truly an encyclopedia in human form!
Even in the areas that I feel I possess a relatively high amount of knowledge, you often match or exceed what I know! Your broad knowledge base is truly impressive. Wish we could meet one of these years!

Island Park Long Island in Nassau County..
The guy with the annoying voice…
Zreebs says
James,
I haven’t heard D’Amato speak in maybe two decades. Didn’t he have a relatively high pitched voice?
This may surprise you, but the Brooklyn Long Island accent is not soothing to the rest of the country – especially in the South. Southerners despise “Northerners” accents, but they struggle to differentiate a Brooklyn accent from the rest of the north. I know this, because I came to the South from NJ, and I was told more frequently than you would expect that my accent was annoying. I was often told that it is not caw-fee, it is ka-fee! So I deliberately changed the way I pronounced some words. And when I returned to NJ 3 years ago, I was told it is not ka-fee, it is caw-fee.
At the same time, northerners struggle to differentiate a South Carolina accent from a West Texas or a Cajun accent. Northerners would just know that the person is from the South!
I am stereotyping of course, but there is still some truth in this!
jamesb says
Al was actually born in NYC ….Trump in Queens…..
Yes…
He has a annoying voice….and mannerisms….
He, he, he….
New YOOOORKER accents have been satirised for decades…..
Zreebs says
Dave, if I recall correctly, yes, the Village Voice was shut down, but at least some of the archives now appear online. The article I provided had a 1992 publishing date!
If I am not mistaken, the Village Voice is still publishing new material, but not on a weekly or monthly basis.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
I’m equally impressed, Zreebs, with your knowledge of all the members of Congress.
Maybe not in CG’s class but still quite formidable.
Scott P says
I always knew D’Amato was from Long Island (along with Billy Joel and Jerry Seinfeld)
If I recall the area used to be more uniformly Republican which gave D’Amato a base to get elected 3 times to the Senate. But by 1998 that wasn’t enough to keep him in his job.. And while I think Long Island may still have GOP pockets as a whole it has shifted blue like many suburban areas.
jamesb says
Long Island which actually INCLUDES the NYC born of Brooklyn has two separate counties….
Nassau (pop. 1.357M), where I live, and Suffolk (pop. 1.477M)….
Nassu where 83 year old D’Amato resides in has been a Republican strong hold for decades….
Things where run by a ‘machine’….
The GOP ran in trouble about 15 years ago when several Republican politicians where arrested and charged with corruption….
Democrats gained a foothold in 2000 to 2006 in both counties….
In the 2008-2016 Obama years Democrats won sporadicly….
Winning the DA offices, The Nassau County Executive and sending Suozzi who lost that job to a Republican to Congress…
Dem’s hold the majority in the Suffolk County leg and Republican hold majority in Nassau…

For all this discussion about Al D”Amato (whom I was a fan of as a teenager), he was quite the political rival of Rudy Giuliani and was known to tell people how lousy Rudy was character-wise, even when Rudy was popular in GOP circles during his early days as Mayor.
CG says
and check out his book, “Power, Pasta, and Politics” as I did many years ago.
Scott P says
I’m surprised D’Amato didn’t jump into the 1988 or 1996 GOP presidential primary race. But maybr the book gives reason for that. Not that I think he could have gotten far. Just surprised he didn’t try.
CG says
He was always a close Bob Dole ally. He helped engineer the entire NY GOP to endorse Dole in 1995, before Dole even announced.
And in that year, Rudy Giuliani voted for Bill Clinton.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Hi, CG, who’s plagiarizing whose title.
Another Republican office-holder )who went to Federal prison for his crimes), the late former Mayor of Providence, Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci, Jr., entitled his own (very readable if not always complete or accurate) memoirs, “Pasta and Politics”.
And Buddy had a reason because he produced and promoted the Mayor’s Own Marinara (MOM) Sauce.

D’Amato’s book came out in 1995. Cianci’s came out in 2012.

Senator ‘Pothole’ was a self pushed force in Congress and voted actually for some progressive civil rights legislation….But on the whole he was conservative GOPer for THOSE times….
In 2016 he was for Kasich ….
Again….
D’Amato was kinda screwy…..
Giuliani was a media ‘star’ as the Big Apple Mayor miles above the LI US Senator….

Michigan GOP leader calls Democratic women ‘witches,’ refers to ‘assassination’ of Republicans who voted to impeach
Dave Boucher
Detroit Free Press
Michigan Republican Party Chairman Ron Weiser used the term “assassination” in response to a question about ousting fellow GOP lawmakers after calling the three highest ranking female elected officials in the state “witches” during an event Thursday, according to video posted to Facebook.
Weiser made the comments during a meeting of the North Oakland Republican Club.
“Our job is now to soften up those three witches and make sure that we have good candidates to run against them, that they are ready for the burning at the stake,” Weiser said to laughter from the crowd.
The statements came months after the FBI and state authorities thwarted an alleged plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. At least some of those accused of playing a role in the plot are from Lake Orion and Clarkston, located in northern Oakland County.
“Given the dramatic increase in death threats against Michigan elected officials during the Trump administration, this type of rhetoric is destructive and downright dangerous. We saw this firsthand when Republican legislators met with the very militias that tried to kidnap and kill the governor, and when Republican party leaders helped organize the January 6th protest at the U.S. Capitol building,” said Whitmer press secretary Bobby Leddy.
“As the governor has said repeatedly, it’s time for people of good will on both sides of the aisle to bring down the heat and reject this kind of divisive rhetoric, because we need to stay focused on what really matters, and that’s working together to get things done for Michigan’s working families.”
U.S. Reps. Peter Meijer and Fred Upton, both West Michigan Republicans, also faced a barrage of death threats after they voted in support of impeaching former President Donald Trump.
Meijer declined to comment. Upton did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The story was first reported by the Detroit News.
After discussing party unity and the need for inclusivity, Weiser was asked several times about whether the party should still support Upton and Meijer.
He was referring to Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. All three Democrats are up for election in 2022….
