Not if Donald Trump can help it right now….
When former President Donald Trump was asked to list those he considers the future leaders of the Republican Party, he quickly rattled off names including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sens. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz. Conspicuously absent from the list: Mike Pence.
The former vice president is steadily reentering public life as he eyes a potential run for the White House in 2024. He’s joining conservative organizations, writing op-eds, delivering speeches and launching an advocacy group that will focus on promoting the Trump administration’s accomplishments.
But Trump’s neglect in mentioning Pence during a podcast interview earlier this month signals the former vice president’s unique challenge. For someone who built a reputation as one of Trump’s most steadfast supporters, Pence is now viewed with suspicion among many Republicans for observing his constitutional duty in January to facilitate a peaceful transfer of power to the Biden administration, a decision that still has Trump fuming….

I don’t see Pence ever becoming a presidential nominee. Trump people don’t like him, and Pence supported Trump’s corruption while in office.
Scott P says
To a not insignificant percentage of Republicans Mike Pence committed a hanging offense on January 6.
Not saying they all think he should have been hanged. Still quite a few see him as somehow complicit in Trump’s exit from the White House because of his ceremonial duties that day.
Crazy? Sure but we’re talking Republicans in 2021 here.
My Name Is Jack says
Yes isn’t it ironic that so many Republicans who are always mouthing off about the “Constitution “either actively opposed or at least verbally supported the subversion of that very document.
As to aPence candidacy?I don’t see much basis for it.As you point out many Trumpers blame him for not participating in their coup.Trump, assuming he doesn’t run, seems unlikely to bless a Pence candidacy .So where does that leave him?
Maybe some casual Trump supporters, essentially old line Republicans who liked Trumps policies, but abhorred him personally ,might go for Pence ,but then there are likely to be a number of candidates for them to pick from and Pence might look to have the worst of both worlds, having angered the Trump cult ,yet with the Trump onus still around his neck and appear unelectable.
He’s in a quandary no doubt but I Imagine he will run.Why not?
Zreebs says
I do think Pence could have a job in a future Republican administration- even one run by a Trump loyalist. I think that Pence might be willing to accept a higher level cabinet job for a Republican.
Pence was fiercely loyal to Trump throughout his vice presidency – except for Jan 6 when he did what he was required to do.
In terms of Jack’s question, why wouldn’t Pence run, “because he would lose” is a good reason not to run.
My Name Is Jack says
Most politicians overlook that in making their decision in running for President .
Consider all those that have sought the presidential nomination over the years .
Most of them knew there was a good chance they would lose, yet they took the leap .Such an attitude is almost a necessity to make the effort in the first place.
Zreebs says
Many politicians who run for President know they will likely lose, but see their run as a stepping stone for another, perhaps different job down the road. Arguably, that was true even with Trump.
Many politicians however, genuinely believe they will win. I bet that most Senators in their heart believe they are qualified to be president, and believe they have what it takes to win.
Scott P says
I predict a Pence run would be about as successful as the last presidential bid by a one term GOP Vice President from Indiana.

Per Dan Quayle:
“I have made good judgements in the past. I have made good judgments in the future.”
And there were a lot of other gems he said, which were as good or better than what i just quoted.
My Name Is Jack says
Sure they do.
Also I’m quite sure that almost all of them say to themselves “I could lose.”
That doesn’t deter them from running though. So it is for Pence.

Most people running for President do so after dreaming of how it would be ?
One would assume they do nothing thing of negatives….
It’s been described as getting the ‘fever’

Mike Pence, should he so choose, should definitely have a place or niche in the 2024 Republican sweepstakes, because he’s the most authentic voice among likely candidates of a real constituency: non-crazy, non-fanatical evangelical conservatives (with their trad Catholic and orthodox Jewish allies).
When Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio talks that talk, they’re far from totally believable, either to us or to conservative Christians trying to live their faith according to their own lights — organizing against abortion and gay rights at the same time they feed the hungry, house the homeless, keep traditional families, attend church every Sunday and Wednesday, read the Bible every day, pray constantly, etc.
But for all his self-righteous piety, Mike Pence must appear like the real thing. When he swore on a Bible to uphold the Constitution, I think he meant it. Someone like Mike Huckabee might try to come in from the wings or the bleachers, but Mike Pence has already shown himself in office.
On the other hand, I think Pence is unlikely to win the GOP nomination, because religion is only one leg of the three-legged Republican stool: the others being hawkishness and economic conservatism (deregulation, low taxes, less spending). Plus a fourth, and longer, leg: Trumpism (enthusiasm for both the criminal and his message of militant intolerance).
Other Vice Presidents since 1900 who were defeated for re-election:
James Sherman (died before the 1912 election),
Charles Curtis (1932),
Robert Dole (1976, nominated for President in 1996 but lost)
Walter Mondale (1980, nominated for President in 1984 but lost)
Dan Quayle (1992)

N.B..,technically speaking, Dole wasn’t an incumbent VP in 1976. Nelson Rockefeller was,.

Bob Dole never served as VP! He was Ford’s VP nominee, but Ford lost!

Pence Signs Seven Figure Book Deal
“Mike Pence has signed a multimillion-dollar, two-book deal with publisher Simon & Schuster, making him one of the first alums of former President Donald Trump’s inner circle to ink such a lucrative contract,” CNN reports.
“Two people in the publishing industry tell CNN the former vice president’s deal is worth seven figures, somewhere in the range of $3 million to $4 million.”
Democratic Socialist Dave says
That, Zreebs, is what I just wrote (a week ago).
Zreebs says
Dave, Your use of the term “incumbent” VP confused me.
Your comment implies I can include Ralph Nader in a list of Presidents as long as I subsequently make some confusing footnote that “technically speaking, Nader was not an incumbent president in 2000.”
Come on. You are better than that!
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Bob Dole, if you want to look at him that way, falls into a tiny class with FDR: failed major-party candidates for Vice President who later won a major-party nomination for President. FDR is the only one so far to win the Presidency.
[If you want to go far enough back, Rufus King, Charles Pinckney’s running-mat on the losing Federalist tickets of 1804 and 1808, ran for President as a Federalist in 1816 and lost.]

Former Vice President Mike Pence underwent a successful surgery Wednesday to have a pacemaker implanted to help combat a slow heart rate he’s recently experienced, his office said in a statement.
“Over the past two weeks, former Vice President Pence experienced symptoms associated with a slow heart rate and, upon consultation with his doctors, underwent a procedure yesterday at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church, Virginia, to implant a pacemaker,” Pence’s office said in a statement on Thursday….

I’m sure it will fly off the shelves (justifying that multi-million dollar advance), just like the never-out-of-print memoirs of Don Rumsfeld, H.R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman.
