Bye…Bye Biden effort for Political ‘Unity’?…Open Thread for 3/22/2021…

The Midterm election of 2018 ended that…

Now we have Democrats with a slim majority in Congress and a Democratic President….

The word was the Biden with his time in the Senate would be able to work ‘with’ Republicans to get major legislation passed…

THAT does not seem to be the case…

While Republicans have voted with Democrats to confirm almost all of Biden’s cabinet picks?….Then have All voted against the Stimulus /Rescue package that will sent money back home to all of the congressional legislators…

The Bill is very popular with ALL Americans’, that means even Republicans….

Biden is in the 50’s in approval in the polls also….

Biden and Democrats are getting ready to go to the mat again with a BIG Infrastructure Bill….

They are signalling that they will press on with or without the ‘unity’ that Joe Biden wanted….

Are Congressional Republican’s betting against their supporters back home?…

Democrats are warning they won’t tolerate GOP stonewalling as they try to make good on their pledge to enact a “bold” agenda and avoid Obama-era missteps.

Fresh off a big win on coronavirus relief, Democrats are facing intense pressure not to water down their legislative priorities after years of a backed-up wish list during the Trump era and a decade since the party has had a unified government it could use to muscle through sweeping reforms considered anathema to the GOP.

“We will try to get them to work with us. But if not, we will put our heads together and figure out how to go,” Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer(D-N.Y.) told reporters. 

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) was more blunt, calling GOP leadership “divorced from reality” for opposing policies that are popular — even among Republicans — outside the Beltway. 

“Our standard for bipartisanship can no longer be what happens here in the Capitol, because we know that the strategy of my colleagues, legislatively, is not to try and find common ground — it’s obstruction and mischaracterization,” he said. “They ran this playbook during the Obama administration. … They are running the same playbook again.

“We will not let them get away with it,” he added.

The plow-ahead strategy is significant with a host of big agenda items looming in the coming months, including sweeping proposals addressing infrastructure needs, climate change and fixes to the Affordable Care Act….

    Remember Fox News has conceded in Federal Court that no “reasonable person” could take Carlson seriously.

    • One of my favorite evenings in DC was attending a taping of Cross Fire the night Jon Stewart called Tucker a dick to his face on air. Tucker sputtered in response and all the bow tied young Republicans in the audience tittered. It was a show stopper.

        Yeah, it’s easy to resent the person you soundly beat.

        My other thought is how Mark Halperin went from his big money gigs on NBC and Showtime to this little thing on Newsmax that virtually nobody will ever see. Somehow Andrew Cuomo is hanging on.

        • Mark Halperin is talented, but it is hard to recover from multiple serious allegations.

          I assume she means that Biden resents Trump’s popularity? I don’t get it, but what does she think Biden resents?

          It is more challenging than you might think to explain something in one or two words. I didn’t like those questions.

          • Just wondering, what this show something you signed up to do or were you found somehow?

            “Give me a word or a phrase” is very big in focus groups as well as show of hands. I would have been out on an island disagreeing with almost all four on almost everything of course.

            • I wrote a letter volunteering to participate and I explained why I thought I would make a good participant. If you would like to be a participant on the show and would like the contact information, I would be happy to share it with you. I bet you would do well.

                • I would not do well on jeopardy. My brother participatedin a try-out years ago and almost got an invitation!

                • Yes, CG, but can you pass The Text (which I understand that anyone can now take on line) ?

                  I read that a decade or two ago, the test was heavy on ancient classics, which apparently was a good indicator of overall performance on Jeopardy!, but now I fear that I’d fail all those pop-culture answers I couldn’t identify. One of the rare shows I saw in the last couple of years had a Li’l category with none of the names previously known to my baby-boomer mind.

                  • I have taken the test online before and presume I did well, but thousands of people do, and people are selected at random to continue in the audition process.

                    • The Justice Department has determined that a county in New York violated voter rights in a House race last year for the state’s 22nd Congressional District.

                      Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Pamela Karlan sent a two-page letter to Oneida County, N.Y., on Tuesday notifying it that the Oneida County Board of Elections violated two federal election laws, according to a copy of the letter reported by Syracuse.com.

                      The letter said that the county failed to process at least 2,400 voter registration applications that were submitted through the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles, the news outlet reported. It also said that some of those voters who properly registered weren’t given a chance to vote….

  17. Iowa Democrat Rita Hart announced Wednesday that she is withdrawing her challenge to the House over the results of the 2020 race in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District.

    The decision may come as a relief to Democratic leaders in the House, who might have faced a difficult decision to allow a vote on Hart’s challenge in a race that she lost to Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) by six votes….

    Although I am proud to say that I learned about transgendered people through my church (and to a less extent through my employer who provided educational sessions to all employees, there are still many churches that are hostile to transgendered people, and it is still not safe to be transgendered in many occupations.   20. I’m not much for boycotts.

    Major League Baseball Has decided to move their All Star game out of Atlanta over the recent Voting suppression bill passed by the Trump dominated Republican legislature in Georgia.The bill also has drawn criticism from the CEOs of Coca Cola and Delta Air Lines,two of the biggest companies headquartered there.

    All of this has aroused the ire of Donald Trump who stirred this whole thing up by lying and claiming there was widespread voting fraud in the November election .Like obedient automatons the Republican legislators in Georgia and elsewhere have begun enacting “reforms” to remedy a problem that doesn’t even exist and is a based on Trumps lies.Trump now wants to boycott the MLB.

    The boycott though probably hurts a lot of people who have nothing to do with the actions of the Trumpites.So, I oppose that.

    I also oppose the idea that these Trumpites care anything about “improving” voting.They are proven liars and cheats whose only purpose is to try any and everything to steal elections.

    Trump now says that the Georgia Election bill didn’t go far enough in suppressing the (minority) vote.After initially praising the measure,Trump has now ripped Gov.Brian Krmpe a new one.

    Kemp’s never going to satisfy Trump because despite his general sycophancy,he wouldn’t sadist him in stealing the election.

    • This isn’t just Trump. Given how many Republicans in 2021 voted to subvert the election results, why would anyone think that reducing the role of local election officials and sharply reducing the number of drop boxes in Fulton County will satisfy these people. If the Democrats effectively organize, they still might win even under these conditions.

      And Jack’s senior senator Lindsey Graham will continue to work behind the scenes making phone calls (and probably doing other things we don’t even know about) to ensure he and his best friends keep their power.

  25. The Arkansas State Legislature on Tuesday voted to override Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s (R) veto on legislation that bans gender reassignment surgeries and other treatments for transgender youth.
    The majority-Republican state House voted 72 to 25 to approve the controversial bill before sending the legislation back to the state Senate, which rejected the governor’s veto of the bill in a 25-8 vote, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
