Wait?
Did I just type that a Republican Senator wants The US Government to ‘pay’ Americans who have kids money?
Under Romney’s proposal, the existing child tax credit would be replaced with monthly payments of $350 for children ages 5 and under and $250 for children ages 6 to 17. Families would be capped at monthly payments of $1,250.
All children with Social Security numbers would be eligible for the payments, and parents would also be eligible to apply to start getting the benefit four months before a child’s due date.
The payment amounts phase out for single tax filers with income above $200,000 and married couples with income above $400,000 — the same income phaseout thresholds for the current child tax credit. The Social Security Administration would administer the monthly payments, and people would reconcile any overpayments or underpayments with the IRS when they filed their tax returns.
Romney would offset the cost of his proposal by eliminating some federal programs that he argues would be duplicative with his child allowance, including the head-of-household filing status, the child and dependent care tax credit and temporary assistance for needy families.
He also proposes reducing the cost of the earned income tax credit. Additionally, he proposes repealing the state and local tax deduction, which was already limited by President Trump‘s 2017 tax cut law, arguing that most families that previously claimed the deduction will still be better off under his proposal.
The Niskanan Center, a group that advocates for a child allowance, estimated that Romney’s plan would reduce U.S. child poverty by about one-third….

A worthy idea here and the Democrats should work with Romney on such a proposal.
Maybe a few Republicans will come on board?

Greene just stood up in the House now and say she made mistakes in her past comments….
She HAS gone public….
Democratic vote in the House is this afternoon…
Stay tuned….

I could see Murkowski Sasse and Collins joining Romney and the Democrats on this. Maybe Portman too.

As a former H&R Block tax-preparer (at the most basic level), the problems I might see are
(1) Social Security numbers: necessary now (including kids) for tax credits and filing but a barrier to legitimate undocumented workers (most of them at the very bottom of the social and economic scale, but doing very necessary work). There is a temporary/provisional equivalent number available, but I don’t know how it might apply.
(2) Head of Household filing status (single filers with at least one child or adult dependent); might or might not work well depending…
(3) State & Local Tax Deduction: a huge hit to states and cities with bigger budgets, as well as their taxpayers (think New York). However, it can only be claimed if you skip the Standard Deduction and instead itemize on Schedule A. In most lines of work, the Standard Deduction is worth more than Schedule A.

Saying she “made mistakes in the past” is nowhere near good enough. So has everyone else.

Sounds like Kevin McCarthy told her that a little contrition will probably cause most Republicans to stick with her on any House vote to kick her off her committees.
So that’s what she gave them.

Can you imagine what Republicans would do if a Congressman who happened to be a Muslim Democrat had made half the insane comments Greene did?
Does anyone think for a second they would be happy with said Islamic Democrat saying they “made mistakes in the past”?
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Well, they already have such a Muslim Democratic target, who’s made some questionable comments (and I don’t just mean “.. impeach the m-f-r!”) — Cong. Ilhan Omar (DFL-Minn.)
She’s already apologized for remarks such as claiming some pro-Israel votes were “just about the Benjamins”.
But I doubt that today’s congressional GOP would let a mere apology interfere with a good lynching.

Good point DSD….
But her comments where NOT violent….
Maybe the wrong side of things….
And she KNOWS when to go silent….
Greene does NOT….
