Non-New Yorkers are surprised with the revelations coming out against the Empire State Governor….
Political savvy New Yorkers are NOT.…
Andrew Cuomo has ALWAYS been a thin skinned , take no prisoners politician …
It HAS severed him well…
He gets elected over and OVER ( Three…4 year terms ) because like Donald Trump….
He HAS a loyal base that will support him regardless of what the media reports (There HAVE been scandals…Cuomo has navigated them all)….. Against what he gets done…
And unlike Trump?
He does get things done….
Longtime New York politics hands like former Bloomberg spokesperson Stu Loeser still explain Cuomo’s sticky approval by arguing that his voters “KNOW he’s super-aggressive & tough,” and describe his temperament as “a feature not a bug.” I find it hard to square that interpretation with what we actually watched TV Cuomo do, as his popularity skyrocketed last year. He did not go on television regularly to berate other Democrats and threaten to destroy them.
Cuomo, I think, understands how many of his supporters only know TV Cuomo, and he works diligently to hide newspaper Cuomo from them. If the governor believed, as people claim, that New Yorkers wanted our political leaders to be aggressive and tyrannical, it would probably feature a bit more in his official, made-for-television political branding. He might have focused on it in one of his 2018 television ads, for example. (Instead, he chose to highlight his experience, and his endorsements from Democrats like Joe Biden.) Or he might have actually agreed to debate Teachout in 2014, or Nixon more than once in 2018. And he probably would’ve more directly insulted her when he did.
Donald Trump’s key insight in 2016 was that Republican voters enjoyed seeing him humiliate and attack fellow Republicans in televised debates. If it were the case that Cuomo’s attacks on other Democrats were legitimately part of his brand—part of what made him a popular figure among New York Democrats—he’d do it on camera, instead of weekend phone calls, wouldn’t he?
TV Cuomo is now wounded. It’s too early to say how badly, and he is a resilient figure…

Zreebs says
Let me guess. You are one of the “politically savvy New Yorkers” that you described?
jamesb says
I DID point out here over and OVER that Rudy was NO DAMN GOOD…..
Yup….
Zreebs says
Yes you did! And when Giuliani had the press conference at the Four Seasons, you weren’t impressed even a bit.
My Name Is Jack says
I’m no fan of Cuomo as I posted last week..
And couldn’t care less what happens to him politically.
However after Trump?
It’s a new world as far as personal conduct. No conduct is now disqualifying.
Throw the information out there and let the voters decide seems to now be the rule of the day.
Take Al Franken. In today’s climate? He would never have resigned and likely would have stood a good chance of re-election.
Scott P says
Yeah Cuomo can resign or stay.
As I said yesterday in a world where Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz stay in office after what they did I find it hard to give a shit about this.
If someone else does have at it.
All I know is anyone who was promoting Cuomo stepping in as the Democratic nominee last spring because of his handling of COVID looks pretty dumb now.
Zreebs says
The fact that Republicans are hypocritical On these things doesn’t mean that the Democrats can be too. I would expect that of Republicans, but we should be better than them.
I have a black friend that told me that he wouldn’t vote to convict a black person until white people start getting convicted for things that they get convicted for. I understand where he is coming from, but that is wrong.
And just because a businessman can play an ancillary in setting up a Ponzi scheme and not get convicted doesn’t mean a teenager can steal a box of skittles from the store.
Democrats should seek fairness and justice. Charges of sexual harassment should be investigated. Sexual harassment is not a joke. And Cuomo should be held accountable if an investigation finds that sexual harassment was tolerated.
At this point, I am not going to offer an opinion based on what some woman said. As a general rule, I believe that the women should be believed. So an investigation should be done, and if sexual harassment was tolerated, then action should be taken. And depending on what the investigation finds, it may be appropriate for Cuomo to resign.
Scott P says
I agree Zreebs but at the same time I’m only human.
I guess I was just burned by the Franken thing.
And while it’s true as CG points out that my own former governor Eric Greitens is a Republican who resigned in disgrace after a sex scandal even he is talking of a comeback. Possibly challenging Roy Blunt in a GOP primary next year.
If Cuomo resigns I won’t shed a single tear. But if he doesn’t and has to faxe rge voters next year that’s fine too. I’d never vote for him for any office now.
And honestly his political career is dead as Dillinger now. As it should be.
jamesb says
Z?
Cases should on their merit’s….
Black, White, Brown, Yellow, Male, Female’s commit crimes….
All the above ARE in jail…
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Yes, James, some of all of those groups are in jail.
But you must know the proportions relative to the general population.
The only question is why?
Is it the justice system, access to the justice system, economics, social class, status, culture, heredity, public policy, racism or (statistically near-to-utterly impossible) random chance?
jamesb says
Yes….
Jails contain MORE minorities and poor whites….
Having MONEY DOES change things….
Zreebs says
Yes. Money helps, but so does white skin.
My Name Is Jack says
If people only understood that our criminal justice system is in a state of perpetual collapse.
The miracle is that it works as well as it does!
Keith says
Who was that who recommended the Democrats should replace the guy who won almost all of the primaries with Cuomo?
Whoever it was needs to apologize immediately.
Scott P says
Was it CG? Lol
Keith says
Whoever it was should apologize immediately.
jamesb says
I agree with U Jack on Cuomo
CG says
What I had said on Cuomo was that many Democrats online, etc, were speculating, at the time of the convention, when Cuomo’s popularity was sky-high that he should replace Biden. I would not have wanted Cuomo to be President over Biden.
I guess there could be a hypothetical debate over if Cuomo would have done better than Biden in November. Many think he would have, but I have my doubts, because Cuomo is so unlikable.
The bottom line now is that Cuomo has a series of storms surrounding him and is unlikely to emerge unscathed, especially politically, but maybe legally as well.
jamesb says
Politics IS about weathering storms….
CG says
Politics is about seeing former allies and supporters cut and run when the storm clouds get too ominous.
Cuomo is in a very bad position right now. So is Gavin Newsome in California (for mostly other reasons.)
Scott P says
So you were saying “people are saying”
Very Trumpian
CG says
But very verifiable in what I said. I am sure you know I am correct on this.
Scott P says
What were you “correct” on?
That Cuomo should have been installed as the Democratic nominee or that “people were saying” he should?
CG says
“people were saying he should”
Scott P says
OK. I’m done talking about Cuomo.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
I think the Democrats learned in 2016 that the way to stop an unlikeable New Yorker is not with another unlikeable New Yorker.
jamesb says
My state seems to produce ‘unlikeable’ politician’s….
Scott P says
Meanwhile Biden’s COVID relief plan favored by the vast majority of Americans and 60% of Republicans is likely to get zero GOP votes in the House tomorrow. .
Zero. Votes.
But yeah let’s keep talking about Cuomo.
My Name Is Jack says
“Fiscal conservatism”
Scott P says
As a prank Biden should hint that the COVID relief bill has a tax cut for billionaires. Just to see if Republicans start suddenly falling for it.
Scott P says
And you have Sen John Thune, using his personal story of working for 6 bucks an hour as a kid to rail against raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour.
Of course this was 40 years ago and in order to afford what you could in 1980 with a 6 buck an hour job you’d need to make 24 bucks an hour.
My Name Is Jack says
Yeah I saw that.
Bad staff work.
Should have issued an immediate “ clarification.”
Maybe one will be forthcoming?
Keith says
Exactly Scott, the same Republicans who would have jumped through their assholes to give Trump a tax cut for corporations and the very rich, and jumped to attention as he drove up the deficit are now “concerned with the deficit.”
Of course some people would rather talk about Andrew Cuomo, who has been a mean bastard since the Clinton Administration. Oh, he’s unlikable, really? He’s been a good Governor and, will as Gavin will survive his recall, be re-elected because we have an Administration in DC that is rushing to fix the pandemic and the economy (without the help of the Republican Party) and all will be forgiven.
The only way Andrew loses is if he loses his primary and that will become less likely as the economy recovers.
So let’s talk about the stimulus package. Or, the Senate hearing yesterday on the January 6th insurrection and Josh “the head of the Timothy McVeigh fan club” Hawley’s ridiculous performance during the proceedings.
Scott P says
Exactly. Hawley saying that Gen Honore had no authority to investigate the Capitol Hill rioters he fist bumped was in itself more worthy of resignation than anything Cuomo did.
jamesb says
Good points Keith….
There are NO people of mention to runnahainst Cuomo….
The last one was an actress…
Newsom and the lawmakers out there just approved a stimulus check for some in their state, en?
Democratic Socialist Dave says
The odd thing about the stonewall GOP resistance to the Covid relief package is that it doesn’t need a lucrative upper-class tax break to win the support of hundreds of CEO’s, owners and investors, nor of a large part of Trump’s working-class base, nor indeed of Donald Trump himself.
My Name Is Jack says
True.
Trump himself was advocating a $2000 stimulus check.
Of course it was Trump who was pushing the vaccines .Yet, almost half of self identified Republicans are balking at taking them.
Evidently , while they in general pay homage to Dear Leader, their superstitions and illogical anti government conspiratorial fallacies are such that even their hero can’t overcome their ingrained fantasies.
My Name Is Jack says
Then again now that I’ve been vaccinated I might have become that state controlled zombie that these Republicans fear!
Hell, I didn’t even feel the microchip going in!
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Funny thing, Jack, I didn’t notice anything myself during and after my two shots.
But then perhaps the CBW/Cyberwar/Surveillance experts in Russian, Chinese, Iranian and/or Israeli intelligence planned it that way.
jamesb says
Trump would have solid his shoes to get re-elected….
Giving everybody 2 grand of taxpayer money was an easy one for Trump…
And making sire HIS name was on the check for sure….
