Good Luck Mr. President….
Ya gonna need it….
Others have tried and failed….
The U.S. government has not passed a major citizenship bill since 1986, when amnesty legislation signed by Republican President Ronald Reagan legalized nearly 3 million undocumented immigrants.
“If Republicans want to come forward and work on immigration, I think the president is open to working with anyone who wants to get something done and get a bill to his desk,” said a senior administration official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity Wednesday to discuss the early negotiations. “We’re open to a conversation with anyone about this, but we think this is a much more comprehensive way to deal with this issue than just simply a wall.”
Biden indicated at a CNN town hall Tuesday night that he is open to alternate routes to citizenship — such as stand-alone bills that would legalize smaller groups of immigrants such as farmworkers — but he called the bill “a reasonable path to citizenship.”
Republicans have signaled little support for Biden’s approach. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), a backer of the 2013 bill, called the latest measure a “blanket amnesty.” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), who voted with Democrats to convict Trump, touted his own measure this week that would increase the minimum wage “while ensuring businesses cannot hire illegal immigrants.”
“We must protect American workers,” Romney said in a tweet Tuesday.
Biden’s bill includes some enforcement provisions such as increased border technology to interdict drug traffickers and smugglers, higher penalties for employers who exploit undocumented laborers in the United States, and increased funding for immigration courts.
But E-Verify, which checks a person’s legal status to work in this country, “will not be mandatory” for U.S. employers, and Biden has said he would not expand the border wall.
Note…
President Biden has already issued several executive orders changing the Trump admin immigration policy and has stopped work on as expected on the ‘Trump’ border wall…

I have read a ton about Dole’s life and he definitely smoked in the 40s, and when recovering from his war injuries, etc, but it was never written about as something he did beyond that, such as his time in Congress, etc. It is unlikely he could have lit a cigarette by himself.

It should matter in everyone’s mind. Even after Mitch’s “lock him up” speech post impeachment he still signals that he’ll support Trump if he’s the nominee.

McConnell is a legislative tactician and a very good one.

South Dakota AG Was Reading When He Hit Man
February 26, 2021 at 1:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 51 Comments
According to his cell phone records and police interview, South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg (R) was reading Joe Biden conspiracy theories at John Solomon’s Just The News website while driving when he slammed into a man and killed him.
Meanwhile, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reports a state judge blocked Gov. Kristi Noem (R) from releasing additional documents and video in the investigation.
Is there a “what about” that can be used as a false equivalency on this one? Or will we have to go back to the late 60’s and talk about Ted Kennedy? Ravnsborg has been lying from the get go on this one and he is still in office.
Actually, when you think about it, this is all Joe Biden’s fault. Right?

For anyone interested St. Louis mayoral election held March 2 will be the first non-partisan one under a new “Approval voting” system passed by city voters last November.
In the March 2 initial election voters can pick as many of the four candidates on the ballot as they would like and the top 2 vote recipients will move forward to the April general election.
This replaces the previous system which included a party primary in March followed by a general election in April. As the city votes 80%+ Democratic the April general election was often overlooked as the real race was in the primary.
Although the race is non-partisan of the four candidates on the ballot 3 have previously been elected as Democrats (Board of Alderman President Lewis Reed, Alderman Cara Spencer and Treasurer Tishaura Jones) and one was the GOP nominee for mayor in 2017 (businessman Andrew Jones).
It will be interesting to see how it plays out. The city of St. Louis has not elected a Republican mayor since the late 1940s but now even suburban St. Louis County with a population of over 1 million is pretty heavily Democratic–not having elected a Republican County Executive since 1990.
Andrew Jones is a longshot but under the new non-partisan system he and others not involved with the Democratic Party will have a better chance of being elected mayor than ever before. And I think it’s a good thing.

JONATHAN KARL (ABC News): Let’s also be clear, the president, then-president Donald Trump did not denounce what happened on January 6th on January 6th.
But clear this up for me. Joe Biden won the election. He is the legitimate president of the United States. The election was not stolen, correct?
SCALISE: Look, Joe Biden’s the president. There were a few states that did not follow their state laws. That’s really the dispute that you’ve seen continue on.
And, look, if you’re Joe Biden, you probably want to keep talking about impeachment and anything other than the fact that he’s killed millions of American energy jobs, that he continues to — they just signed the Paris Accord. It’s going to kill manufacturing jobs in America.
But at the end of the day, when you look at where we are in this country, either we’re going to address the problems that happened with the election that people are still — millions of people are still concerned about — the Constitution says state legislatures set the rules for elections. That didn’t happen in a few states. And so, going forward — look, Joe Biden’s the president. But does he…
(CROSSTALK)
KARL: I mean…
SCALISE: … towards what people are angry about?
KARL: But — but, Congressman, I know Joe Biden’s the president. He lives at the White House. I asked you, is he the legitimate president of the United States, and do you concede that this election was not stolen?
Very simple question. Please just answer it.
SCALISE: Look, once — once the — once the electors are counted, yes, he’s the legitimate president. But if you’re going to ignore the fact that there were states that did not follow their own state legislatively set laws, that’s the issue at heart, that millions of people still are not happy with and don’t want to see happen again.
You know, look, we — you can rehash the election from 2020 all day long, but there are people concerned about what the next election is going to look like. Are we going to finally get back to the way the rule of law works?
And I think that’s the biggest frustration many people have, is those states that didn’t follow the law, are they going to keep doing that in the future, or are we going to finally get back to what the Constitution calls out for electing our leaders?
KARL: All right. Congressman Steve Scalise, thank you for joining us on this “This Week.” Appreciate it.

Durbin wanted the post of Chairman, which he is said to have coveted for a long time, but it was quickly established today from within the powers that be that he was not going to be among those considered.
CG says
Even though Madigan has now resigned as State House Speaker, State Rep, and Chairman of the Party, he is almost certain to remain as the 13th Ward Party Committeeman.
In that capacity, Madigan arranged yesterday for an unheard of 26 year old patronage worker to take over the State Rep seat.

CG’s right: I was thinking of James Lankford only because I’d forgotten James Inhofe (R-Okla), who’s at the same level as Ron Johnson if not indeed a bit lower, (as well as being less articulate).
James Lankford, given his position on the political spectrum, actually seems reasonably thoughtful and open to bipartisan accommodation.

Fun (?) fact: Every Democratic Vice President since 1940 has sought the Presidency, although a couple withdrew before the first ballot and one ran on another ticket:
John Garner, H. Wallace, Truman, Alben Barkley, LBJ, Humphrey, Mondale, Gore, Biden
(Before that, you only have Jefferson, Van Buren and John Breckinridge)
That’s true for only about half the Republican Vice Presidents since 1900:
T.R., Coolidge, Nixon, Ford, Geo. H.W. Bush, and arguably Quayle,
but not
Chas. Fairbanks, James Sherman (died Oct. 1912), Chas G Dawes, Chas Curtis, Agnew, Rockefeller, Cheney or (so far) Pence.
(and no GOP VP’s before 1900, only one Whig – Fillmore – and only one Federalist — John Adams).
My Name Is Jack says
I think Biden joins Richard Nixon as the only two VPs to leave office and then come back and win the presidency .
Democratic Socialist Dave says
I think you’re right, Jack, although Walter Mondale did try to return after leaving (in fact losing) the Vice Presidency.
Only four other VP’s have become President without succeeding mid-term, and they all did it right at the end of their vice-presidential terms: John Adams (1796), Jefferson (1800), Van Buren (1836) and GHW Bush (1988). They all tried for a second term as President, but all except Jefferson were unseated.
Nine other Vice Presidents first became President when their predecessors died or resigned mid-term:
John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester Arthur, T.R., Coolidge, LBJ and Ford.
Tyler, Andrew Johnson & Arthur could not win a major or minor party nomination, but the other six did.

‘Get used to me’: Defiant Postmaster General Louis DeJoy pushes back at lawmakers at tense hearing on mail delays
Matthew Brown
USA TODAY
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy acknowledged failures in the delivery of holiday mail in an appearance Wednesday on Capitol Hill but blamed the delays on the coronavirus pandemic and what he said were long-festering problems within the U.S. Postal Service.
DeJoy, a longtime Republican donor and ally of former President Donald Trump, stirred outrage shortly after he was named postmaster general in May 2020 by ordering the removal of mail-sorting machines in postal facilities, cutting overtime for mail carriers and making other controversial changes.
While Democrats questioned him at the hearing of the House Oversight Committee, DeJoy remained defiant, telling Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., that he would oversee the Postal Service for “a long time. Get used to me.”
Lawmakers have expressed alarm over slow deliveries of prescription medicines and other items for veterans, seniors and other Americans who rely on the mail service as a lifeline.
Tempers flared at the hearing, where DeJoy was asked about the downsizing of some postal operations and other cuts that may affect postal workers’ benefits and salaries.
DeJoy also was questioned about the service’s operations during the 2020 elections and ongoing deliveries amid the coronavirus pandemic….

It has NO Chance in the US Senate….
The House on Thursday passed the Equality Act, a sweeping civil rights bill that expands protections in education, housing, employment and more to LGBT people.
The bill would also prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in credit, jury service and public accommodations.
Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) reintroduced the legislation, which passed the House in 2019 but never moved in the Senate. The bill, which passed the House on Thursday by a vote of 224-206, faces an uphill battle in the upper chamber, where GOP support is needed to reach the 60-vote threshold….

David Cicilline used to be my Congressman until I moved across Providence into Jim Langevin’s 2nd District.

Against the Equality Act
By The Editors
February 25, 2021 2:33 PM
The Equality Act, which passed the House in 2019 then stalled in the Republican-controlled Senate, is set to pass in the House today. It is a misnomer and a travesty.
The bill would add to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination on the basis of “sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity,” each of which is categorically distinct from one another and each of which is, more to the point, radically different in origin, nature, and prevalence to the historic problem of racism in the United States.
The Equality Act would redefine sex to include “gender identity,” thus forcing every federally funded entity — most notably schools and colleges — to treat males who declare transgender status as if they were females. It would stamp out religious exemptions by regulating religious nonprofits and even goes so far as to block the Religious Freedom Restoration Act from applying to its provisions. And it would, as National Review’s John McCormack has explained, greatly expand “the number of businesses that count as ‘public accommodations’ under the Civil Rights Act.”
It is neither proportionate nor desirable to use the full weight of the federal government against every injustice, real or imagined. But the bill’s drafters are transparently exploiting the association with a historic bill fighting racial discrimination in order to smuggle in false equivalences and unsupportable claims.
For instance, the bill states that “transgender people have half the homeownership rate of non-transgender people and about 1 in 5 transgender people experience homelessness.” This is alarming, certainly, but what proof is there that the predominant cause for this is discrimination? Psychiatrists and psychologists in the field of gender dysphoria have long observed that, even in instances of social acceptance, mental health co-morbidities are high among this population.
Moral platitudes are similarly deployed to smooth over the bill’s shortcomings. President Biden — whose administration endorsed the Equality Act, and who promised during his campaign to sign it into law within 100 days of office — says that “every person should be treated with dignity and respect.” And who could object? Actually, many people could when “dignity and respect” are hijacked to include a legal requirement to treat men as though they are women in various contexts that would grossly disadvantage females….

Splitting Providence is not logical, but some long-time Democratic gerrymandering since RI lost the 3rd Congressman she had between 1913 and 1933 (for all the rest of her history so far, it’s always been two, and thus four Electoral votes).
Providence now has about 1/6 of the state’s population (the proportion has been as high as one quarter), and Providence County, the northernmost 35% to 40% of the state’s 1,000 square miles, houses about half of the state’s population. So it would be logical to split two districts north and south somewhere parallel to Providence County’s southern boundary.
But that would mean the southern half would be far more likely to elect a Republican, at least from time to time. So while there’s little discernible difference in interest, demography or opinion between Cicilline’s northeastern half of Providence and Langevin’s southwestern half, the two parts each serve as Democratic ballast against less-Democratic rural and suburban voters outside metropolitan Providence.
For a few years before 1991, both RI Representative in Congress were Republican, but Claudine Schneider was persuaded (or tempted) to run unsuccessfully for Senator in 1990 against Claiborne Pell while Ron Machtley (an Annapolis grad who is now president of Bryant University) was the unsuccessful establishment candidate for Governor in 1994 (losing the GOP primary to Lincoln Almond). Machtley’s then-open seat in Congress was won by Patrick Kennedy (D). That’s the last time, ironically just before the Gingrich Wave of 1994-5, that Rhode Island had a Republican in Congress.

Only three Republicans voted for this bill and two of them are exploring a run for Governor of New York.
Really, only three and the debate was so Mike Pence and the wedding cake.
MTG and Trump run the Republican Party. Mitch is along for the ride.

‘The Daily Show’ Reminds Kayleigh McEnany Of Her Woefully ‘Bad COVID Prediction’

If anyone’s not a fan of #ThrowbackThursday, it’s probably former members of the Trump administration.
On Feb. 25, 2020, before becoming White House press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany appeared on Fox Business apparently making a bold prediction about the country under the watch of Donald Trump’s White House.
“We will not see diseases like the coronavirus come here. We will not see terrorism come here, and isn’t that refreshing when contrasting it with the awful presidency of President Obama,” she said.
Of course, that statement aged worse than milk, and one year later, Trevor Noah’s Comedy Central show is reminding McEnany of that.
In a video shared on Twitter, “The Daily Show” resurfaced McEnany’s prediction, juxtaposing it with news of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. now surpassing 500,000 and, of course, the deadly pro-Trump attack at the U.S. Capitol in January.
With the added clips, the video illustrates just how devastatingly terrible that statement actually was.
Oh, and the “awful presidency” of Barack Obama? There’s a clip to perfectly suit that notion too:..

The fact, which james struggles with, is that Giuliani left office as Mayor of NYC, as one of the most popular officeholders to ever leave office (far different than Trump) and was considered a national political hero and one of the most popular people in America. Had he by law been allowed to seek a third term, he would have won very easily.
But January 2002 was a long time ago now and certainly most people who admired Giuliani at the time may have a very different opinion of him.
jamesb says
A LOT of New Yorkers NEVER liked the Mayor…
CG says
At the end of his term, it was a very small number statistically.
Scott P says
Oh God not this Giuliani shit again.
jamesb says
Yea Scott….
But I’m done with it for tonight…
