I agree with ya Larry…..
@LarrySabato
What should be done? ALL OF THESE: 1) Impeach Trump again (but 17 R senators will never vote to convict GOP’s cult leader); 2) Use Section 3 of 14th Amendment to punish Trump AND OTHERS for insurrection; 3) cancel all ex-Prez Trump’s perks; 4) 9/11-style investigation. WHAT ELSE?

McConnell Thinks Trump Committed Impeachable Offenses
“Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, has told associates he believes President Trump committed impeachable offenses and that he is pleased that Democrats are moving to impeach him, believing that it will make it easier to purge him from the party,” the Washington Post reports.
“At the same time, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the minority leader and one of Mr. Trump’s most steadfast allies in Congress, has asked other Republicans whether he ought to call on Mr. Trump to resign in the aftermath of last week’s riot at the Capitol.”

Things starting to slide against Trump in the serious?

IF McConnell were to back impeachment / barring future runs of Trump, you can see a path to 67 for conviction.
Which has never happened before in American history.
Nixon resigned before he could be impeached.
The Senate did not convict in 3 previous trials.

Things just could be going south on Trump and the efforts to get him from running again picking up….

CNN just ran a piece about at least 3 US Senator’s that seemed to working from the inside to rally up Capitol protestors

Looks like there IS gonna be some House GOPer’s joining Dem’s in voting to impeach their party leader Trump…

Ok, which one of you turned me in?
I’ve just been Censured by the Arizona Republican Party.
I only spent two and a half days in Arizona when I was 7 for a Bar Mitzvah.
(Sidenote, the Bar Mitzvah boy from that time, was somewhat recently the villain in a Nightline segment and was involved in a pretty sordid chain of events)

Lots of things should be done…Impeach the asshole, but make it a sideshow rather than the man event…Focus on getting stimulus out, state aid, reducing student loans, infrastructure and clean energy and most importantly vaccine and COVID…due all of that in 150 days, Biden will do a lot to gain the American peoples trust, solidify the Democratic Party and further weaken the Republican Party which will be in tatters…they are going to snipe at one another for a long time because of this impeachment vote…McConnell is actually incredulous and beside him self in how many losses he took last week, the senate and now the demolition of his party after the riots…he might even vote to impeach cause he finally woke up (for at least the time being) into how dangerous the rhetoric on his side can get…
Hawley and Cruz could be censured, but nothing else…some house folks could get more than that with the role some of them played…not even mentioning what will happen to the congress folks who refused to wear masks and actually transmitted coronavirus to their colleagues…those assholes have a nice spot in hell if one of these congress members die…

“You can either go down in history as a patriot, or you can go down in history as a pussy.”

Lyndsey Graham apparently criticized capitol police for not adequately protecting him and others. This after years of sucking up to Trump and implicitly supporting Trump’s record of incendiary language. Such a despicable character. The word “pussy” doesn’t adequately describe him.
Keith says
Criticized? Apparently he was screaming at them for not protecting him sans mask.
I bet he put two and two together and knew that if one of his fellow Republican protester got their hands on him he would be facing those gallows they built on the Capitol grounds. He must have pissed himself.
Evidently the House Republicans turned into Super Spreaders during this attack, refusing to wear masks during close quarter lockdown. They also are refusing to walk through metal detectors entering the House Floor.
Does anyone doubt that some of them aided and abetted the terrorists when they attacked the Capitol?

This time it’s financial. The exodus of big money from the GOP in the wake of the Trump attempted coup is what makes it different this time I think.
The best thing for the Republican Party would be for their most fervent base go completely apolitical.
This would cripple them in upcoming elections but it may be the only way back for the party.
Zreebs says
By definition, the most fervent base won’t go away. I don’t see how most Republicans can even be nominated if they don’t have at least some significant support among their most fervent base.
This base took years to build up with lies about a whole host of issues: guns, coal jobs, manufacturing jobs, gays, uni-sex bathrooms, etc, and so why is that really any different than the lies we hear now? But the GOP won’t be successful in changing unless they admit what caused the problem in the first place. But if the do, they won’t get nominated. Catch 22. As the Lincoln Project stated, the GOP needed to Lose big – and they didn’t.
Scott P says
For decades it was a dog whistle. Under Trump it went to a bullhorn.
For the past few years the Republican Party was able to thread the needle by holding on to it’s corporate donors and only losing a bit of it’s suburban support while amping up the rural base by using the bullhorn instead of the dog whistle.
But all that started to fall apart in 2020 and it’s accelerating in 2021 with the loss of 2 Senate seats in formerly red Georgia.
Going back to the dog whistle may not be acceptable to the rural base. They’ll see it as backing down and a lot of them may just tune out. And while that may get some of the corporate donors back suburban voters seem to have soured on the Trump GOP brand regardless.
Keith says
Enough of them already did to give us two Senators from Georgia.

I’ve been checking but it looks like Ga will NOT certify the Senate results until the 22nd two days AFTER Biden becomes President…Leaving the Senate in GOP hands in McConnell’s hands to decide if Biden’s cabinet has to wait….
I saw one county is actually in the process of auditing its vote, which won’t change the results
