The State of the Virus
Update for Jan. 15
- About 3,300 people are dying from the coronavirus every day in the United States. The country is fast approaching 400,000 total deaths.
- New York City is averaging more than 6,000 new cases a day. On a per capita basis, the situation on Long Island is even worse.
- Case numbers have fallen sharply across the Midwest in recent weeks, but that progress seems to be slowing. Nebraska, which is reporting fewer than half as many cases as in mid November, has plateaued over the last two weeks.
- The vaccine rollout continues to move slowly. As of Friday, about 10.6 million people had received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, still far below the government’s goal for December….

New York City is set to run out of vaccines by Thursday if the state doesn’t receive more doses, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday.
The mayor added as the city is vaccinating people “faster and faster,” the city needs more doses.

LI’s seven-day COVID-19 positivity rate is highest in New York, Cuomo says
Long Island’s seven-day COVID-19 positivity average rate is the highest in New York state, a development that Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday called “problematic,” as he touted the increased pace of vaccinations in the state even as supply issues persist.
The 7.84% seven-day positivity average stood ahead of every other region, including more than 2 percentage points above New York City’s rate of 5.73%, according to the governor….
