This isn’t gonna be something his party leader President Trump will do…
But with Joe Biden saying he’ll work with Republicans…
One would hope that the Biden pandemic people would look over the Senator Romney ideas to expand the availability of vaccine shots…
The 2012 Republican presidential nominee called for action after it emerged that 2.8 million Americans had received their first dose, far short of the 20 million the Trump administration promised by the end of 2020.
“That comprehensive vaccination plans have not been developed at the federal level and sent to the states as models is as incomprehensible as it is inexcusable,” Romney said in a statement.
More than 345,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the United States, equal to one in every 950 people. The country ranks 16th in per capita deaths in the world.
Meanwhile, the United States was set to pass another milestone on Friday, surpassing 20 million cases since the start of the pandemic with a record number of 125,000 COVID-19 patients in the hospital.
With Democratic President-elect Joe Biden not taking office until Jan. 20, Romney is one of the few leading Republicans to openly criticize fellow Republican President Donald Trump….

His plan is sensible…use medics, veterinarians and medical students to vaccinate and be prepared for allergic reactions…
Use schools like polling stations while kids are out…
Seems so sensible it will never get done…SMH

True THAT….

Actually I think Biden is going to attempt something similiar.
His stinging criticism of Trumps “leave it to the states” plan means he’s got to propose something nationwide in scope.
Quite frankly this rather robotic routine of having some health professional telling everybody to “wear masks, practice social distancing and wash your hands” is beyond old.Everybody knows that and responsible people have been doing that for ten months now.
It is time ,with the advent of the vaccines ,for major national action.Romney has laid out a prototype .He admitted that it may have flaws but let’s get moving.
This is Bidens challenge.Trump is no longer relevant to any of this.Hit the ground running I say.Mobilize the entire apparatus of the federal government.Bring in private companies.Time is wasting. So are lives!
Scott P says
I agree. And Biden adopting Romney’s vaccination strategy would be a far more substantive example of reaching out to Republicans than appointing one to a low level cabinet position.
My Name Is Jack says
Absolutely.
Indeed,if I was Biden, I would immediately call Romney in for consultations on the matter ,as it is obvious that he has given it a great deal of thought and has some experience in large scale things such as this.
Of course the Trumpers would label him a RINO and denounce him for meeting with an “illegitimate “ President.

Sadly, if the US Government had given the Vaccine distribution over to Amazon we all would have had whatever amount of vaccine made already delivered and injected…I am joking of course, but only a little…
The Government has to learn how to be a distribution agent, might be best to enlist those who have massive experience moving packages across the country…Amazon, Fed EX, UPS, DHL, USPS, Walmart, McDonals, etc…
Chicken Nuggets and Vaccines…
I think they should also use churches as possible vaccination spots…in all communities, urban, suburban or rural, churches are a central gathering centers that have the capacity to handle vaccine centers…get a Wafer and Jab for my Catholic friends…They have done this with testing in New York…
jamesb says
I for one would LOVE to see Amazon broken up into separate pieces….
I b believe they have gotten entirely TOO BIG…..
Bdog?
You are being a capitalist….
Amazon would be about the money….
Poor people would be shit out of luck….
My Name Is Jack says
How would “poor people” be hurt if the government contracted with Amazon to deliver the vaccine to predetermined points?
Whatever one thinks of Amazon ,it is a proven entity as far as being an efficient delivery system
We definitely need to be thinking out of the box as to setting up the distribution as well as the actual administering of the vaccine.
All this should have been done months ago,but here we are ,
and President Biden will have to confront this in less than three weeks.
jamesb says
‘Given’ over to Amazon?
So people can just take the shots themselves?
I mean it’s fucking medicine …
You don’t just deliver it to people….
Biden WILL have to have his people assume some control over the process…
But the vaccine isn’t going ‘to’ Amazon or even the Post Office….
As I have pointed out…
They need to order less for Pfizer and and MORE from Moderna which is NOT as temperature sensitive and CAN be used by doctors and clinics around the country…
THAT would enable the shots to reach ALL of American including the worst effected….
jamesb says
I’m no knocking Bdog…
I understand his goal….
jamesb says
On second thought?
Yes…
Amazon and the Post Office could be used to ship to Moderna’s vaccine to doctors, clinics and even pharmacies since it not so temp sensitive ….
Good direction Bdog….
Just some clarification as who actually administer’s the shots…
My Name Is Jack says
So damn dumb.
I specifically said that the use of Amazon in “distributing “ the vaccine should not be discounted.I didn’t say anything about them administering it .
How does the vaccine get to the places to be administered ?Someone has to “deliver” it.Duh!
As far as “ordering?”
You apparently don’t understand that as of now limited amounts of the vaccine of either are being created,Accordingly, one has to take what one can get.
Another example of a fool just banging away at a keyboard, totally devoid of reasoning or common sense.
CG says
I do not think jack nor anyone else is suggesting that the shots be left on people’s front step or be administered by delivery drivers.
Nonetheless, jack’s quasi endorsement of “thinking outside the box” and having a private company potentially deliver a service more effectively than the government is a pretty amazingly radical thing for a non-Republican to say!
My Name Is Jack says
Not really.
This country is in a desperate situation.
We need all the original though we can get .
CG says
In many areas of life we do. There have been desperate situations in America beyond the virus and going back before it. Just one example is the toll of urban violence and gang warfare in places like Chicago.
Generally speaking though, it is good to acknowledge that there are many things the private sector can do more effectively than government, and should be able to do, because government, for all its good intentions, often makes things worse. That is sort of the epitome of conservative thought.
My Name Is Jack says
In this case however ,as Romney noted, the government essentially hasn’t done anything.
There is no “plan.”
I don’t view this as a philosophical question so much as a practical one.
If it makes sense? Then do it.
In the above,I was pointing out that Amazon is a very effective delivery system .If they can distribute the vaccine more effectively ?Go with it.Not because of any political or philosophical reason. It simply makes sense.
jamesb says
Again Great point on Trump not giving a shit…
Biden will attempt to reverse THHAT…
Scott P says
Trump is clearly following the conservative principle of purposely making government inefficient to prove the right wing talking point that “government can’t do anything right”.
He’s not the first conservative Republican to do this and he won’t be the last.
jamesb says
Amazon and the Post Office have two distinct markets….
Amazon has admitted so….
They do not have or want to get into the Post Office business…
FYI around my way?
I see United Parcel going INTO Post Offices …
I meant it when i mentioned poor and i moght add rual deliveries…
Scott P says
Well the Post Office would be an effective delivery system were it not for the Republican appointed Postmaster General’s attempts to dismantle it in a feeble attempt at stealing an election.
But first things first. Get the vaccine delivered as efficiently as safely possible, then reverse GOP attempts at destroying Constitutionally mandated entities.
Zreebs says
I think – as do most Democrats I know – that private companies can deliver a product more effectively than the Government in most cases – just not in all cases.
Anyway, it is interesting that of the four states that businesses must purchase workers compensation from the government instead of private companies, three of them are red states:WY, ND and OH.
Republicans just don’t practice what the believe. You should know that by now.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Zreebs, it might be that the workers’ comp system in North Dakota stretches back a hundred years — long before fracking — to the founding of the [Farmers’] Nonpartisan League in 1915 with the aim of running the Democratic and Republican parties in the interests of small farmers and workers. (The League merged into what is now still the Democratic-Nonpartisan League Party in 1956._
During a brief heyday soon after its founding, the League established the country’s only state bank (The Bank of North Dakota, still extant), grain elevator/flour mill system (also still around) and railroad. It wouldn’t surprise me if that might not also be the origin of a state workmen’s comp system.
Come to think of it, workers’ comp in Rhode Island is administered by a public labor-management co-op called Beacon Mutual Insurance.
jamesb says
Joe Biden
@JoeBiden
Mask up, folks.
Zreebs says
Dave, North Dakota has always had a “monopolistic” workers compensation system – meaning that a business had to purchase coverage from the state fund. This dates back maybe 100 years ago.
The countrywide trend has been to allow private carriers to compete. When I started in the industry, there were six monopolistic states. Now there are four. The last state that went from a monopolistic state to a competitive market state was West Virginia about 10 years ago thanks to Governor Joe Manchin – which was one of his biggest achievements as Governor. Before that, it was Nevada.
Beacon Mutual Insurance is easily the largest workers compensation carrier in Rhode Island, but there are many other carriers and there are no rigorous restrictions for entry into that state. Most large Property Casualty insurers write workers compensation business in Rhode Island.
