Well?
He’s in charge of so many things that can go in several different ways….
On top of that?
Until he makes ‘deal’ (On the filibuster) with Minority Leader McConnell?
He canNOT install Democratic ‘troops’ to lead the Senate committees and actually control things….
The US Senate majority actually rests in a 60 member get….
Not the simple 51….
In the end?
Mitch McConnell will probably get a good bit more of what HE wants then ALL people thought Schumer would Have….
Joe Biden will probably come down on McConnell’s side a bit MORE than a lot of people thought….
Image that?
Much of the current conflict over the Senate rules comes courtesy of veteran Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell (Ky.), who transitioned to minority leader Wednesday after six years as majority leader.
Just hours after Biden’s inauguration, moments after a smiling Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) was first recognized as majority leader, McConnell pointedly noted on the Senate floor that the country elected a smaller House Democratic majority, an evenly split Senate and a “president who promised unity.”
“The people intentionally entrusted both political sides with significant power to shape our nation’s direction,” he said. “May we work together to honor that trust.”
Two days earlier, he had notified his Republican colleagues in the Senate that he would deliver Schumer a sharp ultimatum: agree to preserve the legislative filibuster, the centerpiece of minority power in the Senate or forget about any semblance of cooperation — starting with an agreement on the chamber’s operating rules.
The calculations for McConnell, according to Republicans, are simple. Not only is preserving the filibuster a matter that Republicans can unify around, it is something that potentially divides Democrats, who are under enormous pressure to discard it to advance their governing agenda.
…..
The Senate filibuster has evolved over the course of its history into a de facto supermajority requirement, requiring 60 votes to end debate and advance legislation. Rarely has one party held enough votes to defeat filibusters without at least some cross-aisle cooperation…
…
Without an organizing accord, Republicans remain in the majority of most Senate committees — veteran GOP lawmakers such as Sens. Charles E. Grassley (Iowa), Richard C. Shelby (Ala.) and James M. Inhofe (Okla.) continue as chairs of key panels while veteran Democrats eager to seize the gavels and advance their long dormant agendas can only wait and wonder….
…
The path ahead is likely to be decided by a small group of moderate Democrats, elected from red and purple states, who have signaled support for keeping the filibuster while hinting that their patience for partisan obstruction might not be infinite….
Update…
Sen. Dick Durbin on Sunday said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s demand for absolute protection of the filibuster in the deal to run a 50-50 Senate is a “non-starter.”
“If we gave him that, then the filibuster would be on everything, every day,” the Illinois Democrat told NBC’s Chuck Todd on “Meet the Press” on Sunday morning….
…
He added that the Senate should pass the organizing resolution without the additional McConnell language on protecting the filibuster so that the focus can switch to passing President Joe Biden’s massive Covid-19 relief package….

No comments here on McConnell trying to blackmail Schumer on the fillibuster?
Seems to me that ole Mitch is STILL fucking the Senate Democrats and Biden indirectly even as Minority Leader?
Damn!?
Schumer, if he gets Manchin to go along COULD do EXACTLY what Mitch did and drop the filleribuster whenever he wants to with a simple majority….
WTF is Schumer waiting?
Biden SHOULD have Schumer’s back on this..
No comments on this which IS FUCKED UP….
jamesb says
Well I guess NOBODY here cares about McConnell and Manchin about to make sure the US Senate Majority leader is NOT gonna be able to his thing, and McConnell CAN it seems, eh?
Damn Democrats….
NEVER fucking row together ….
POLITICO
@politico
As the Senate sits in a standoff over the future of the filibuster, Joe Manchin doesn’t know how he can be any clearer.
He “will not vote” to kill the filibuster.
jamesb says
And so Mitch McConnell the MINORITY leader gets his TWO Democrats to let him get over on Schumer on the filibuster….
Get used to this….
McConnell STILL has Democrats by the short hairs in the US Senate….
Schumer and Biden WILL dance when asked to….
Enough with 50/50 Harris is the deciding vote…
She ISN’T….
Manchin WILL be….
REALITY BITES….
jamesb says
Not a peep outta people here?
I will be laughing the next time someone bitches about me and Democrats….
CG says
McConnell is just better at this sort of thing than Schumer or anyone else on your side. It will be part of his legacy as one of the most effective Congressional leaders in history. As the saying goes, “don’t hate the player.”
As for the filibuster, Democrats have always wanted it to remain legislatively when they were in the minority. Joe Biden has spoken very forcefully about how important the filibuster is and should remain as a Senate tool.
So, no surprises here. It will be on Biden, after he gets control of the virus, and his party, to promote an agenda that can appeal across the aisle.
My Name Is Jack says
Yeah sort of like that agenda the Republicans always promote to “appeal” to the Democrats.
Zreebs says
I’m pretty sure that McConnell won’t be highly regarded by historians. Only Majority leaders that work effectively with the other party to benefit the country will be viewed favorably by history.
So what did McConnell accomplish? packing the courts with young conservatives? Tax cut for the wealthy at a time of a massive deficit? And historians will admire that?
jamesb says
I think McConnell will be listed as one the better Congressional tacticians …..
Rightly so…..
The court moves will last for a while …
The ability to out flank Democrats from Obama and maybe on….
We’ll have to see….
jamesb says
Let me be clear…..
Joe Biden is NOT upset about this….
He’ll go along.…
jamesb says
And Schumer looks fucking stupid trying to claim victory on getting screwed…
….’Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) immediately declared victory.
“We’re glad Senator McConnell threw in the towel and gave up on his ridiculous demand. We look forward to organizing the Senate under Democratic control and start getting big, bold things done for the American people,” said Justin Goodman, a spokesman for Schumer.
McConnell’s comments come after Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) reiterated on Monday that they oppose nixing the 60-vote legislative filibuster.
“I do not support doing away with the filibuster under any condition. It’s not who I am,” Manchin told reporters.’
More…
jamesb says
Gonna be a LOT of Democrats getting a reality check on what we’re in for the two years….
jamesb says
Ok….
It appears that reconciliation is going to be the way Democrats will try to get around McConnell on some bills….
They and Biden are betting on it….
Hence the Schumer boasting of a victory….
We’ll see….
The Senate dancing HAS begun…
My Name Is Jack says
Did anyone really expect anything different?
None of this should come as a surprise.
CG says
So, you will be voting for AOC against Schumer in next year’s primary?
CG says
If you don’t, I hear that might make you a “misogynist.”
jamesb says
I really care less about that CG…
jamesb says
Nope…
And she won’t be running against him I’d bet….
CG says
If Schumer is so bad, a lot of people will tell her to run against him. It would make perfect sense.
jamesb says
You are missing something CG….
While I’m annoyed right now?
Chuck Schumer IS THE US Senate MAJORITY LEADER…
That WILL = Billions in funds for the Empire State….
There is little to NO chance AOC is gonna screw THAT up….
CG says
“True believers” don’t care about parochialism. If the left is as angry at Schumer as you seem to be, there will be a push to primary him.
jamesb says
Maybe someone Mickey Mouse….
Not AOC…..
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Although I don’t know the details of the deliberately inscrutable election law of New York state — written by and for the two political machines and election lawyers rather than to benefit the voters, or (especially) insurgent movements, I don’t think it would permit AOC to run simultaneously for both the U.S. Senate and for her current seat in the House of Representatives.
[However it’s at leasst theoretically conceivable to me that she could run for re-election on the Working Families Party ticket while challenging Sen. Schumer’s renomination in the Democratic primary.]
If she must make a choice, then she should keep her useful platform in the House rather than taking the unfavorable gamble on a statewide U.S. Senate seat where the demographics and political views vary very greatly from those of her particular corner of New York City.
Besides that, she’s a political realist who can be flexible enough to support Nancy Pelosi’s speakership; why would she want to make an enemy of a Senate Majority Leader who enjoys great power both statewide and nationally? We’re not talking Joe Crowley (who?)
Zreebs says
I don’t think AOC would run against Schumer either. More likely is that she will endorse someone else to run against him.
Schumer was never as competent as Pelosi is in the House, and he shouldn’t have been majority leader in the first place.
jamesb says
Exactly DSD on second term House Rep.AOC…..
