Yes, it is a political gesture but it does two things; it makes the Republicans go on record with their support for a traitor to our Republic or with their opposition, and it keeps pressure on Trump to dial back his outrageous behavior until he leaves office.

The House will impeach Trump next week for the second time and there will likely be a Senate trial after he leaves office.
There will be a lot of motivation for people in both parties to make it so he cannot run for office again, although it’s not like he could get elected to anything, right?

Democrats would lose the chance to run against their easiest opponent.

I am sure there are plenty of ambitious Senate Republicans who do not to deal with either the reality or the specter hanging over them of a Trump 2024 run (Republican or Indy)
I just know this. He will be the first President to be impeached twice (in one term mind you) and if it comes to a vote in the Senate, it will be a majority voting to convict for the first time ever.
If it were a secret vote (which it shouldn’t be) , it would be damn near unanimous.

Geographically speaking, the closest thing there is a Republican in Congress from my part of Illinois (and it’s really a stretch) is Kinzinger and he will vote to impeach this time I bet.
