Sure the now Minority Leader carried the water for his party leader…
But everyday he saw a misfit , that had taken over his party operate up close…
Despite the media headlines?
McConnell had to talk Trump down from time to time during the last four years…
But Trump had the support of the average Republican voter…
The January 6 Capitol protest and assault proved to be the last straw….
McConnell went public….
That was then….
It’s 3 weeks later….
The Trump scent among his fellow party members has caught McConnell in the throat as it has others….
The anger from the Capitol action is gone…
McConnell has to step back and let the Trump support keep going as a guerrilla war breaks out among his fellow party members….
And keep himself as the leader OVERALL.…
That means doing whatever….
McConnell’s denunciation of Trump won grudging praise from many corners, including people who rarely support him. Norman Ornstein, a political scientist and an emeritus scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, who has been fiercely critical of McConnell, told me, “I was surprised at Mitch’s comments. They were more forthright than I expected. Good for him!” But nobody who has watched McConnell closely over the years views his split with Trump as a genuine moral reckoning. “There is no way that McConnell has had an epiphany and will now change his fundamental approach,” Ornstein said. “He will always act ruthlessly when it serves his own interest.” Indeed, the most remarkable aspect of McConnell’s rupture with Trump may be not that it happened but, rather, that it took so long—and that the leader of the Party in Congress countenanced so much damage along the way.

In my view, McConnell thought that the insurrection and his denunciation of Trump as the perpetrator would rally the troops so to speak.
Assuming that most Republicans In the Senate pretty much felt like he did about Trump, this could be the easiest way to rid themselves of him.
What he didn’t count on was the backlash from rank and file Republicans ,who made clear that they weren’t happy about the anti Trump rhetoric, and certainly weren’t going to simply say ,”impeach him and be rid of him.”
McConnell ,eager to maintain his power as Senate Republican Leader ,essentially went silent on the subject and then this week meekly ,and somewhat contradictorily ,voted for the Paul move to shut the Impeachment bid down as “ unconstitutional.”
This ended McConnells brief bid to make Trump a disgraced exPresident.

Pretty good summation Jack….

There’s simply no appetite among Republicans to hold Trump accountable for anything.
I don’t know why some people on here think there is.

A good many just want the guy to ‘go away’….
He WILL….
But not yet….

It remains to be seen how many rank and file Republicans want Trump to “go away”.
We will see what kind of demand he and his surrogates are in from GOP candidates 6 months from now or 12 months from now.
Could be very little. Could be a lot.
