President-elect Joe Biden is poised to make a final decision in the coming days on his pick for attorney general, a choice that suddenly comes amid a growing sense of optimism from Democrats that their party will control the Senate and will be able to easily confirm the incoming president’s Cabinet nominations.
A person familiar with the deliberations tells CNN that Biden will now decide among three final contenders, including federal Judge Merrick Garland, former Alabama Sen. Doug Jones and former acting attorney general Sally Yates, whose name returned to the top tier with the prospect of Democrats winning Senate control after results of both Georgia run-off racesbecome clear.
CNN projected early Wednesday that Rev. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, will win one of those races, with control of the US Senate dependent on the outcome of the contest between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican David Perdue, which Ossoff was narrowly leading.
Yates has deep experience within the department, and President Donald Trump’s dismissal of her in 2017 after she refused to defend his travel ban in court made her a hero to many Democrats. Yates spoke at the Democratic National Convention in August…..

Doug Jones deserved better. He put himself on the line for his party many times. I am sure Garland will be easily confirmed. He will have to make it clear though that he will not intervene in any way on the Hunter Biden matter
Biden seems to hold it against any Democrat that lost in 2020. He has not given a job to any of them.
Maybe Jones said no to an offer. None of us know, to be fair.

I disagree with Doug Jones on a host of issues, but he has shown more political courage than many others in either party in recent years.
It is a shame some do not appreciate that.

No Republican in the Senate has a problem with Garland. They had a problem with him being nominated during an election year.
I stand by my theory that Garland was not truly put up by Obama to actually sit on the Court but as a talking point for the political fight they lost.
Had Republicans actually called a vote for Garland, he would have suddenly been withdrawn.
Garland was put up as a nominee because he was someone that Republicans just might support (older and moderate). I don’t see even a remote possibility that he would have been withdrawn. Of course if Hillary won the election and the seat still hadn’t been filled, then she might have chosen someone else.
Of course Zreebs is correct and I suspect that Garland’s Supreme Court nomination would have been called up by McConnell for a vote if Hillary had won the election to prevent a more “liberal” nominee from her.
I told folks here a few weeks ago that a “little bird” had told me that it would be Garland if the Democrats took the Senate back in the Georgia special. That would mean that Biden could replace Garland on the DC Circuit with a younger more liberal (and likely black) judge. They won, so Biden pulled the trigger.
People should remember that one of the reasons that Biden was elected was to restore confidence in government. Garland will restore the Department of Justice to an impartial and respected organization. Doug Jones is a big boy and will serve the Administration in another capacity.
I just watched a bunch of treasonous Republicans give a standing ovation to the objection to accepting the Arizona election results. It appears that Mitch has lost control of his membership. They are doing terrible damage to their party. Trump is threatening to march down to the Capitol to protest.
