Maybe?
This IS a nice headline and goal but the underlying way things ARE works against this….
An all electric car would mean result in cuts in jobs across America and oversea’s….
It would do what environmentalist want…
To essentially make fossil fuel’s passe’
Right now?
This planet IS about fossil fuels….
(Vehicle’s NEED to become MORE fuel efficient)
THAT is about whole economies….
It will pivot to what things go into batteries and how to get those things out of the ground and how long will they last?
Also?
Nobody is just gonna stop driving their old cares which will have to be MUCH more fuel efficient in decades to come ….
Of course fossil fuel prices will climb as people use less of it….
The days of the internal combustion engine are numbered.
General Motors said Thursday that it would phase out petroleum-powered cars and trucks and sell only vehicles that have zero tailpipe emissions by 2035, a seismic shift by one of the world’s largest automakers that makes billions of dollars today from gas-guzzling pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles.
The announcement is likely to put pressure on automakers around the world to make similar commitments. It could also embolden President Biden and other elected officials to push for even more aggressive policies to fight climate change. Leaders could point to G.M.’s decision as evidence that even big businesses have decided that it is time for the world to begin to transition away from fossil fuels that have powered the global economy for more than a century.
G.M.’s move is sure to roil the auto industry, which, between car and parts makers, employed about one million people in the United States in 2019, more than any other manufacturing sector by far. It will also have huge ramifications for the oil and gas sector, whose fortunes are closely tied to the internal combustion engine.
A rapid shift by the auto industry could lead to job losses and business failures in related areas. Electric cars don’t have transmissions or need oil changes, meaning conventional service stations will have to retool what they do. Electric vehicles also require fewer workers to make, putting traditional manufacturing jobs at risk. At the same time, the move to electric cars will spark a boom in areas like battery manufacturing, mining and charging stations….
My Name Is Jack says
The oil companies see the handwriting on the wall and are already moving into other areas.
All Electric by 2035?Sounds about right.
jamesb says
If you think the Oil/Gas people are NOT gonna put up fight ur trippin…..
How many MILLIONS of gas/disel driven cars will still be around then?
What will be the cost of the electric cars?
I understand their goal….
But that’s 14 years from now….
And if the foreign car makers don’t hop on board?
My Name Is Jack says
What do you mean “put up a fight.”
What are they going to do?
Outlaw Electric cars?
Anyone with an ounce of sense knows that these type vehicles are the wave of the future,
You do “understand their goal and you’re against it.Youre more concerned about the poor ol oil companies.
Zreebs says
My best guess is that I don’t think James cares about oil companies. He cares that electric cars are more expensive and at his age, the long term implications on the environment don’t concern him.
jamesb says
First of all the obvious…..
Gas comes FROM OIL….
Electric power is generated BY mostly gas feed power plants….
Fossil Fuel isn’t going away….
The US burns less of it every year….
Yes….
Electric and Hybrid cars ARE MORE expensive then gas driven ones…
I have grand children….
I want something breathable for them….
Do I care about gas companies?
Not particularly….NOPE….
Would I like the price of gas to stop going up now?
Oh yea….
The same gas that drives the electric plants?
Keeps my home warm….
YES….
jamesb says
Jack thought BP would go belly up…..
Zreebs says
Your statement is not true. While the long term coal usage has gone down fairly sharply, natural gas usage is actually up and petroleum usage is essentially flat. The US is making much greater use of renewables, but that does not mean that are use of fossil fuels is going down because The US is consuming more energy each year.
Zreebs says
And with regard that you “want something breathable” for your grandchildren, the far bigger problem with fossil fuels is global warming.
jamesb says
Global warming and Energy are intertwined….
The less fossil fuels…
The less in global warming….
The question is?
Will MORE oil going to this country try bring fossil usage back up from the general level you say and the decline I point to recently?
jamesb says
Trump fought against the California effort to increase miles per gallon of gas….
jamesb says
Check this link which reports the drop in petroleum usage starting Jan 2020 and continuing thru out the year…..
It does show modest increases in 2019…..
The same agency predicts that there WILL BE a down trend in US energy usage going forward even with post pandemic increases …
jamesb says
Biden’s foreign policies are seen as moving to actually INCREASE the amount of oil coming to America…
Over the past four years, U.S. oil sanctions on Iran and Venezuela alone removed around three million barrels per day from the current market, “while military tensions with Iran, unprecedented pressure on OPEC+, and a strategically unpredictable Middle East policy all contributed to periods of market volatility,” he said in emailed commentary Wednesday.
Biden will “lead U.S. foreign policy on a diametrically different trajectory, a dynamic which skews geopolitical oil market risks to the bearish side for the first time since 2015,” said Sheldon.
He believes there is “significant upside supply risks if the Biden administration’s diplomatic efforts with Iran and Venezuela bear fruit.”
Sheldon estimates that Iranian sanctions relief may bring back as much as one million barrels per day of oil to the market by the end of this year, and another one million barrels per day by mid-2022, “although the diplomatic timeline is likely to be slower.”
In Thursday dealings, oil prices edged lower following data from the American Petroleum Institute, which revealed a surprise weekly increase in U.S. crude-oil supplies…

Zreebs says
Yes james, A lot of businesses were closed during 2020 and if you are closed, you are not using much energy. My company for example required all of it employees to work from home, so none of our offices were open. And anyone who works for an insurance company knows that the number of car accidents was way down in 2020 because people weren’t driving to work. If people aren’t driving, there is less usage of fossil fuels. If you were to show a chart with a longer term time frame you would have gotten a very different answer with regard to energy usage.
jamesb says
The question will be CAN the movement to electric cars by GM be followed across the board ?
Most auto companies do have them , but as u point out….
Their price and convenance are the issues for vast majority of Americans…
Is 14 years reasonable ?
Ford led in car sales in 2019….Toyota came in second and GM third…..
Hmmmm?
Zreebs says
And your comment “of course fossil fuel prices will climb as people use less of it” shows a rather remarkable lack of knowledge of the most basic concepts of economics. But of course you will continue to state otherwise.
jamesb says
Well Z…..
Here’s history…..
We got toilets that use LESS water…
That meant smaller water bills right?
So water company made LESS money, right?
So guess what Z?
THEY RAISED THEIR RATES❗️
Keith says
That’s a ridiculously limited an inaccurate statement given that the objective is water conservation.
You get what you pay for whether it’s clean air or water.
If you’re concerned about gas prices live somewhere you can get places on public transportation.
The pandemic has shown how air quality can improve with less use of fossil fuel.
We own two hybrid SUV vehicles and they get great mileage. We will trade them for electric that uses 110.
Fossil fuels are, like the Republican Party, a thing of the past.
My Name Is Jack says
Next we will hear from James is:
“Drill, Drill, Drill”
jamesb says
Never the less Keith?
The water company STILL has budget….
Less money = Hole in the budget….
The prices went up….
Electric cars and Hybrid cars cost MORE money right now….
I’m just stating the realty of FACTS….
You guys can debate till ur blue in the face….
Zreebs says
We can debate until we are blue in the face, but you still won’t understand what we are talking about.
jamesb says
And U don’t acknowledge something I KNOW U understand….
Companies and government will RAISE rices before cutting due to less income….
Zreebs says
Water bills have generally been rising because of an aging infrastrucure that is become increasingly more costly to repair. Probably other reasons too.
And because you brought up toilets as the reason for your water bills, I suspect that you personally don’t save water with those toilets because you have to flush multiple times at one sitting. Consider discussing your problem with your doctor. I am not equipped to solve your problem.
Keith says
Zreebs makes a great point.
Our infrastructure still requires maintenance. Flint Michigan comes to mind.
Of course, electric or not, cars will still drive on roads that require lots of repair. The “gas” tax needs raising and we need to come up with alternative ways to raise other revenue as fuel consumption declines.
Zreebs says
And the gas tax further encourages conversation. The reality is that there are people who will only practice conservation if they have an economic incentive to do so.
Keith says
And additional revenue means additional infrastructure development, and that means good paying jobs for people who pay taxes.
jamesb says
yes ur right Keith….
What pays for that infrastructure upgrade?
TAXES!
jamesb says
You guys ARE scarring me…..
NOTHING IS FREE because you just want it……
Chemical free food cost MORE in the supermarket….
Wake up for goodness sake’s….
We all want to be healthy….
But it WILL cost us MORE….
jamesb says
Biden is on the right track by pushing for rhe $15 min wage….immigration and stimulus money to light up the economy….
A strong economy = increased taxes
Keith says
James, we already acknowledged that fact, and they need to go up if we are ever going to keep up with our competitors internationally.
Infrastructure week never came now did it?
Our nation’s transportation, power grid, and water infrastructure is in need of a serious upgrade.
So, yes, they will go up. We have already acknowledged that fact. So?
jamesb says
ALL TOILETS Z….
It’s a Federal Rule….
You flush MORE because the water Pressure is less…..
Gosh…..
The new flush valves try to pump up the flush pressure ….
Zreebs says
James, do research on “what happens to price when there is a reduction in demand?” The answer is that prices fall, not rise.
and since when do you understand how businesses run? If a business say “I am now getting less business so I must raise prices”, that business will likely go under- especially in a competitive environment. Is that what happened when your businesses failed?
The example you chose (Water) is a monopoly regulated by the government, so the answer is more complex, but the regulators are not going to grant a rate increase just because consumers are using less water.
You like to simplify everything, which is why I prefer to avoid detailed discussions with you. And no matter what evidence is presented, you always stand by what you previously said anyway. So I usually spend more time responding to other people than you.
I am not trying to be mean. But that is the way I feel.
jamesb says
No problem Z….
We’re here to look at things from different angle’s….
And we don’t have to always agree….
On the regulators?
They WILl grant annual increases since the increases earn THEM money also….
My gas, electric and water rates have NEVER gone down….
Heck?
Even the .99 cents stories are charging more then days….
Like I said….
Hybrid and Electric cars cost MORE not less…..
Add my Verizon bill to the list…..
My Name Is Jack says
So?
If past is prelude,a lot of things will cost more in fifteen years.
Autos?Probably
That has nothing to do of course with the topic of the post.
Guess what?Gas powered cars will too if they’re still around.
This is an industry realizing the climate change is real and that changes are coming.
Why anyone would oppose trying to save the planet from things much worse that “the cost of cars will go up” is beyond me.
Well, at least we know where you stand..”F*** the kids and grandkids I don’t want to pay more for a car?”
jamesb says
He, he, he….
At least we’re consistent on this thru the years eh, Jack?
And NOPE….
I do NOT want to KEEP paying more for essentially the same darn thing….
Makes sense to me….
