THAT does NOT mean they’ll agree on their politics….
But like 20 years ago when the last 50/50 Congress was around….
The United States Senate…
IS a ‘rules’ and ‘tradition’ place…
For McConnell it works for several reasons….
First to keep a check on his own party members that might want to be Trump types that McConnell REALLY seems to have NOT liked , and second to keep his hand in things , finally ….To have some idea how things will run after 4 years of Trumo going in 5 different directions…
For Schumer it works for several reasons also….
He’ll be the Majority leader with VP Harris giving him any tie vote edge….
But by a slim majority and he has to be worried about West Virginia Sen. Manchin , who as a Democrat has been known to vote with the Republicans more than. any other person in his party…
Schumer needs to know when McConnell could use the rules to slow or stop things in their tracks in the Senate….
Schumer also will have President Biden on his side….
And with their majority Democrats will run the Committee chairs…
And THAT will help him deal with McConnell to get deals done….
Biden NEEDS McConnell’s help for anything that needs a ‘super Majority” of 60 Senator’s…
In the immediate time?
Both Democrat’s need McConnell to go along with beginning split sessions in the Senate to get Biden’s cabinet people confirmed and to work, to get work started on another stimulus bill and dance the impeachment trial thru the Senate….
McConnell would like nothing more then to lock Trump out the chance to come back and spoil things for him and the establishment Grand ole’ Party….
THAT is supposed to be thru actually convicting Trump of the insurrection charge with a super majority so they have a simple majority vote to finish his ability to run for President and maybe even cancel some of his other Presidential post office benefits….
For McConnell?
The Trump era gone seems to be able to give him some breathing room….
But McConnell and his people will NOT STOP being the opposition party to the Democrats…
The negotiations between Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell have been built largely around how the Senate operated the last time the body was split 50-50: When George W. Bush initially became president in 2001. Final details are still being sorted out between the two leaders, sources said.
