In order to get the stimulus/virus bill that Congress is working on right now?
Republicans would not agree to giving more money to tapped out local and state governments….They have seen tax revenue drop and have had to spend more money on virus assistance ….
During the Trump admin high time THAT was NOT an issue…
It IS now…
Worried about things (Trump is NOT) …Joe Biden has pressed Democrats in Congress to move ahead without the money for the local/state governments so a bill can get passed….
Biden will have to manuever money for the left behind local/state governments after he gets sworn in in a month….
As lawmakers race to put the final touches on a $900 billion bipartisan stimulus package, one thing is becoming clear: Congress has left a significant challenge for the incoming president, Joseph R. Biden Jr., and his efforts to revive the faltering economy.
To seal the deal after months of struggle, lawmakers agreed to exclude a direct stream of money for state and local governments, which Republicans objected to as a blue state “bailout” but Democrats said was needed to prevent job cuts and economic pain.
Mr. Biden has promised to help local governments, which are struggling with plunging tax revenue and increased costs, creating huge budget gaps that have already resulted in 1.3 million state and local jobs lost since March. Economists warn that, without further help, states and cities could further slow the economic recovery by cutting more jobs and spending.
“States and cities are already facing large, large budget shortfalls this year,” Mr. Biden said this month. “They’ve already laid off more than a million workers. Even more teachers, firefighters, cops will lose their jobs unless federal government steps up now.”…
Note….
This seems to be a continuation of Republicans bias against Democratic states as they did in the 2017 tax bill elimination of the state and local tax deductions….

Well if Republicans are thinking this is a “blue state” issue?
They better do their homework better.
Local governments in ruby red South Carolina are laying off workers and dramatically cutting services in many instances due to tye current economic situation.
It’s unusual too because Republicans “claim” to be big supporters of local governments.
Of course, they “claim” lots of things.

Jack?
How are South Carolina House and Senator’s gonna vote on the cuts?
They worried about their constituents or McConnell and Trump supporters?

The Republican version of Defund the Police (& Firefighters & EMT’s & … )
But remember that (under America’s Mayor) they (unlike those weasly pro-Jihad Democratic politicians) were The Real Heroes of 9/11.

Agreed with the first half of your take DSD…Republican Version of Defund the Police…I like that…same result just different mechanism of doing and and different motive.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
The second part, Bdog, was (perhaps clumsily) trying to point out the hypocrisy of Republicans who love to stand in front of uniforms while they declare the depth of their admiration for heroic police and firefighters, while strangling the state budges that pay them and keep them on the force.
jamesb says
DSD nailed THAT on the we like pimping the cops but all the sudden ain’t giving their bosses money to stop laying them off?
