    • Republicans Cheer On Trump 2024 Run

      “Congressional Republicans were slow to embrace Donald Trump’s White House campaign in 2016. But the ousted president will have plenty of support on Capitol Hill should he run again in 2024,” Politico reports.

      “Trump is even getting cheered on publicly by some of the very Republicans who could seek higher office in the future. Even in defeat, Trump’s hold on the party remains strong.”

      So it wasn’t exactly smooth sailing, but after four of the longest, loudest, most exhausting years anyone can remember, we’re on the verge of getting Trump out of the White House. Now we need to find a way to get him out of our faces.

      It won’t be easy. He is, after all, an entertainer in a society that consumes a lot of entertainment. His rallies are essentially stand-up comedy shows he can take on the road or to a cable network. His diehard fans will keep Trump in the public eye, but they can’t keep him in his preferred location at the center of the universe. For that, he’ll need help from the rest of us.

      Can we deny Trump the ratings, the click counts, the social media buzz he lives for? For the sake of one pair of ears that could use a rest, I hope so. I worry most about his avowed enemies, many of whom are addicted to him as surely as his worshipers are. Outrage, like opiates, doesn’t have to make you happy to hook you.

      What about the media? Their golden goose, as Trump called himself, is bound to lay fewer eggs as a private citizen. It’s hard to imagine what Trump-centric outfits like Fox News and the New York Times will do without him.

      I doubt they’ll unceremoniously drop him: they are for-profit corporations and likely to continue covering him until their numbers tell them whether he’s still a money maker. Again, the answer will depend on us….

        • On the contrary, Donald Trump will be incandescent with his (usually) uncontrollable fury that the U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware didn’t make such a revelation before November 3rd.

          (Maybe he or she did, but the Bidens withheld that information from the public until the Safe Harbor date passed.)

          • The U.S. Attorney followed the Justice Department guidelines and did not begin the investigation during the campaign.

            If Trump would be mad at anyone, it would be at the people in the Justice Department for going by the book.

              • No, it doesn’t. There is no reason to believe Trump has anything to do with it.

                Obviously, knowing Trump, he will be mad this was not made public during the campaign.

                Biden’s hands will be tied on this (and the matter of the U.S. Attorney for Delaware) when he is President, as should be the case. Let’s have normalcy reign again.

                • There is zero reason to believe that Trump would have had any knowledge about this investigation. If he did, he would have almost certainly talked about publicly.

                  Trump was trying to blackmail Ukraine into investigating (or at least pretending to investigate) Hunter Biden, and what I said then was that if Hunter Biden had done anything illegal, that the United States should be the ones doing the investigation.

                  Of course Hunter Biden has not been charged with anything thus far, let alone convicted. Important to keep that in mind, but certainly nobody is above the law in America, no matter how they might be related to the President.

                    • Yes, there is a way it is not political. It’s called the Criminal Justice system, Just because someone is the son of a politician you like does not mean that they get free passes to have done things.

                      This has apparently been under investigation for more than a year before Joe Biden announced his candidacy.

                      If Donald Trump somehow “made this happen” in his Justice Department, I think there would be indications of it. Common sense dictates Trump knew nothing about this since he was barking up the Ukraine tree instead and got himself impeached for it.

                      There are a lot of questions about Hunter Biden and have been for a long time. This is not remotely surprising. The main thing is that Joe Biden is not implicated in any of this, despite the claims of Trump in the campaign. As President, Biden needs to stay the heck away from this investigation and let the process play out.

                      (we can think though about how crazy 2021 can be though if Trump, Pence, Biden, and Harris all serve as President)

                  • Anybody can have “dastardly thoughts” or conspiracy paranoia, but there is no indication that anything has not been done by the book. Trump is on his way out and is irrelevant to all this. The process needs to play out of course. The concept of Hunter Biden causing a headache for his father is certainly nothing new or surprising.

              • All US Attorneys are appointed by a President. Typically, a new President will replace them.

                It would be a bad look politically for Biden to remove the guy in Delaware though after this.

                Also, the two Democrat U.S .Senators in Illinois are asking Biden to keep on the U.S. Attorney for Northern Illinois selected by Trump, considering the high profile ongoing investigations happening here.

                • I looked it up and the U.S. Attorney for Delaware has also served as the Acting U.S. Attorney and First Assistant U.S. Attorney for Delaware under both GWB and Obama. So, he’s a career guy in the office.

                  • Typical Trump was to suddenly fire all the U.S. Attornies at the start of his term just in order to slow down or shut down investigations into Trumpworld by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara.

                    One casualty was the respected straight-arrow U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island, Peter Neronha, who was elected in 2018 as the Attorney General of the State of Rhode Island.

                    Joe Biden wouldn’t want to be, and wouldn’t want to be seen, doing the same thing at the start of his term when his family is involved.

                    But CG is right, I think that when the White House changes hands between parties, most of the incumbent U.S. Attornies retire or are replaced some time over the first year or two.

  8. Time’s “Person of the Year” for 2020 being announced within the hour. For the first time ever, its a primetime show on NBC. I just refreshed my memory and looked at each cover since this was first given out in 1927.

    We are told the three finalists are Biden, Trump, and Fauci.

    The winner of the Presidential election is usually chosen by not always. Some truly bad people have in the past been chosen, but Time has gone away from that in recent decades.

    Frankly, this year, out of those three, Biden should be third. I would put someone like George Floyd in front as well.

    Biden won the Presidency, but the election and the year, and everything has been about Trump, for good or bad, and there has been a lot of bad. Trump should “win” this distinction.

      People of the Year are Biden… and Harris.

      I do not even think they are the MVP’s of their own campaign. That would have to go to Jim Clyburn. Biden is not President if for not Clyburn. Not even close to getting the nomination. And for Harris, to think, it is just over exactly one year since she dropped out of the Presidential race herself.

      If not for Clyburn, either Trump wins another term or the next President is Bloomberg or perhaps Buttigieg or Klobuchar.

      As for Time, they will pretty much always pick whomever win the Presidential election that year. This has been the case for every winner going back to 2000. The last time they did not pick an incoming President was 1988 and the last time they did not pick a new incoming President who was not already VP was 1968.

      • Trump will now be suing Time Magazine saying nobody who won Florida and Ohio has ever not been chosen as Man of the Year… besides Clinton, and Reagan, and Bush 41. and Nixon, and Nixon eight years before and Eisenhower and…

        • Most likely, Trump will only be Man of the Year once in his life, tied thus far with Hitler, Putin, the Ayatollah Khomeni, Lindbergh, and Rudy Giuliani.

    All 50 states and D.C. have now certified their 2020 election results:

    Biden 81,282,376 (51.3%)
    Trump 74,222,576 (46.9%)

    That’s a 2.4 point margin swing against Trump vs. 2016 and a 15.9% increase in votes cast.

  14. I think your political beliefs are in transition. Whether you have completed the transition is unknown. I think you now deep down realize that Trump still controls the GOP. The Trump power in the GOP is disappointing to probably all of us on this site – although you would prefer to believe that we are secretly cheering him on. My guess is that Biden won’t be the last Democrat you vote for though. We’ll see.

      Interesting that Zreebs and bdog think I will vote for a Democrat again while jack and Scott seem to scoff at that concept and say no way I will do so. Of course, I do not know myself what the future holds. I am hopeful that a viable, inclusive, center-right party will exist.

      • I think you are still willing to justify things Republicans did in the past, but for whatever reason, you seem to be more critical of things now that in the past I think you would have justified. The GOP has not changed as much in these past four years as you think.

        I agree with you that you don’t think your beliefs are in transition. All of us (and that includes you) change all of the time without really realizing it. When I first knew you, you would never criticize Republicans. I even recall you saying so in a post.

        Lindsey Graham has been two-faced for a long time (although perhaps it was less obvious when McCain was alive), and you once said he was among your favorite politicians. I don’t think that is true anymore.

        I don’t think it is likely you will become acDemocrat. I only said that Biden won’t be the last Democrat you vote for.

      • I believe CG is and remains a committed Republican.He admitted a couple of weeks ago that he wished to formally proclaim himself such (although I think all here really never considered him anything else) .

        His disagreement with the party is focused on the person of Donald Trump,although he found his policy moves far less disagreeable.He also seems to believe that a former President Trump will have far less influence on the party than he presently commands.Accordingly ,and despite the fact that he may end up supporting those who were foot soldiers for the fallen ex President, he will once again feel comfortable formally returning to the Republican ranks.

        I agree that we all change as time goes on without realizing it. I was more conservative in my 30s and 40s than I am today.so in that respect I agree that such applies to all of us, CG too.

  15. NJ recently became the first state in which more than 1 out of every 500 people who was alive in February are now dead from COVID-19.

    Other states with more than one COVID-19 death for every 1000 people alive are: NY 1.8, MA 1.6, ND 1.5, CT 1.5, LA 1.5, RI 1.4, SD 1.4, MS 1.4, IL 1.2, MI 1.1, DC 1.0, AZ 1.0 and IN 1.0

    Note also that these numbers underestimate the true COVID-19 effect because some people died of COVID-19 without being diagnosed, and others died of other causes because they were afraid to go to the hospital.

    • Also the experts actually have no REAL idea how many people have been affected because a good amount are asymptomatic….

      The numbers are a grim reminder of how bad the pandemic is….

            (1) Agreeing that the Justice Dept could find no fraud that would have re-elected Maximum Leader (the People’s Friend), and

            (2) Refraining from comments about a politically-sensitive investigation during an election campaign (this year Hunter Biden, unlike James Comey four years ago).

            Typical Trumpical gratitude. At some vaguely distant point, he may run out of betrayable friends.
