A new poll shows almost half of Republicans think Trump “rightfully won”.
Will the party get past it’s grievance before the midterms midterms? Maybe. But if this much 0f the party think the election was somehpw “stolen” from them with no evidence of fraud and therefore no remedy to stop evil shadowy Democrats from somehow doing it again–will they turn up to vote? Time will tell.
If you remember Democratic and progressive response to Bush v. Gore and the minority election victory of Donald Trump (Esquire’s Charles Peirce still puts an asterisk after President*), then you have to make some allowance for losers’ remorse and disbelief.
But this “Stolen Election” grievance seems to go beyond the normal reaction.
Just think how unlikely this kind of reaction would have been in 1976, 1980 and 1984. Both sides accepted that Carter beat Ford, and then that Reagan beat Carter (and later Mondale).

Major breaking news: locally that is. St. Louis Mayor Lyda Keewson has announced she will not seek a second term. The Democratic primary is in March and she would have faced a tough road to be reelected.
What’s the situation there?
She’s not been a popular mayor. Won narrowly in 2017 in a field that included several candidates (4 I believe).
Starting next year we are switching to a runoff in the city primaries and she may have been afraid she would not make the top 2

Re: Anti-science and the Republican Party after the Trump presidency — David Brooks in today’s New York Times:
In a recent Monmouth University survey, 77 percent of Trump backers said Joe Biden had won the presidential election because of fraud. Many of these same people think climate change is not real. Many of these same people believe they don’t need to listen to scientific experts on how to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
We live in a country in epistemological crisis, in which much of the Republican Party has become detached from reality. Moreover, this is not just an American problem. All around the world, rising right-wing populist parties are floating on oceans of misinformation and falsehood. What is going on?
Many people point to the internet — the way it funnels people into information silos, the way it abets the spread of misinformation. I mostly reject this view. Why would the internet have corrupted Republicans so much more than Democrats, the global right more than the global left?
My analysis begins with a remarkable essay that Jonathan Rauch wrote for National Affairs in 2018 called “The Constitution of Knowledge.” Rauch pointed out that every society has an epistemic regime, a marketplace of ideas where people collectively hammer out what’s real. In democratic, nontheocratic societies, this regime is a decentralized ecosystem of academics, clergy members, teachers, journalists and others who disagree about a lot but agree on a shared system of rules for weighing evidence and building knowledge.
This ecosystem, Rauch wrote, operates as a funnel. It allows a wide volume of ideas to get floated, but only a narrow group of ideas survive collective scrutiny. “We let alt-truth talk,” Rauch said, “but we don’t let it write textbooks, receive tenure, bypass peer review, set the research agenda, dominate the front pages, give expert testimony or dictate the flow of public dollars.”
Over the past decades the information age has created a lot more people who make their living working with ideas, who are professional members of this epistemic process. The information economy has increasingly rewarded them with money and status. It has increasingly concentrated them in ever more prosperous metro areas.
While these cities have been prospering, places where fewer people have college degrees have been spiraling down: flatter incomes, decimated families, dissolved communities. In 1972, people without college degrees were nearly as happy as those with college degrees. Now those without a degree are far more unhappy about their lives….

I saw something interesting that surprised me at least somewhat. Listed below in order are the states with the highest percentage of people residing in the state with an advanced graduate degree:
DC, MA, MD, CT, VA, NY, VT, NJ, CO, NH, DE, IL, WA, RI, OR, CA, KS, MN, PA, ME, GA, NM, UT, MI and HI.
Notice anything common about these states? If so, is there causation for the very high correlation?
The color ‘Blue’?
yes – 23 of those 25 states this year were blue, including the top 16. That is an extremely strong correlation.
It appears that the only blue states missing from the top 25 were WI (a little surprised about that one) AZ and NV.
There is really nothing new or unusual about that. Lawyers (and professors) have always tilted heavily towards Democrats.
I am sure Trump did worse with MBAs though than Republicans have before and physicians and dentists as well.
and clearly a lot of ticket splitters this cycle who voted Republican down ballot.
And THAT IS why Joe Biden IS gonna disappoint some who voted for him from the left and why Biden will have to keep disappointing them if Democrats don’t want a repeat of the 2010 midterm results….
It is certainly true that people with advanced have been trending more Democratic over time and are now among the Democratic Party’s most loyal supporters. But Lawyers and university professors do not make up a large percent of the population. There is certainly something else going on.
If we were to a study of the percentage of black people in a state, we wouldn’t find that states with a high percentage of black people are disproportionately in states that vote Democratic – even though black people vote overwhelmingly Democratic – even more so than people with advanced degrees.
So why is the first example so overwhelmingly true, but the second example is probably not true at all?
As a side note, I know of many people with advanced degrees, but only a small percentage are lawyers or university professors.
Both of those are in Biden’s EC column also….
This is not all that new, because 20 years ago, I found the same thing about Bush & Gore states when I downloaded various Census tables and ranked them up or downward (I wish I still had the spreadsheet, but that was a couple of computers & hard drives ago, so I fear I don’t).
Utah was the anomaly among Bush states (together with another state I can’t recall accurately) in having high education and high family income. Because of the relative size of Utah families, household income was quite high but individual income was rather low.
This was also true for negative social indicators: Bush states (for all their religious fidelity) tended to have higher poverty rates, higher crime, less stable marriages and more births outside marriage.
