The inflammatory behavior that has alienated voters beyond his base has long posed the most significant impediment to Mr. Trump’s re-election. But one week after he rampaged through the first presidential debate and then was hospitalized with the coronavirus, only to keep minimizing the disease as it spread through his White House, the president’s conduct is not only undermining his own campaign but threatening his entire party.
New polls show Mr. Trump’s support is collapsing nationally, as he alienates women, seniors and suburbanites. He is trailing not just in must-win battlegrounds but according to private G.O.P. surveys, he is repelling independents to the point where Mr. Biden has drawn closer in solidly red states, including Montana, Kansas and Missouri, people briefed on the data said.
Nowhere has Mr. Trump harmed himself and his party more than across the Sun Belt, where the electoral coalition that secured a generation of Republican dominance is in danger of coming apart.
“There are limits to what people can take with the irresponsibility, the untruthfulness, just the whole persona,” said Jeff Flake, the former Republican senator from Arizona. Mr. Flake is crossing party lines to support Mr. Biden, who made his first visit of the general election here Thursday.
Many of the Sun Belt states seemingly within Mr. Biden’s reach resisted the most stringent public-health policies to battle the coronavirus. As a result, states like Arizona, Georgia and Texas faced a powerful wave of infections for much of the summer, setting back efforts to revive commercial activity….

Wide variation, but on balance probably wouldn’t be large enough for Biden to win TX.
Ted Cruz Warns of ‘Bloodbath’ for GOP In Elections
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) warned that Republicans could see “a bloodbath of Watergate proportions” if voters are angry and broke when casting their ballots this year, CNBC reports.
Said Cruz: “If on Election Day, people are angry and they’ve given up hope and they’re depressed, which is what Pelosi and Schumer want them to be, I think it could be a terrible election. I think we could lose the White House and both houses of Congress, that it could be a bloodbath of Watergate proportions.”
All of these Republicans deserve whatever ass thumping is coming their way.
With the exception o Phil Scotr the moderate GOP governor of Vermont I can’t think of a single Republican who doesn’t deserve to be swept out of office in 25 days.
Although most of them won’t complete their current terms until 2022/23, there are other GOP governors who’ve responded to their resp0nsibilities and their constituents’ safety, most notably Charlie Baker in Massachusetts and Larry Hogan in Maryland, but also, to a greater or lesser degree,such GOP Guvs as Ted DeWine in Ohio and Chris Sununu in New Hampshire.
That’s sort of the appeal that old-time Main Street Republicans could once make — fiscal prudence, public safety, impartial justice, clean government, non-partisan expertise, responsive officials and economic success. Regulations are often necessary but should limit their reach to protecting the people.
Theodore Roosevelt and his Republican Congresses essentially started the framework of regulation and guidance (e.g. the Pure Food & Drug Act, the Department of Commerce & Labor, anti-trust), although most of them (including T.R.) would have considered themselves profoundly conservative.
As Fiorello La Guardia, the reforming Republican Mayor of New York, said, “There is no Democratic or Republican way to clean the streets.”
Actually NY has had its share of GOP governors and NYC. has 20 years of Republican mayors….
