The first debate between President Trump and Joseph R. Biden Jr. will begin at 9 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday and run for 90 minutes without commercial interruptions.

The Times will livestream the event, accompanied by analysis and fact-checking from our reporters. The debate will also be carried on channels including ABC, CBS, CNN, C-SPAN, Fox News, MSNBC and NBC.

Chris Wallace, the anchor of “Fox News Sunday,” will moderate the debate. He played that role in one of the 2016 debates between Mr. Trump and Hillary Clinton.

The moderator chooses the debate topics. For Tuesday night, Mr. Wallace chose Mr. Trump’s and Mr. Biden’s records, the Supreme Court, the coronavirus pandemic, the economy, race and violence in cities and the integrity of the election. There will be 15 minutes to discuss each topic….

The moderator of the debate, “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace, last week chose six topics for the 90-minute commercial-free showdown that will be divided into six 15-minute sections devoted to each topic.
The issues include the fierce Supreme Court nomination battle, the worst pandemic to strike the globe in a century, a national economy flattened by coronavirus, the racial justice protests and violence that have flared in cities across the nation, and the integrity of the election. The latter is a crucial issue, considering the president for months has railed against expanded voting by mail, repeatedly charging that it would lead to a “rigged election.”

Anybody who says that either Trump or Biden was “good” stylistically or substantively is a hack.
Biden should have been far more prepared for this. I will try to give him a pass by saying he was just shellshocked by the actual carnage up close. In terms of the election, he is still winning. Then, his problems will get worse.
The view is that Biden had a few misses…

In some ways, Biden did set the template for this by his behavior in the 2012 VP debate. I said at the time how disgraceful he was.
We as a country reap what we sow. Trump took Biden’s behavior in the debate and took it up to a 98.

There’s literally nothing else Wallace can do. Trump believes in debate anarchy. He is the Antifa candidate. Unless you give Wallaec a taser, there’s nothing else he can do.

They will focus test it I am sure. It would be one thing if Biden had a good night. Biden did not have a good night. It is hard to see him being much better in future debates, especially as Trump gets more desperate and feral.
Buttigieg would have done great by comparison in a debate against Trump (not talking about my views on issue positions.) Biden cannot, but does not need to. He is winning. If that does not change, he does not need to debate again and the non-political junkie/non super partisan will THANK him for not subjecting the country to another one of these.
The moment I liked, was when Biden Said my son Bo served proudly and when Trump talked bad about Hunter’s military service he said my son had a drug problem and he worked through it and I am proud of him…that will resonate with parents, especially mother’s….
He actually said “stand back and standby.”
That’s worse than “stand down.”
