Here we go again…
Donald J. Trump goes after a person of colours’ birth in a effort to make his supporters question a candidate…..
It didn’t work with Barack Obama…
It is sure not to work with Kamala Harris…
It will probably help the Biden/Harris ticket raise money and votes….
Though Donald Trump flirted for years with an entrance into politics, it was the election of Barack Obama — and the bogus claim that the first Black president was not born in the United States — that finally brought him into the civic sphere. Over a decade since Trump launched his political career on the back of a racist conspiracy theory, he has revived the claim for the first Black vice-presidential nominee in U.S. history: On Thursday, just two days after Harris was named Joe Biden’s VP pick, Trump suggested that she may not be eligible for the job.
“I heard it today that she doesn’t meet the requirements, and by the way the lawyer who wrote the piece is highly qualified, very talented,” Trump said in his coronavirus press conference. He was referring to a Newsweek column in which conservative law professor John Eastman claimed that Harris may not be considered a natural-born citizen — a requirement for those at the top of the ballot — because of what he calls the original understanding of the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment. As Axios notes, “Eastman’s view on birthright citizenship and presidential eligibility is not accepted by constitutional law scholars.”
Earlier in the day, Trump campaign senior legal adviser Jenna Ellis also presented Eastman’s op-ed as grounds for a birther revival, calling the baseless concern “an open question, and one I think Harris should answer so the American people know for sure she is eligible.”
Democrats anticipated that the Trump campaign — initially launched in 2015 on the claim that Mexicans are “rapists” — would run a campaign steeped in racism if the vice-presidential nominee was a woman of color. According to Politico, during the vetting of Senator Tammy Duckworth, the selection committee was concerned that Republicans would question Duckworth — born in Bangkok to a father who was an American citizen and Defense employee — on her legitimacy as a candidate. (The concerns would also be bogus: Duckworth is legally a natural-born citizen.) But with another Black nominee on the ballot, Trump is returning to his wheelhouse, questioning the citizenship of a candidate born in the United States….

Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California….

And just like with Obama Republicans won’t do shit about their leader claiming. “Black person isn’t REAL American”.

Yup….

I don’t see how anyone, given what Trump and his allies on Fox are saying, and the silence of the Republicans in Congress over these allegations, can deny that their party is once again smearing a person of color for political gain.
It’s “lots of people are saying, I have sent investigators to Hawaii to look for a birth certificate” all over again. They are trying, once again, to make another Democrat of color exotic and foreign.
Not a word from Congressional Republicans about these ridiculous charges and not a word against what Trump is doing to the Post Office to suppress the vote. Wonder why?
Oh, and Ted Cruz was born in Canada to a Cuban father and a mother, who was born in America, but had become a Canadian citizen (since she was voting there at the time). So, since there was no such thing at that time as duel citizenship between Canada and the U.S. at the time, Ted was born to a Canadian mother and a Cuban father on Canadian soil. He can be a Senator, but not President, but he could never become President anyway.
CG says
It should of course be remembered how much Trump focused on this matter when Ted Cruz was his biggest challenge.
Nobody is disputing that Harris was born in America. The issue is just dumb though. Of course she is eligible, she was born here. It matters not that her parents were immigrants, just like Trump’s mother was, as well as the mothers of most of Trump’s kids.
And the claim that is not eligible is exactly the same one I heard nearly 10 years ago from wackos at a Republican Party meeting who said that as much as they liked Marco Rubio, he would never be eligible to be President because of where his *parents* were born.
CG says
Of course Ted Cruz was also eligible, just like John McCain, George Romney, Tammy Duckworth, and others who were born outside of the 50 states, but to at least one American citizen parent.
Zreebs says
Absolutely, CG – without any qualifications. I would never want to see a Cruz presidency, but I will defend his right to seek the presidency.
On a related topic, we need Republicans to proclaim loudly that we need to protect the right to vote, and of course to vote safely. No one should underestimate The danger we are currently in, and Democrats can’t get us out of this danger by ourselves. No one can say they are a supporter Of democracy if we are indifferent to efforts to blatantly suppress the vote.
I get a prescription by mail and it took me three extra days This month to receive it. These games have to stop immediately and without conditions. Everyone should demand it.
Keith says
Respectfully disagree Zreebs, Laurence Tribe will make the case that you either have to be born on U.S. soil or to at least one U.S. parent to be native born. Ted doesn’t qualify.
But anyone who let his wife and father be horribly insulted and then turn around and endorse the bully is too much of a pussy to be President. Doesn’t matter where he’s born.
I would love this issue to come before the Supreme Court. Those same investigators who went to Hawaii (not) could find Ted’s birth certificate in Canada. Then maybe they could find his balls.
Keith says
But I do agree on the Post Office. Unfortunately our elected Republican Representatives are quiet on the subject, as usual. The Pathetic Party.

Good point CG…
Take it from where it comes…
It’s NOT gonna work……

Anyway, when Trump labels anything a “very serious” claim or matter?
You know you are about to hear a lie.
That’s been one of his most famous tactics, labeling conspiracy theories and rubbish such as this as “very serious.”

Come to think of it, Winston S. Churchill’s mother, née Jenny Jerome, was born in the U.S. when it was not part of the British Empire.
I don’t know if she had renounced her U.S. citizenship when she became Lady Randolph Churchill, or when she gave birth to Winston, or indeed ever.

It won’t work against Harris and will juice up Democratic voting ….
