This is a pretty generic GOP speech by Pence – one that will comfort longtime party stalwarts. It’s one reason he proved an effective counterbalance to Trump in 2016.

What I found remarkable (even though I’m not a veteran myself) was how the RNC highlit the military service of Mike Pence’s father and of many of his children or sons-in-law.
Why would you want to emphasize that (like many of us here) you never served? Veterans, military families and those in uniform (all no. 1 targets of any GOP campaign, but especially this one) will hardly be impressed, even if you speak at Fort McHenry. And once reminded that the VP never served, they cannot but remember the military career of the President (which ended at a military high school).
Maybe it was just an incredibly clumsy response to the Beau Biden narrative of last week.
