The US Postal Service is YUGE agency…
(It is also unionised …)
It does something probably no other company on earth can do…
Deliever letters and packages EVERYWHERE in American around the planet at pretty good prices
And it does this as a quasi-public company…
It does NOT get money from your tax dollars but it IS part of the American government…
And it has something else no other company has…
It HAS TO hold pension money for pensions that might never happen…
The House has moved to end this requirement which would bring the angency’s budget problem’s down…But the Republican led Senate has NOT voted on it…
Donald Trump has always had a sore spot for the agency…
He has ranted against the agency giving Amazon discount prices for them giving the agency bulk mailing discounts like everyone else because Amazon is owned by Jeff Bezos the guy who owns The Washington Post which does pieces that the does like…
That is now added to Trump’s efforts to do vote suppression thru slowing the mail-in ballots that could be more than 50% of the Novembers vote …
With a new Postal Boss, who is a Trump political donor/supporter there has been a spot light on efforts to ‘reform’ the agency, which seems to most us as way to slow the movement of the mail by cutting employee overtime, cutting back mail boxes and removing mail sorting machine around the country…Coincidently 80 days before a national election?
The thing is?
Amazon , FedEx and UPS cannot become the private US Mail company…
They simply do Not have the infrastructure to do so….
Why some might think the solution on this is to shrink the Post office out of the package business and push people on line to do their business?
THAT is impractical…
the noise against this will echo mostly against the very politicians that support Trump…
Rural lawmakers…
For their public and those in urban lower class neighbourhoods…
A diminished post office is gonna become economic hardships….
Has Donald Trump managed to fuckup something else?
And give Democrats something else to use to beat him down with voters…
Those most affected by reports of slowdowns in delivery services include veterans, senior citizens and rural residents who have long voted Republican, arming Democratic challengers and incumbents with a salient campaign issue. Democrats are already blanketing the airwaves, latching on to the opportunity to highlight support for an institution that has a 91 percent approval rating, according to an April survey by the Pew Research Center.
“Senator Perdue needs to take a stand on principle for once in his career and demonstrate that his oath to the Constitution and his constituents is more important to him than his allegiance to President Trump and his Political Party,” said Jon Ossoff, who’s running against Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) this cycle. “And if he allows the president to sabotage voting by mail, he will be condemned by history as an accomplice to this attack on our democracy.”
Trump said Thursday that he opposes both $3.6 billion in election aid for states and a $25 billion emergency bailout for the Postal Service because he wants to restrict how many Americans can vote by mail, part of a broader assault on mail-balloting that he has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, would invite widespread fraud. Trump, his family and many top aides, by contrast, have regularly voted by mail themselves.
Democrats uniformly balked at Trump’s move to restrict mail voting during a pandemic, when many Americans fear heading to the polls for fear of catching the novel coronavirus, while most Republicans were silent or offered qualified objections….

It’s like the air got let out of the Kennedy side of things?
Democratic Socialist Dave says
In April & May, Joe Kennedy had the name recognition, but those July-August polls are after he debated Ed Markey, and viewers (or readers & watchers of the local news) had a chance to see Markey side by side with JPK III. The Boston Globe’s relatively-recent endorsement also seems to have helped Ed Markey.
There weren’t many campaign commercials, either, last Spring, but now that (with mail ballots due on Sept. 1) every day is Election Day, they’re all over the news broadcasts and morning shows.
Also for the eight or nine candidates campaigning to succeed Kennedy in his Cambridge-S.E. Mass. district (formerly held by James M. Curley, Tip O’Neill and a couple of other Kennedies). The Globe endorsed Jake Auchincloss, who’s probably related to either the Kennedies or the Bouviers, but it’s really an unpredictable jungle primary.
As I’ve written here before, Joe Kennedy should have kept his old job, which he seemed pretty good at doing.

What an answer!
Sooooo…
There is no evidence that Donald Trump joined Jeff Epstein in raping young girls. There is no evidence he didn’t either!
There is no evidence that Donald Trump specifically directed his hack,Postmaster General to tie up the mails for purposes of voting suppression .There is also no evidence he didn’t?
I would go on but you get the silliness of this type of garbage.
ronnieevan says
Except for a handful of Republican Senators speaking out about changes that are slowing mail delivery, Republicans will not take any steps to reverse or oppose Trump’s actions towards the Post Office. Republicans will speak out against the two acting DHS officials illegally holding their office. Republicans, through their party apparatus, will spend millions on lawsuits to oppose state laws regarding mail-in voting, states’ rights be damned. The Republican party under Trump has made manifest and is now unapologetic about everything it had tried over the many years to, at least, camouflage: maintaining racial and economic disparity, widespread voter suppression, wealth transfer to the top, opposition to policies that over 70% of the population support.

The only optimism we can look to is that Trump’s party is backward looking and decaying and the future will be in the hands of those who embrace very different values. Maybe Trump’s perfect storm of greed, lawlessness, insult, and suppression has been a way to ferret out those in his party who would take umbrage. Apparently, very few.

Some thoughts on “Big Jim” Thompson who died over the weekend.
He was the Governor of IL when I was born and was around long enough for me to remember being in office, but too young to really have had an opinion on him in that job. So, I base this on what I have learned in the years since and read about him now after he has passed away.
I guess it surprises me somewhat that he was as young as he was when took office and still relatively young when he left office. He probably could have been Governor even longer than 14 years but I suppose was tired of the job (IL had a Republican Governor named Jim for 22 straight years.. then after four years of a George, Jim Ryan tried again for the party, but his problem was the last name Ryan.. though no relation to George)
Thompson definitely had higher political ambitions at one point. Reportedly, he signed his HS yearbook for people as “President of the United States 1984-1992″ but must have realized he was not conservative enough on social issues to go national as a Republican. He could have run for some other office but instead went to a law firm and made tons of money.
He was 6’6” tall and a natural campaigner as well as being a genuine Chicago Republican. I do not think there has been anybody since actually from Chicago that has done all that well as a Republican in IL.
His 1982 reelection against Adlai Stevenson III was closer than expected and a big part of that was that African-Americans in Chicago had a massive voter registration drive (to the dismay of Keith and his pals) which would result in the election of Harold Washington as Mayor the next year.
In 1986, he beat Stevenson in a rematch easily, because two LaRouchies won Democrat primaries for statewide office and the party had to officially separate itself from them and run as a different entity.
While Thompson was a Cubs fan, one of his biggest accomplishments was working out a deal in the 1980s to keep the White Sox from moving to Florida.

Loomer pulled in front of a crowded field of Republicans to win the nomination in the heavily blue southeast Florida district at 9:43 p.m. EDT, according to The Associated Press. She will face off against Rep. Lois Frankel (D), who ran unopposed in 2018 and won with more than 60 percent of the vote in 2016.
Loomer becomes the Republican nominee in a district that includes President Trump’s club in Mar-a-Lago. The president and first lady Melania Trump are registered voters in Palm Beach Country, and both voted by mail for Tuesday’s primary…

US House District 21: Lois Frankel vs. Laura Loomer in blockbuster match-up
While Frankel was celebrating her quick win, Loomer was surrounded by an all-star cast of conservative and far-right leaders toasting her win in the GOP primary.
Incumbent Lois Frankel and social media firebrand Laura Loomer won their respective primaries Tuesday, setting the tone for what will be a fiery, nationally-watched congressional election in November.
Frankel, a former West Palm Beach mayor seeking her fifth term in U.S. House District 21, beat newcomer Guido Weiss by a landslide to win the Democratic nomination. Frankel captured 86.77% of the votes to Weiss’ 13.23%.
“Every election night is exciting, no matter how many times you are in it,” Frankel said Tuesday night from her home in West Palm Beach.

A right-wing commentator supported by Trump confidant Roger Stone and far-right radio host Alex Jones defeated five opponents in the Florida Republican primary Tuesday in the congressional district that includes Mar-a-Lago and its notable voters, President Trump and first lady Melania Trump.
Laura Loomer, 27, will face four-term Democratic Rep. Lois Frankel in the November general election. Frankel, who has served in Congress since 2013 and ran unopposed two years ago, easily defeated primary challenger Guido Weiss, a former legislative assistant for Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii). Frankel will be the favorite in the heavily Democratic district that covers a swath of Palm Beach and Broward counties.
Loomer, whose campaign manager, Karen Giorno, was an adviser to Donald Trump’s Florida presidential campaign in 2016, said it’s time to flip the district red, while casting herself as the most “Trumpian” of the six candidates….

The Republican primaries continue to elect Trumpists. Even in those districts or states where the most prominent Trumpist did not win, the primary winner is always someone who modified their views to become more appealing to Trump. A good example is the Kansas GOP Senate primary. Kobach didn’t win, but the eventual winner Marshall had to modify his views To become more appealing to Trump to win.
So even if Trump loses, the GOP will remain in his image – at least for the short term. In the long term, we are all dead.

James, I amend my view that your positions are close to someone like Kasich. I see that you line up with Klobuchar as she also talked about “free stuff”. However, Klobuchar’s support for the Family Act, the paid leave program funded through a payroll tax, and her support for a Carbon Tax both affect the middle class. They are both good programs. Any tax that affects the middle class should be judged on how it is structured, benefits realized and offsets in other areas. For example, national affordable child care would tremendously benefit families who spend an inordinate portion of their income on child care.

The GOP 2020 Convention, unlike most major-party conventions we’ve seen since 1964, isn’t really even pretending to make a case to the entire American electorate.
But this isn’t just aimed at their diehard base.
They’re also making a pitch to people they think might be persuadable: that could be encouraged or terrified enough to vote for Trump-Pence (or discouraged from voting for Biden-Harris).
You don’t need to be a MAGA hat-wearing fanatic to have concerns about violent demonstrations or the cancel-culture or political correctness or losing police protections. (“Defund the Police” needs to join “No Justice No Peace” in some inaccessible archive of hugely self-defeating slogans of the left).
And that’s the overt pitch. What seems to me to have been less subtle or effective in winning persuadables is appeals to subconscious fears and resentments about (e.g.) nationality, identity, race, class, status, faith and culture. The RNC, even in its slicker campaign videos, seems to surrender to the temptation of just swallowing the Trump Myth whole regardless of the doubts and exceptions that many marginal voters might hold — the President’s done a terrific job handling the pandemic; he deserves all kinds of credit (and votes) for an obsolete and now-utterly-irrelevant economic boom; his diplomacy has been a roaring success (especially compared to Obama’s); a Biden-Harris-Pelosi administration (a patsy for China) would be taken over by Antifa, rioting mobs in the streets and by totalitarian Marxist tyrants who aren’t white Anglos (the Squad).
