3 1/2 months out?
Joe Biden seems top solidifying his lead with registers voters… if the polls are correct…
THAT is good for the Biden people…
But we need to see the numbers for LIKELY voters….
The July 15-21 poll found that 46% of registered voters said they would back Biden in the Nov. 3 election, while 38% would vote for Republican Trump. The remaining 16% are either undecided, plan to support a third-party candidate or may not vote.
Both Biden and Trump campaigns have focused much of their time on reaching out to this third group of potentially persuadable voters, which could swing a close election in either direction.
Reuters/Ipsos polling in 2016 found that support was evenly split that summer between Trump and then Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton among registered voters who had not backed a major party candidate. On Election Day, Trump won a majority of voters who said they decided in the final week.
This year, the poll found that 61% of undecided or third-party registered voters said they would support Biden if they had to choose, while 39% would vote for Trump.
Seventy percent of undecided or third-party registered voters say they disapprove of Trump’s performance in office and the same number said they think the country is headed on the wrong track. And 62% said they thought the U.S. economy was headed in the wrong direction.
This group also appears to be deeply concerned about the novel coronavirus, which has killed more than 141,000 Americans and forced millions out of work as businesses closed in an effort to slow the spread of the virus….

Biden today said that Trump is America’s “first racist President.”
He may not have a very good perspective of history.
CG says
He also said no racist had ever succeeded in being elected before Trump. “No Democrat” and “No Republican.”
Interesting statement.
He specifically went after Trump for using the term “China virus.” I agree totally that Trump should not be insulting Asians in such a way. However, I think FDR actually locking up innocent Asian-Americans was actually a bigger act of racism.
Maybe Noam Chomsky or Harold Zinn or someone needs to sit down with Joe.

Actually this is great. When Republicans shoot back with their “but what about the other racists elected President 100+ years ago” they kind of prove Biden’s main point.
CG says
Just imagine though if Mitt Romney had said in 2012, “America has never elected a racist President.”
Biden says some really, really dumb stuff. He will continue to do that if he is President.
If we are to be honest, by the standards we hold in 2020, just about everyone who would have been an adult before the Civil Rights Movement was probably at least a little bit racist. We have had some horrific racists as President as well, such as Woodrow Wilson, who made racism and turning back the clock on progress a hallmark of his Administration. The great thing about America is that we are constantly raising our standards, in order to become a more perfect Union.

I largely agree with CG’s post.
One minor difference is the that I would argue we are probably all Racist in some way that we don’t quite realize – even if we strive not to be.

I agree.

True THAT Z….

I agree CG…..
There have been others
But Biden evidently meant NOW
CG says
Not according to the actual words he used.
CG says
but Trump supporters always try to say “what Trump really meant” too, so you are in their tradition

DJ JUDD
@DJJUDD
Responding to remarks from Joe Biden calling him America’s first racist elected president, Donald Trump says, “I’ve said this, and I say it openly, and not a lot of people dispute it, I’ve done more for Black Americans than anybody with the possible exception of Abraham Lincoln.”
CG says
The new Trump supporter line is that the polls are all wrong because there is a “shy Trump vote” that is being massively unrepresented in these surveys. People are afraid to admit they are Trump supporters because they will be fired from their jobs or otherwise attacked in some way.
For one thing, why would someone be afraid to tell an automated poll?
The polls were largely correct in 2016 (when most of us thought they were overrepresenting Trump’s support) and they were pretty much correct in 2018 and there is no reason to believe they are not fairly accurate now as a snapshot in time
Scott will be happy to know that I believe the polls that show large numbers for “other” are present company excluded largely made up of people who will not vote at all or who will be most inclined to vote for Biden. The polls that have a healthy “other” numbers are the ones with the closest margins between Biden and Trump. The “other” vote will be low, but that doesn’t mean there is not a market for it.
CG says
So, between all the shy Trump voters who are afraid to tell the truth to pollsters, robot or otherwise, and those in Florida who are anything but shy but proud to let their Trump Freak Flags fly on their boats, he has to be winning by a solid margin. It’s a tremendous, tremendous thing.

Listen to the 538 podcast. They address the “shy Trump” vote and pretty much conclude it doesn’t exist.
The reasoning made sense to me. If it did exist there would be a hidden Trump vote in blue states where most Trump voters have Democratic friends , neighbors, and bosses and be less pronounced in red states where the opposite would be true.
In 2016 Trump didn’t overperform his polls in blue states. He actually performed worse than the polls indicated in CA and most of the Northeast.
Give the podcast a listen. It’s good.
