Maybe?
1.9 million people filed for unemployment benefits last month bringing to total number to over 40 million since the virus restrictions kicked in and closed the country’s economy down…
Experts thing there is 30 million people actually receiving the money from their state…
Economists caution that even though some people are going back to work as states open things up?
The economy is carrying a LARGE amount of people not working but getting paid by the government emptying its tax money that has also shrunk…
The Federal, State and local government budgets ARE gonna have holes in them and they may have to lay people off or furlough people adding to the jobless number when the economy is struggling to get back…
Caution…
None of this reflects the effects of the two weeks of protests in the streets…
“Whatever optimism there is from seeing some people return to work, we’re not seeing a drastic move off unemployment,” said Jay Shambaugh, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. “If anything we’re seeing a stable number of people on unemployment. Last year it was around 1.5 million.”
Including the new supplemental funds for gig workers, about 30 million people are currently receiving unemployment benefits.
As states have lifted some of their most severe restrictions in recent weeks, more businesses have reopened — at least partially — and brought back workers. But there is still no sense of when commerce will resume at the scale it existed at late last year, or whether there will be a second wave of the virus in the fall and winter. This could create an economy that is trapped in between both realities, putting pressure on companies that might not be able to survive at half capacity and wreaking havoc on state and local budgets that could lead to more layoffs later this year.
The unemployment rate for May, due out Friday, is expected to be close to 20 percent, a level not seen since the 1930s. The Congressional Budget Office released projections this week showing that it doesn’t expect the United States to recover fully from the crisis until 2030.
But the upswing, however small, is encouraging, economists said.
“It’s a sign that things are not getting as worse as they were before,” said Nick Bunker, the economic research director at Indeed Hiring Lab. “We have seen a reduction in the pace of people becoming jobless. So that’s positive. But we’re still seeing claims at astronomical levels than what we saw before this crisis.”
The weekly numbers aren’t the only positive signs in the economy. Mortgage applications have surged in recent weeksamid record low interest rates. Consumption of oil and petroleum products is up. The number of travelers at airports, as measured by TSA precheck numbers, has begun increasing in recent weeks. Even restaurant reservations have inched up.
The Federal Reserve, too, has scaled back its purchases of government bonds, a vote of confidence that the worst is likely to be over….

Scary stuff. He is going to where the Tulsa race massacre of 1921 took place. On June 1st was the sad anniversary. Trump and his party are going full apartheid. Trump Thanks ‘S.S.’ for Protecting White House</strong>
President Trump on Twitter:
Our great National Guard Troops who took care of the area around the White House could hardly believe how easy it was. “A walk in the park”, one said. The protesters, agitators, anarchists (ANTIFA), and others, were handled VERY easily by the Guard, D.C. Police, & S.S. GREAT JOB!
Of course, the SS were Adolf Hitler’s personal bodyguards and later became one of the most powerful and feared organizations in all of Nazi Germany.
The Secret Service actually uses the acronym USSS.

Bush will vote for Trump. George P. Bush–Texas Land Commissioner and son of Jeb Bush that is.
I wonder if that means CG will never support him for higher office?
CG says
He did in 2016 too and never said otherwise in terms of this cycle. All these Republican politicians in states like that finding themselves held hostage in such a way. Of course that does not make it right. I don’t vote in Texas. Any statewide primary he will face in Texas, at least for now, his opposition will come from someone more pro-Trump and who will attack him as being part of the “Bush Dynasty.”
CG says
By 2022, the party may be done with Trump and George P. will join all the others in issuing remorseful “mea culpa” statements.
CG says
In the privacy of the voting booth, I would think it is very possible he does not actually vote for Trump, but of course feels like he has to support him publicly for political considerations.
Scott P says
You still haven’t answered the question if you’d vote for him in a GOP Presidential primary
CG says
Is he running for President? What year is it? Who is he running against? What is he running on?
Let’s deal with the here and now first. Personally, I doubt another Bush will be running for President in my lifetime.
Scott P says
Well the track record of Bushes running for President is pretty high.
But say he doesn’t.
You could just as easily say you won’t support anyone in the future who supports Trump for President now.
How hard is that?
CG says
I don’t think you would even be able to say that.
What if someone in the future who is a Trump supporter now moves on from that and becomes a liberal Democrat in the future and seeks the Presidency, (Sort of like how Reagan and Warren switched parties long before running for President) You would not rule them completely rule them out because of that. After all, you voted for Bob Dole.
Scott P says
Well if a Trump 2020 supporter became a liberal Democrat in 4, 8, 12, etc years they obviously renounced everything Trump stood for to find themselves in that boat.
A Republican who steadfastly defended and supported Trump in 2020 *might* renounce all of his statements and policy positions in 2028, 2032, etc.
Then again he or she probably will not.
Apples and oranges.
CG says
I’ve already “supported” a regretful former Trump supporter in a Presidential primary… Joe Walsh.
jack is the one who voted in a statewide general election for unapologetic red hat wearing Trump supporters. I do not recall that bothering you at all.
Scott P says
I wouldn’t have done what Jack did. Then again I don’t recall Jack saying he was proud of that vote or that it even stood for anything other than “better than the alternative”.
We have yet to see how many Republicans are actually apologetic about supporting Trump in 2016 and 2020 or whether being so is any kind of plus in a GOP primary.
It certainly wasn’t for Walsh this year.
Scott P says

SEN. CORY GARDNER (R-Colo.) declined to look at the tweet because he was worried about getting to the Senate floor for an outdoors bill, BURGESS reports.
SEN. JOHN THUNE — the No. 2 Senate Republican from South Dakota — said, “Well, I mean it’s a, it’s a, it’s a serious accusation, which should only be made with facts and evidence. And I haven’t seen any yet.” (h/t to the Hill pool on this quote)
CORNYN — up for reelection in Texas — said he wouldn’t comment on the tweet.

The Hill….
President Trump on Tuesday shared an unfounded conspiracy theory that an incident in which an elderly man was pushed to the ground by police in Buffalo, N.Y., during a protest over the police killing of George Floyd could be a “set up.”
The president cited right-wing One America News Network (OANN) in making the incendiary claim, which comes amid a national debate over police brutality.
“Buffalo protester shoved by Police could be an ANTIFA provocateur. 75 year old Martin Gugino was pushed away after appearing to scan police communications in order to black out the equipment,” Trump tweeted, appearing to refer to a report on OANN.

Trump’s tweet Tuesday morning attacking a 75-year old protester in Buffalo — who was shoved by the police and bled from his head after falling — stunned some in a caucus that’s grown used to the president’s active Twitter feed. “Why would you fan the flames?” she said of the president’s tweet. “That’s all I’m going to say.”

The idea that gay marriage has achieved acceptability in the Republican Party took a decided hit yesterday.
Denver Riggleman ,a conservative Republican Congressman from Virginia, was denied renomination after being criticized for presiding at a gay marriage.
While Republicans have seemingly acquiesced to gay marriage after the Supreme Court ruling upholding the practice, there have remained rumblings among the extreme Right Wingers and assorted self described “evangelical Christians” over the issue.
Denying renomination to a conservative Congressman over it though thrusts the issue back into the spotlight and may bring the it back up as a source of contention particularly among the religious right.
jamesb says
Trump would say those aren’t supporters
What will the Log Cabin Republicans say?
My Name Is Jack says
In my view the gay marriage issue has never been “settled” within the Right Wing ranks of the Republican Party, particularly among the evangelicals.
It’s been sort of simmering with an attitude of “we just wont talk about it.”
However, as this event shows, it’s still there .
jamesb says
And will gay Republican’s vote against their own interests ?
Like some ON Obamacare voting AGAINSTDemocrats?
CG says
Riggleman was a somewhat surprising nominee two years ago when the seat opened up unexpectedly and then he only won in November (despite being tied to Bigfoot erotica) because the Democrat was considered an extremist. Small nominating conventions are more likely to produce results like this. In a normal primary, he likely would have won again.
CG says
What I am saying is that may not be the only issue that Evangelicals had an issue with him on.
They may not have liked that he was in the alcohol distillery business or believed he was a secret Sasquatchsexual.
jamesb says
Bad candidates ARE BAD candidates
Sometimes reporters don’t acknowledge that…
Outsiders wouldn’t know
My Name Is Jack says
Why was Riggleman a “bad” candidate?
Because he married a gay couple?
CG says
More of an unorthodox candidate who was a surprise nominee the last time when the incumbent quit after being nominated and a replacement was needed and then originally considered an underdog to the Democrat, before bad stuff came out about her.
There were less than 3,000 people that supposedly voted in this convention and Riggleman is claiming fraud.
My Name Is Jack says
I think I will depend on the media outlets who covered this race .
All of which highlight the gay marriage issue as causing a backlash against Riggleman and as the catalyst for the challenge and his ultimate defeat, rather than the “analysis” here.
Keith says
Of course Jack, all the whataboutism aside, the Congressman was a marked man the minute he accepted two people (friends who volunteered in his campaign) request to perform their marriage ceremony. The fact that they happened to be two men appeared to outrage the right wing base of the Republican Party. I am sure the married couple were proud and happy to have the Congressman participate on their happy day. Not sure why anyone would wonder why he would perform marriages, politicians do it all the time. But, one look at the Republican Platform for this year (the same as last time) will tell you exactly how anti-gay the Party has always been.
jamesb says
Any will continue to be, eh?
CG says
Why is a Congressman legally allowed to officiate any marriage? Many of them should focus on their own.
CG says
Looking into this a bit, it seems far more unlikely than not that a Congressman can perform a legally valid marriage ceremony. It apparently differs from locale to locale. I have heard of a Mayor performing weddings but never a Congressman or Senator.
Of course, anybody can go online and pay a fee to become an “ordained minister” which then allows them to perform marriages. That is probably what happened in this case.
In any event, it should be remembered that Riggleman had Trump’s “total and complete” endorsement in this campaign and he still lost a Republican nomination contest. Let’s keep in mind that such a thing is possible then.
jamesb says
Been saying THAT for a while….
Been saying the ‘juice’ for Trump IS slipping away….
Little by Little….
jamesb says
For voters out there Jack?
Apparently so….
jamesb says
“Rep. Denver Riggleman (R-VA), who became a target of conservatives after officiating a same-sex wedding last year, was ousted Saturday by GOP voters in a drive-thru district convention,” Politico reports.
“Convention-goers picked Bob Good, a former county supervisor who ran to Riggleman’s right, especially on social issues, to be the party’s nominee in the general election.”
Politicalwire…
Keith says
Once again Jack is more than right. The Republicans still cannot give up their homophobia, no matter how kinky Lady G gets.
Nope, let a Member of Congress perform a marriage ceremony between two men and it Trumps Trump.
Homophobia still rules the Republican Party. But the up side, the Republican Party will now lose another House seat. 😆
Democratic Socialist Dave says
I hardly think that same-sex marriage is a settled issue not only among evangelicals but among conservative or orthodox Roman Catholics, Jews and Muslims, groups that are also anti-choice/pro-life.
The cross-cleavage of class, ethnicity and religion would be particular sharp among observant, conservative Hispanic and Asian Catholics.
