The piece by Perry Bacon Jr. give a very interesting take…
Which is?
Kamala Harris is just about NOT being Elizabeth Warren in the politics of the push and pull going on….
It come’s down to the Progressive’s vs the rest of the Democratic Party thing that HAS been going on for the last 4 years and seems to NOT be subsiding….
People who want Sen. Kamala Harris or another Black woman to be former Vice President Joe Biden’s running mate often claim that a Black woman will substantially boost enthusiasm among Black voters. Supporters of Sen. Elizabeth Warren for vice presidential nominee say that she will help Biden solidify support with younger voters and people who supported Sen. Bernie Sanders during the Democratic primaries. Others say Harris or Warren or other candidates will doom Biden with voting bloc X or fail to help him with group Z.
Almost every case for or against a particular vice presidential candidate comes with an electoral argument. But most of these electoral claims are highly contestable, at best. It’s not that they should be dismissed out of hand. They matter. But as people in the Democratic Party advance their preferred candidates, they’re also doing a bit of hiding the ball. Electoral claims — “Person X will help win Michigan” — are often seen as objective and fact-based, even when they’re flimsy. But there are more obvious, non-electoral, cases for running mates that tend not to be voiced outright.
So let’s unpack some of the pitches being made for vice presidential nominees and what might actually be motivating them….

The other day, someone mentioned on here that Jim Clyburn will play or should play a big part in Biden’s decision.
Reportedly, the person Clyburn has said he favors is California Congresswoman Karen Bass.
jamesb says
You just read that Bass got added to the list as the DNC person…
We’ll see…
Personally I think this was a pat on the back thing for a good job…
What do you and anybody else think about the this 538 piece?
CG says
I don’t think Bass will get picked, but she is the CBC Chair and whom Clyburn apparently says he favors. It would not be a good pick.
I believe I mentioned both Val Demings and Keshia Lance Bottoms months ago as possibilities, before anyone here at least thought of them.
I don’t have a say in it, but among the names mentioned, I hope he goes with Demings.
CG says
It’s interesting though that her name is Karen and “Karen” has over the past few months become the newest millennial insult designed specifically to demean white women.
jamesb says
He won’t I don’t think…
She was cop for more than 25 years….
No national political experience ….
CG says
Nobody has “national political experience” then unless you count Harris’s failed Presidential run which steeply failed to meet any sort of expectation… or Warren who also failed as a Presidential candidate and came in third in her home state.
Being a cop for 25 years is a good thing. (No problems with here record from what I know.) It might help Biden get more Republican or moderate votes.
If there might be an issue, it is that her husband is also a politician, (and also a former cop), and his record would be scrutinized too.
CG says
Could Jerry Demings serve at the same time as Mayor of Orange County Florida and also Second Gentlemen? (or would it be First, since Biden is married to a woman?)
jamesb says
Warren and Harris do…..
Being a cop for 25 years isn’t gonna go down good for Demings I’m gonna stick with….
CG says
That would be a sad commentary for your party then. I would think an African-American woman who rose to the top of the leadership of her city’s police before running for office would be a good thing.
You are saying Democrats do not.
jamesb says
CG?
While the protests are drawing down….
They ARE against the police….
