ANYBODY surprised with this?
Not me….
I’ve been saying this for months….
Donald Trump , desperate for SOMETHING positive is pushing regulators hard to come out with a vaccine to save HIS job, NOT people’s lives….
He’s already hinted about a ‘October Surprise”
In a meeting last month with Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar — who is overseeing the effort called Operation Warp Speed, along with Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper — Trump pushed Azar repeatedly to speed up the already unprecedented timeline, according to two senior White House officials familiar with the meeting who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations. Trump wants some people to be able to get the vaccine sooner than the end of the year to demonstrate that an end to the pandemic is within reach, according to those officials and two others.
Trump is hardly the only world leader racing to deliver a vaccine as a way to save lives, get people back to work and fully reopen the economy. But some scientists and even several people close to the White House worry that his fixation on the timeline, combined with his past dismissal of scientists’ recommendations, could put regulators under intense pressure to approve some sort of limited use of a vaccine before it has been adequately vetted for safety and effectiveness.
Some go so far as to raise concerns about an “October surprise” in which the administration issues an emergency authorization for a vaccine right before the Nov. 3 election, regardless of whether the research justifies it…..

So?
I mean Trump can say anything he wants I guess.
What’s new?
There’s a lot more to this though than him “announcing “ a new vaccine.
Companies who develop vaccines are not going to go along with introducing one until they are reasonably sure that it will work and have manageable side effects.
They are the ones who are on the spot if it doesn’t or causes damages to people.
That’s a lawyers dream.
If an ineffective vaccine be his “October surprise?”
Let him have it!

Actually the vaccines are already being tested on the public….
Some companies are worried they won’t have enough people to run the tests on and will move some of their testing to Brazil and China….
My Name Is Jack says
Sure they are.
They have to.Vaccines have to be tested on live subjects.Ive read where there are about a hundred or so in various stages.
So?
Has nothing to do with Trump.
jamesb says
Of course it does Jack….
We’ll see when he gets up and says the vaccine IS HERE already….
I promise I won’t say ‘I told ya so’…..
My Name Is Jack says
Oh you “told us” back in April that there would be a vaccine in “mid summer.”
Nobody here pays attention to your silly “told ya so” routine.
Besides you don’t even understand what I was saying.
My point was that Trump “announcing “ a vaccine is meaningless unless it is effective and safe;otherwise ,no company ,due to liability concerns ,will want to place their vaccine on the market.
His “announcement “ would be superfluous.
Now if it is effective and safe? Then that would be a different story.

I think the bigger point is that, Trump will claim victory on getting a vaccine when he had very little to do with it…less than nothing…and that is what riles folks up here…
Jack to your point that companies want to make sure they have a safe and effective vaccines, normally I would agree with you, but wit the timeline they are pushing and they corners that are being cut and the speed at which things are being done, I don’t think they will care too much about the usual way of business and they will have the Government to back them up…and remember, if the vaccine is approved on an “emergency basis in October” by the November election you won’t have the proof if it works and it is safe…that won’t come out until 300 plus million Americans get the vaccine and billions around the world and then it will be something Donald Trump Peddled and that is honestly scary…the true snake oiler dealer giving the American people the okay to get a vaccine, that worries me…

And there IS the $$$ part to add….

That is the underlying issue,…about three weeks ago Moderna said they were successful in phase one, before full results were out and their stock went up like gang busters and they issued new shares the same day…Every company sees what will happen to their share price if they announce they have a clinically proven vaccine (clinically without probably all the usual rigor of testing…will be a profit goldmine…plus if the vaccine is something that needs to be done yearly like the flu, well then that is money on another a level.
