President Trump threatened Wednesday to “hold up” federal funding to Michigan if the state proceeds with a plan to send absentee ballot applications to all of its 7.7 million voters in a bid to mitigate the risks of in-person voting in the state’s primary and general election this year.
Trump did not specify which funds he might withhold, and he has not always followed through with similar threats.
His message — delivered in a morning tweet — comes as many states grapple with how to safely proceed with elections. Amid the pandemic, Trump has repeatedly railed against mail-in voting, claiming it is subject to fraud and has hurt Republicans in previous elections.
Trump made a similar threat in a second tweet Wednesday directed at Nevada, which is using an all-mail system for its primary election in June. Trump claimed that has created “a great Voter Fraud scenario for the State.”
On Tuesday, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) announced all of Michigan’s registered voters would be mailed absentee ballot applications for the state’s primaries in August and general election in November.
“Breaking: Michigan sends absentee ballots to 7.7 million people ahead of Primaries and the General Election,” Trump wrote in his tweet, incorrectly describing the move to send applications for ballots. “This was done illegally and without authorization by a rogue Secretary of State. I will ask to hold up funding to Michigan if they want to go down this Voter Fraud path!”
Trump tagged the Treasury Department among others in his tweet.
“By mailing applications, we have ensured that no Michigander has to choose between their health and their right to vote,” Benson said in announcing the decision on Tuesday.
Trump’s threat comes as Michigan responds to unprecedented flooding after a pair of dams in Midland County collapsed following record rainfall….

Oregon Republicans on Tuesday elected a Senate nominee who believes in QAnon, the baseless conspiracy theory that has taken root among some far-right supporters of President Trump.
Jo Rae Perkins bested three other candidates to win the GOP nomination to face Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) in November.

Trump may be beyond help in Michigan. He only won the state by 10,000 votes in 2016.
If it is off the table he can still win if WI and PA stay red, PA looks unlikely to vote GOP again so it would come down to WI, which I still think of as a toss up. But AZ is increasingly looking like a Biden pickup. If AZ goes blue Trump loses even if he keeps WI.
And we haven’t even talked about FL NC or GA.
As for Clinton states Trump could pick up? Well he claimed yesterday he eould pick off VA. But with polls showing Biden leading there by 13-15 pts seems highl7 ally highly unlikely.
