First it was ‘soon’….
Then it was July….
Now it seems to be the begging of August…
This while we watch the media stay to sell different women for the choice and one outwardly runs for it….
Joe Biden announced at a fundraiser Wednesday evening that he hopes to name his running mate around August 1.
Previously, the presumptive nominee had said only that he hopes the vetting process for his vice presidential pick will be done by July.
jamesb says
Biden VP stakes update…..
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) said Thursday that she’s not interested in serving as running mate to presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden, the AP reports….
Politicalwire…
…
George Floyd’s death in police custody is renewing criticism of Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s (D-MN) prosecutorial record, The Week reports.
“Before she became a senator and a top contender for former Vice President Joe Biden’s vice presidential spot, Klobuchar spent eight years as the Hennepin County attorney, in charge of prosecution for Minneapolis. And while in that position, Klobuchar declined to prosecute multiple police officers cited for excessive force, including the officer who kneeled on Floyd’s neck as he protested.”….
Politicalwire…
CG says
Put all your money on Kamala Harris. (though she will be attacked on the left for having been a prosecutor too.) It’s probably close to a done deal. Biden putting his foot in his mouth a week ago followed by the horrific developments of this week are going to basically leave him no choice but to pick an African-American.
I don’t think the higher ups in the party want any part of Stacy Abrams, and the only other option would be Val Demings, but she was literally a cop.
CG says
Klobuchar would probably have netted the most votes overall (not that the pick might even matter that much this time), but with this unrest literally happening in her backyard, and everyone for now very angry at the person who holds the job as County Attorney she once held, it’s probably over for her.
For those rooting for her, it’s probably how I felt when John McCain forgot how many houses he had and people got upset and he couldn’t pick Mitt Romney because he was too rich too, and wound up with Palin.
CG says
And I bet Oprah has changed her phone number so Biden can’t reach her…
CG says
The Trumpist fan spin on the horrible death of George Floyd is something to behold.
They agree he was a victim, but blame it on “blue state shutdowns.”
So, apparently Mr. Floyd was a bouncer at a bar before Covid so he lost his job due to a shutdown, which left him unemployed and desperate, so he was attempting a forgery at a store or might have been under the influence of something, all because Democrat Governors are shutting down bars and nightclubs.
Scott P says
Well that’s pretty stupid. As is all “Trumpist spin”–aka Republican talking points.
jamesb says
Oprah wants NOTHING to do with any of this…
She would open herself to extensive media review which would find problems like any business person would have…
Trump is enough…
Bloomberg was enough…
Stick to the politicians ...
They know the drill…
jamesb says
She has called for the prosecution of the officers involved….
Just like everyone else….
Including Harris…
Both have been on both sides of the law in police cases…
jamesb says
My money still on Klobuchar….
Harris will get push back I’d think ….
I do NOT think Biden needs more black support…
I DO think he needs in road to Wisconsin, Minnesota , Pennsylvania and maybe Ohio….
Harris doesn’t do it for those states…
Klobuchar would be a better chance…
CG says
The guy who killed George Floyd…
She declined to prosecute him in the past for excessive force.
You really can’t be this stubborn, can you?
jamesb says
We’ll see how this plays….
Again?
Both Warren and Sanders LOST…
Efforts to put them back to me and a LOT of Democrats is ill advised….
CG says
I didn’t say he would pick Sanders or Warren. I think he will pick Harris. Do you lump them all in together? Is there one solitary issue that Biden ran on in 2020 that put him to the right of Harris?
The fact of the matter is that there are a lot of internal pressure on Biden to pick someone to placate a base in the party. If he does not pick an African-American at this point, that would then become the big story and distraction. He said he will pick a woman so he has to do that. I do not know who else might be an option. Harris will be attacked for being a prosecutor, but Val Demings for instance was actually a police officer, and that’s not something that the party would want to be a focus.
jamesb says
Sanders is NOT an option….No…
I think Warren is Sanders 2.0….
Yea…
I lump Warren and Sanders together…
They are to the left of the middle much more than. Biden who has moved somewhat to the left middle…
I know it’s boring but I do NOT think the sweet spot for Biden in November is the Democratic left…
First?
Young Democrats don’t vote in the numbers older ones do…
Young black s do NOT vote in the numbers older blacks do…
Look at the primaries…
The Democratic base is actually older and more in the centre…
Biden HAS to go thru with a women choice…
That’s a given…
I repeat again…
Joe Biden do0es NOT Harris or another black woman on the ticket …
I think he needs someone too get him some of those indie and moderate suburban women voters that came to the party BIG TIME in 2018…
Joe Biden needs Mich, OH, Pa, Fla, and Az and maybe even Ohio…
Those state are NOT about a black VP…
In the end?
Biden also needs someone that can step in and become President form day one…
Someone who will be able to run with o=r for him in 2024….
No rookies are gonna be right…
Joe R. Biden has tough one ahead of him…
I think it’s gonna come down to who he can trust and feel comfortable with…
THAT is NOT Elizabeth Warren ….
I think its Klobuchar…
No matter who the pick is?
Yea…
Somebody IS gonna be unhappy…
Yes indeed….
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Losers very, very often get the Vice-Presidential nomination, for example, Joe Biden himself. (Also Geo.H.W. Bush). Winners want to keep their party united and cushion the inevitable disappointment of the loser’s supporters.
And you can hardly deny that both Sanders and Warren had large followings.
CG says
I would have said Klobuchar was the frontrunner before the events in Minneapolis on the heels of Biden’s completely dumb “you ain’t black” gaffe.
jamesb says
Biden’s comments are gone and had NO effect on the back vote….
There was more noise from white media types then. blacks themselves…
Biden was wrong to say what he said…
But?
He WAS RIGHT….
bdog says
I agree James he was Right, but that is Biden’s biggest Problem, you let your surrogates and your supporters say that, not you…
To use a Dave Chappelle character, if I (a white guy) was running in a largely African American district against Tyrone Biggums (the black KKK guy) and I pointed out to my supporters that you ain’t really black if you vote for this guy…it would be true, but that’s not what I should say…that’s what all the people around me should be saying, but not the guy on top…I can say this guys ideology is whacked and he is a racist, etc…but not say thing thing I am really trying to say in a blunt form…
jamesb says
The comment from Biden isn’t gonna cost one vote…
He will carry the black vote….
He will be more careful…
He’ll be out with reaction comment so on the unrest later today…
Klobuchar and Harris have already made comments against the 4 cops actions in Minn…
Now we see the protest aftermath…
ronnieevan says
I think the VP has to be someone who can get the turn out.
jamesb says
I agree RE…
Turnout I’m looking for in the swing states and Rust bely…
Klobuchar comes from where the turnout is needed…
The actions in Minneapolis isn’t helping the black vote at ALL…
jamesb says
No I can’t DSD…
Sanders and Warren did have good followings…
That’s Right…
CG says
Repeating once again james, that if for nothing else but default (and of course perhaps she may have been the choice regardless), it’s looking very much like it will be Kamala Harris.
CG says
Harris is not going to cost Biden any states. If anybody will lose the election for Biden, it will be Biden himself.
You seem to be forgetting that Harris and Warren (and maybe Sanders too) are actually different people.
The states you mentioned (besides AZ) all went twice to Obama at the top of the ticket. Just because you are on an Amy Klobuchar kick, you are now going to suggest that he would not pick Harris because of racism in those states?
jamesb says
No….
I would say that to be frank?
Klobuchar WILL work better in the states I point to….
Is race a part of this?….
Certainly…
Biden HAS the black vote…
He will have Obama as his wing man…
He does NOT REALLY need Harris in my mind…
My point IS they went for Obama AND Biden…
Damn REAL…
CG says
After his comment and after Minnesota and after Georgia and after that Central Park thing and all the focus that will be on all of that this summer, if he does not pick a black running-mate, that becomes the entire narrative and completely overshadows any “bounce” he would hope to get.
Whether you believe it or not, there are black Democrats saying that the black vote for Biden will not materialize the way he needs it to if he does not pick a black running mate. The way things run in your party, there will be a lot of very offended people if he does not. Since the fundamentals of the election favor him, he ought to not take any needless risks.
jamesb says
I do Not believe that Joe Biden will lose one vote from any of the things u just said CG…
Not one….
CG says
You contradict yourself within a matter of moments.
True, since he is running against Trump, Biden could also literally shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and not lose a lot of votes, but it is also the case that if he does not pick a black running-mate, some voters will stay home, as they are threatening.
CG says
It was a dumb comment that hurt his image among all voters, but yes, people often have short memories.
It did give African-American activists in the party a rationale for now applying greater pressure on him to pick a black running mate.
jamesb says
True THAT CG…
But again?
I hate to say it but a lot of Hip Hop people ain’t gonna vote….
CG says
Well if you agree that might happen, then Biden really has no choice in terms of picking a black running-mate.
It certainly would create a huge firestorm if he picks the very white woman who declined to prosecute the very cop who would one day kill George Floyd.
Does the Biden campaign really want to hear “He would be alive today if not for Amy Klobuchar…?” , As unfair as that of course might be, it would be said.. probably by Trump daily.
jamesb says
I disagree again CG….
Even Clyburn who Biden owes says he’d like a black women on the ticket….
BUT?
He’s fine if it isn’t one….
CG says
Well of course, he’s a Congressman.
CG says
The black Democrats over 80 or approaching 80 will vote for him, either in person or by mail.
What about the voters 18-30 though? You guys need them more to turn out. You can’t give them a distraction or a reason to not vote for Biden (and Scott I am talking about left-wing voters, not a dedicated principled life-long conservative like me, so it’s not the same thing), It might already be quite a challenge to teach them how the Postal System works in regards to their ballots.
jamesb says
Biden has the support of black and most Democrats over 45 years of Aga CG….
And this election like most will be voting AGAINST the other guy , not FOR ur guy….
AGAIN?????
There wasn’t enough left wing voters to beat Biden HTF are they gonna beat Trump?
Really CG….
I see the same argument from left wing pundits everyday…
It doesn’t make ANY SENSE….
CG says
That’s your side though and that is how things are working (and of course the “right” has its own issues too these days), so your focus should be on them.
As a political observer, all I have said here is that circumstances are now pointing heavily towards Harris being picked by Biden to join the ticket.
jamesb says
I DID think Harris and she is one of the finalists I agree….
CG says
So, you are saying if he doesn’t pick Klobuchar, Biden might become the first Democrat to lose the state since McGovern in 1972?
jamesb says
No….
I’m just thinking that the ‘swing states’ ARE where Biden technically needs the EV’s….
The overall vote run up in safe Democratic state don’t mean shit…
CG says
The swing states are Biden’s problem (or opportunity) there is nobody from an actual swing state. Maybe he goes outside the box and picks the Mayor of Atlanta and tries to win Georgia that way, but that would be somewhat unlikely.
CG says
and the best bet for a “swing state” would be Governor Whitmer, but she is not black and Biden has put himself in a corner on that
jamesb says
Whitmer is a nonstarter….
jamesb says
Warren isn’t gonna help Biden one bit in a rust belt or swing state…
Sure she’ll help in a Blue state with progressives…
But CG?
I suspect u KNOW this…
Neither of the ‘progressives’ could post big wins after they got out of small mostly white educated voters states…
Come ON!….
This is just a push for feel good lefties who ain’t even thinking about Trump…
They just want the Sanders agenda…
I’m fucked tired of this longing for lefty ‘free’ stuff that even a Democratic majority is NOT gonna vote for…
I’m annoyed at progressives who threaten to vote for Trump instead of helping the guy who would give ya the best chance of listening and maybe getting something…
I see no reason to follow a guy who wants to tear down the current system like Trump to create a new system that will tax me to give others ‘free’ stuff….
Fix what we have first…
Then work for equality of the working class…
Try and work within the system with those in the opposition to find comprise the think the American political system WAS designed to do….
Do what is possible…
Simple…
THAT IS Joe Biden….
He just needs help….
Not someone trying to get a dream that simple,y won’t work with what we have….
All this does NOT mean that Biden should turn his back Sanders/Warren…
But?
As we see with Hillary/Trump….
Ya gotta get there to effect change…
Losing ain’t worth shit….
CG says
Who has said he is going to pick Warren?
I said Harris.
They look nothing alike.
CG says
If you are effin tired of all that now, you aren’t going to enjoy the theoretical Biden Presidency very much.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
A former police officer might, however, be just the sort of thing to appeals to more conservative voters.
As a progressive in Rhode Island, I was no huge fan of Governor Gina Raimondo (D), who at the beginning of 2020 enjoyed the lowest approval in-state score of all 50 governors (while Mass. Gov. Charlie Baker [R] enjoyed the highest). Now she enjoys or shares one of the highest popular approvals (north of 80%) in the nation of home-state voters.
I have also been very impressed with her performance during this crisis, trying to thread the very small eye of the needle connecting public health with economic survival. She has been successful in reassuring Rhode Islanders at her 1 p.m. daily televised briefings at the same time that she’s been quite successful in encouraging everyone to follow the rules as the state slowly tries to navigate through 3 (or 4) phases of Reopening Rhode Island — although a great deal of credit, of course, belongs, of course, to the largely-observant people themselves. On a recent spot-check of retails stores, inspectors found 98% of employees wearing masks and 97% of customers.
Were it not for the need to balance the ticket not only by gender, but also regionally, ethnically, ideologically and stylistically (as well as religiously, since both Biden and Raimondo are observant Roman Catholics), I think Gina Raimondo might make a very good choice for the VP nomination.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
On the other hand, I’m not so impressed with Kamala Harris (a fellow Berkeleyan) because her style (which impresses some) is so antagonistic.
CG says
VP picks are often antagonistic by design.
There’s going to be no real convention. Probably no debates this cycle. No rallies. Whomever Biden picks will get very little attention and very little coverage and will just have the task of using online resources/social media etc, to rally up the base and raise money, and Harris can probably raise more than anybody else by virtue of being from California.
jamesb says
But she will be expected to be seen in the swing states and be comfortable…
No problem for a Minnesota US Senator
CG says
The Democrat VP candidate is probably not going to be seen anywhere besides tv interviews with friendly questioners and internet livestreams.
jamesb says
Then that’s gonna be dumb…
The campaign should be smart enough to target suburban women in the states that had Obama wins, then Trump wins, but now have them NOT happy now…
CG says
That’s on Biden himself primarily. He may not have to do much because Trump is unpopular with suburban women.
jamesb says
Every little bit helps….
jamesb says
Bingo DSD!….
My feeling and my wife’s especially about Harris…
CG says
Washington insiders would of course all say that behind closed doors Klobuchar is a lot “meaner” than Harris.
Again, I thought she was a real possibility until recently, but there were moments in the debate, especially in her interactions with Buttigieg that did not reflect well on her temperament.
jamesb says
Tough = Mean?
CG says
I wish Biden would pick Raimondo.. but that is not going to happen….
Cops are just not popular among the young voters that Democrats need. That is just a reality.
Of course, part of the blame can go to horrible cops in the news and the distrust they cause, and of course the majority of them are unfairly maligned by association.
Scott P says
Why do you “wish” Biden would pick Raimondo CG?
What difference does it make to you as someone committed to not even voting in the Presidential race?
jamesb says
Maybe a Biden staffer could read this?
CG says
They probably have a lot of time on their hands.
CG says
Things are getting really ugly in the Twin Cities tonight.
Of course I can understand how some people are legitimately angry and frustrated. There is never an excuse for violence or destruction though. Anything along those lines will only serve the purpose of helping Trump. He feeds on these divisions among Americans.
And the worst of the people in these situations are urban professional agitators (many of them white kids who grew up privileged) who joined Antifa or anarchist groups who look for any excuse to engage in mayhem.
jamesb says
You don’t tear up and loot your own neighbourhood….
NOT a GOOD Look,,,,
jamesb says
The people in the streets in Minnesota probably have canceled their US Senators chances of joining Biden…
They may have canceled Harris also….
The media is pissed at the State Troopers for arresting a CNN crew….
But this who thing may play to Trump…
ronnieevan says
Lots of uncertainty now for sure.
jamesb says
We’ll have to see how things go after things quiet down ….
