The 12-18 month normal comprehensive trail period that Dr. Fauci had been talking about has been waived….One can expect that other drugs to teat and prevent the virus will pushed to be prescribed after shortened initial positive testing periods…All drugs have sideffects….

BREAKING: The FDA is granting emergency authorization to remdesivir, a move that allows health care providers to administer the drug intravenously to treat covid-19 in adults and children hospitalized with severe disease. Earlier this week, Anthony Fauci announced that trial data showed the antiviral drug had a “clear-cut, significant, positive effect in diminishing the time to recovery.”
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office Friday afternoon, President Trump announced the F.D.A. approval and called it “an important treatment for hospitalized coronavirus patients.”
“It’s really a very promising situation,” Mr. Trump said.
Dr. Deborah Birx, the coordinator of the coronavirus task force, said that the F.D.A. approval of remdesivir “really illustrates what can happen in such a short time” noting how fast the approval followed the first known cases in the United States.
Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said earlier this week that the results were “a very important proof of concept” but not a “knockout.”
In a crisis like this any drug that shows an ability to help patients recover from the disease ,lessen its effects ,or shorten the period to recovery ,will be approved fairly quickly.
Fauci and others have used the 12-18 month period as the likely time for a vaccine to be available;however yesterday Fauci said given the Herculean and myriad efforts going forward ,it was possible a vaccine could be available around January.
He then noted with a smile that he had used the 12-18 month time frame originally in January of this year so his “prediction” might be at the lower end of the scale.
Nobody said the guy wasn’t quick on his feet!….

Since most of the “models” that have been predicting deaths from the coronavirus predicated on continuing mitigation efforts and with those efforts now easing in many states and even essentially ending in most of the southern states, we might expect to see the mortality “predictions “ begin to rise.
Indeed with the daily death rate still running at over a thousand a day,it could be pushing 100,000 by the end of May unless a fairly dramatic decline sets in fairly quickly.Even then the present forecasts of a little over seventy thousand seems rather optimistic as we are already over 60000.
NY which drove up to 50% of the numbers is down to LESS than 300 a day….
The other states seem to be driving the numbers now….
100,000 seems like reaching….
But we’ll have to see…

Remdesivir’s known therapeutic abilities are, so far, pretty limited.
If you’re already in the ICU with Covid-19, then it can reduce your time there from about 15 to about 11 days, which Dr Fauci said may not seem much, but would mean a very great deal to someone in the ICU and those tending that patient.
(Organizationally, of course, that would mean more patients could use the ICU within, say, two months, thus lessening the need for extra surge capacity.)
My point to Jack was that Fauci wasn’t half as excited about the drug as Trump and media indicated…

Fauci indeed was “impressed” (the word you used) not that the Drug was a solution .He explained its results were modest.What “impressed” him was that it was the first example of a drug that attacked the enzymes of the virus and that ,and here he alluded to his experience with the early AIDS treatments ,it is the first of the building blocks necessary for later more effective treatments.
