Wisconsin Governor relents ....

Wisconsin governor orders stop to in-person voting on eve of election politico.com/news/2020/04/0… via @politico
My Name Is Jack says
This came about because Republicans in the Legislature ,in a totally irresponsible act, refused to stop tomorrow’s primary.
Scott P says
Yes no reason this couldn’t have been delayed like the many other state primaries.
CG says
But not a word about how the Illinois Primary was ordered to proceed as scheduled on March 17 during a Stay at Home order?
CG says
By the way, a difference between the Wisconsin election and the Illinois primary election seems to be that “General Elections” were also on the ballot in the election scheduled for tomorrow. It was not just a primary. These are offices that are mandated to be filled before 4/20.
I think it is fine to delay primaries for public safety reasons, but when Trump and his allies suggest this happen in November, others will be changing their tune.
My Name Is Jack says
So?
What’s that have to do with anything?
You think that’s why the Republicans did it?
CG says
Why is there criticism of WI here (D Gov/R legislature, mixed election between primary and general) and there was none about IL (D Gov/D legislature. strictly primary)
CG says
Will someone here at least put their partisan hat aside enough to be willing to admit that IL was wrong then? Even if nobody was saying so at the time.
Obviously, some people contracted the virus in Illinois from going to vote.
CG says
The problem I see is why Wisconsin holds general elections in April during the same year as a national general election.
Hold them in November. Nonetheless, that is their Cheesehead law. Delaying a general election in the U.S. is basically unheard of. This is probably the first time.
jamesb says
Holly Shit!…
There WILL be a Wisconsin Primary tomorrow…

Breaking: Wisconsin Supreme Court blocks Gov. Evers’ order to postpone Tuesday’s election, despite his arguments in-person voting could endanger poll workers & voters.
Court’s conservative majority sided with Republicans who control state legislature and opposed delay.

Joe Biden leads Donald Trump 48-45 in Michigan.
Gary Peters leads John James 45-38 in Senate race.
President undecideds are structurally Democratic- voted for Clinton by 28, voting for Peters by 26, give Trump 8-68 approval. Same sort of picture we’ve seen in most swing states

Oh absolutely ,the Illinois primary should have been postponed.
My Name Is Jack says
How about you?
Will you be “changing your tune?”
CG says
I envision no circumstance in which the November 2020 election be postponed. It needs to be held.
My Name Is Jack says
Just to be clear…
Do you think the Wisconsin primary should proceed or not?
Yes or No?
CG says
I don’t really know enough about the situation,
If it was strictly a primary, I’d say fine, but they do have a general election scheduled and offices that will not be filled on time if it is delayed. So essentially, it is a localized version of what would be a November problem.
jamesb says
There ARE over 10 primaries on June 2…
My Name Is Jack says
Besides, according to Trump there is “light at the end of the tunnel.”
This whole thing will be over soon.
For sure it won’t be going on in November!

CG Democrats are working hard to ensure voting by mail, absentee, and other voting methods are in place for November just in case. Trump and Republicans are opposed to these methods for fear they will cost Republicans elections. What is your thought?
jamesb says
There HAS been several days of leveling in NY which means US. numbers on the whole , also in other countries….
THAT does NOT mean things are over…
They are NOT…
By May and June there should be a decline and governors are gonna have figure out how to cut back restrictions….
The economy on the other hand ?
THAT is gonna lag far longer…
Trump’s numbers are gonna continue to take a beat down across the board, but not among much of his base….
CG says
He’ll try to get his election delayed. Just watch. He plays this day by day and will turn on a dime.
And he’ll say “look at Wisconsin and all the other states that did it…”
jamesb says
No way is THAT to be tolerated ….
CG says
These days are running into each other.
Nonetheless, by 3/16 in Illinois, they had already closed all dine in eating and banned gatherings of more than 10 people.
The primary was held on 3/17 and nobody here at least expressed any concern. (the head of the Chicago Board of Elections got into a big fight with Pritzker that day about not having in person voting take place and Pritzker said it must happen)
CG says
Vote by mail should be used under limited circumstances as it traditionally had been. (I did it when I was in college and away from my home precinct). It is not ideal and can led itself to fraud.
If there is still a health crisis in November, we can maybe make a one time exception.
Scott P says
Quite a few states in the west use vote by mail without issue.
jamesb says
I could be wrong…
Maybe DSD or CG can check this but MOST states have absentee, mail-in or on-line voting ALREADY in place?
I see NO reason to NOT have voting 8 months from now in November for President…
CG says
yeah, and those states do not have the “history” we have in Illinois and other places.
jamesb says
The Election Assistance Commission (EAC) is speeding up the process of sending recently appropriated funds to states to help bolster elections during the coronavirus pandemic.
The EAC announced late last week that it planned to send funding to states that they can use for measures such as boosting mail-in and absentee voting, along with hiring more poll workers and buying sanitization supplies, by the end of next week….
CG says
I assume every state has some form of that, but early voting is still in person voting and plenty of people would not vote if they could not vote in person, per custom.
Things will likely be “safer” for all of us in November, but if Trump is behind, he will try to play any card in the deck.
jamesb says
I agree on the Russians…
But I somehow think with ALL the on-line stuff now?
Some states WILL go for it…
CG says
On-line voting for an actual general election would truly be a bad idea.
The Russians would be licking their chops.
Maybe in the year 3020.
Scott P says
Republicans always want fewer people voting, But postponing a general election is one form of suppression that would certainly end their party.
CG says
And what do Democrats propose to do about cheating and fraud?
Voter nullification is every bit as bad as voter suppression.
jamesb says
Cheating and fraud will ALWAYS be around….
So will voter suppression , eh?
CG says
I remember when the Democrat Governor of North Carolina once mused about postponing Obama’s reelection.
And you have some Democrats now who say we shouldn’t hold any more Presidential primaries at all. They think that it’s a baseball game with a rain delay or something.
CG says
Voter fraud must always be prevented and punished. That is why an overwhelming majority of Americans support Voter ID laws.
Some Democrats seem to shrug their shoulders though. They will take what they can get.
My Name Is Jack says
Yeah Republicans never want any votes that are not fair and honestly obtained.
CG says
Opportunity should be taken away from anyone who would wish to benefit from cheating.
Obviously, both parties, and all campaigns, want to get the most favorable electorate possible, but this is a different matter.
As discussed before, fraud is most likely to nullify votes and potentially change outcomes in local races or primaries.
jamesb says
“A little-known Washington nonprofit has filed a lawsuit against Fox News, claiming the news station, its parent companies and owners violated the state’s Consumer Protection Act and acted in bad faith by disseminating false information about the novel coronavirus through its television news broadcasts and minimized the danger posed by the virus as COVID-19 began to explode into a pandemic,” Seattle Times reports….
Politicalwire…
jamesb says
Neither did Federal Judges….
Keith says
So predictable. The conservatives on the Supreme Court ruled today that in this extraordinary situation, absentee ballots in Wisconsin have to be mailed by tomorrow in order to be counted, even though due to the deluge of more than 1 million timely requests, election officials couldn’t get ballots to the recipients in time for them to be mailed back by tomorrow.
The irony is that the Supreme Court issued its own order postponing oral arguments because of the risk of transmitting the virus, but the want Wisconsin voters to mingle with the unwashed. So the justices, their staffs, and high powered government or corporate lawyers appearing before the court can’t be expected to show up in person to do their jobs, but ordinary citizens should risk their lives to exercise their fundamental right to vote.
We should not be surprised by this result. Kavanaugh (the preppy mauler), Roberts, Alito, and Gorsuch all got their jobs because of voter suppression.
So a million voters will be disenfranchised tomorrow by the Republican majority on the Court, but we all have to be more concerned about non-existent vote fraud. I see. But voter suppression isn’t really real.
We have already heard the Republican mantra about voter fraud here earlier today, and, of course, Trump opposes vote by mail so all Republicans do. But, it works, and is safe especially given the current public health crisis. But, we can expect lots of arguments against it being repeated here as we approach the election season.
We have a corrupt and useless Administration in the White House, that needs to be removed. Anyone that makes “whatabout” excuses, backhanded excuses, for their dirty dealing not only condones this corruption but should be ashamed.
My Name Is Jack says
Republican claims of “vote fraud” remains one of the most notorious “red herrings “ around.
Remember that Republican Sec Of State in Kansa,Kobach, who did some investigation that found aGrand total of SIX improperly cast votes in the whole state?
Trump even appointed this goof to some Commission he established.Like a good Republican he wants to believe in massive vote fraud too,
The Commission was later unceremoniously disestablished.
It’s an obsession with Republicans. They can’t prove it but they know it’s there!
Scott P says
Trump said what all Republicans are thinking last week. Making voting easier with vote by mail severely reduces Republicans chances of winning. Of course our once and future Republican on here stated the same claptrap about non existent “voter fraud”.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Time was when Democrats were equally likely to object to mail ballots (although not to early voting and same-day registration) because Republicans were more likely to use them, while Democrats were more likely to visit their polling places.
And, much as it chills me to write this, I’ve always shared the fear that the President expressed that once you go to no-excuse-needed mail ballots, you negate the hard-sought and hard-sought-for Australian or secret ballot, either to a pushy campaign worker “collecting” your ballot, or just to a naturally-curious member of your own household.

Interesting story from NY Times on how air pollution makes Covid-19 worse.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/07/climate/air-pollution-coronavirus-covid.html?referringSource=articleShare
So while CG-and I imagine Republicans overall-may try to scapegoat pubkic transit in spreading covid a large contributor to making the virus worse is pollution caused by burning fuel–cars.
It’s also worth noting that some other areas where we are seeing rapid spread are cities like New Orleans and Detroit–and the state of Florida–which do not have extensive mass transit like NYC. Meanwhile San Francisco–a dense city with many forms of popular mass transit has been much more successful in stopping the spread than those other places.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
Densely-populated cities like Boston, New York and San Francisco have relatively dense public transit that’s much used by residents (and commuters) who can’t hack the traffic and parking hassles.

Lindsay Graham says Trump s re-election will depend on his response to Coronavirus crisis.
With his approvals as to his handling of the matter now falling to the approximate level of his “base,”Graham probably wishes he hadn’t said that.
It doesn’t matter .That base won’t desert him. They don’t care about his lies and exaggerations.Indeed, they revel in them.Their Only care is “getting them libruls.” so when the hated “librul” media expresses their incredulity at his blatant falsehoods, the Cult applauds vigorously. The truth doesn’t matter to these types. Its all about their hate and their dogma.
Yeah a lot of people might due due to this idiots blazing incompetence. So what?To them, nothing, nothing is more important than owning “them libruls.”
