Here we go?
Rep. Justin Amash (I-Mich.) announced on Tuesday that he has “launched an exploratory committee” to seek the Libertarian Party’s 2020 nomination seek the Libertarian Party’s 2020 nomination for a possible third-party presidential run.
Why it matters: Amash gained notoriety last year when he came out as the lone House Republican to support the impeachment of President Trump following the publication of the Mueller report. He later switched his party affiliation to independent.
What they’re saying:
“For something new. For a government that secures our rights. For equality before the law. For an end to cronyism. For a government that fulfills its purpose and recognizes its limits. For practical approaches based in humility and trust of the people. For an honest, principled president who will defend the Constitution and put individuals first.”

Per Wikipedia the Libertarian Party is to hold their convention May 21-25 in Austin, TX.
I know they are a bunch of no gubment types but what are they gonna do if the city says no go on their convo?

Dungeons and Dragons chat room.

The people who would show up at a Libertarian Convention would literally walk around licking each others faces to prove a point.

Yeah they are pretty nuts.
Gary Johnson was the kindly pot smoking dude wirh trusty Bill Weld as his running mate. He was able to get more votes than any other LP nominee by far.
Amash is known to political junkies but not overall. Not sure how much of a draw he would be as a nominee.
As I’ve said before the third party vote is almost certain to be much lower than 4 yrs ago.

Bill Kristol on Amash
“The price of a second Trump term is too high to be playing dice with it”
I agree.

Just heard in an interview were Amash said he was in favor of monthly stipends to Americans and seemed to rip the $1200 stimulus as being too stingy.
Yeah that’ll go over well with the Libertarians.
Scott P says
Justin Amash says he is “confident” he can win the Presidency as a Libertarian.
And here I thought this guy might have some brains.

Well he shares a trait it with his fellow Republican Trump.
They’re both delusional.

Dr. Jo Jorgensen, the Libertarian Party VP candidate in 1996 and a present candidate for the Presidential nomination, has obliquely criticized Justin Amash ,noting that he is an “independent “ in Congess and wonders why he isn’t openly calling himself a Libertarian Congressman.
Scott P says
Yeah I kinda wondered that too. Amash had the opportunity to label himself a member of the Libertarian Party when he quit the GOP.
As I noted yesterday his interview where he called for monthly stipends to be sent to all Americans will probably turn off the hardcore LP members. Unless they are so enamored with having the closest thing to a household name on the ticket that they will forgive it.

I saw the monthly money pitch….
Which IS a joke?

The Libertarian Party ,through the years ,has been known for taking candidates for the same or similar reasons.
In 1976 their candidate was Roger McBride ,whose claim to fame was as aNixon elector in 1972 he had reneged and voted for LP candidate John Hospers .A few years later McBride returned to the Republican Party and formed a group of Republican libertarians.
Four years later the LP gave their VP nomination to David Koch of Koch brothers fame after he pledged to self fund the campaign.Koch later returned to the GOP.
Former Ga. Cong. Bob Barr was the LP candidate in 2008.Three years later he was back in the Republican Party in an unsuccessful bid to reclaim a House seat.
And then we all know about Bill Weld the LP VP candidate in 2016 who just recently ended his quixotic effort to unseat Donald Trump.
Gary Johnson ,the LP candidate in 2012 and 2016 , remains an LP member as far as I know. He was the party’s Senate candidate in NM in 2018 and unsurprisingly came in behind the two major party candidates.
So Amash probably can be the party nominee but history tells us after his defeat ,he will probably return to the Republican fold.

In the fall of 1992 the Libertarian Party nominee actually spoke to my college class. Andre Marrou–one of the more obscure nominees of that party, and that’s saying something. With Ross Perot getting almost 20% of the vote that year as an Independent other third parties were pushed even more to the margins.
CG says
He actually did register this week as a Libertarian with the Clerk of the House. First ever member of the party to serve in Congress.

So there Jo Jorgensen!
My Name Is Jack says
Well at least Amash will get a footnote in the books about Congress.

Actually, that idea isn’t totally alien to all Libertarians, since Milton Friedman proposed a guaranteed wage as a substitute for all the various social benefits, no doubt on the theory that the government shouldn’t be directing individual choices.
