The stock market has jumped up 500 points on what seems to be the first drug treatment that works against the coronavirus without significant side effects in the short run…
The the name of the drug is Remdesivir…
The question is?
When will it be available to the rest of the country?
Will it be held for another year of test’s?
My Name Is Jack says
While we wait on a vaccine which ,as stated here ,might be a year to a year and a half off, developing medications that save lives and/or lessens the severity of the symptoms of Covid 19 is what would really provide the oft stated “light at the end of the tunnel.”
Much more so than ill informed rosy talk about “reopening “ spouted off by the clueless President and other politicians around the country.
Here in SC Trump flunky Henry McMaster is on the bandwagon while standing right next to him , the states Chief epidemiologist, cautioned that without much more testing such might not be the wisest course.
Ah the Age of Trump!
jamesb says
They won’t wait 12 to 18 months….
My Name Is Jack says
Well I am not for “reopening” on any large scale until testing procedures are in place and working.
How about you? What do you think ought to happen?
You’ve been strangely quiescent of late since you early days of predicting “civil disorder?
Who are you with the Democrats, who take a position similar to mine?Or the Republicans, who like the leader Trump ,say “yeah testing is nice ,but we have to get reopened more than anything and yes lots more cases and lots more deaths buy hey that’s the way it goes!”
jamesb says
I HAVE said the same thing from the jump…
Gradual lifting of restrictions with testing…
Some states will do so…
Some will not…
NY is the epicenter of the virus so it is MORE important to do so…
I have pointed out that officials… not scientists ARE under YUGE pressure to move to lift the restriction sooner than the 12 to 18 months the experts want for vaccine trials…
Drugs that treat the virus i think will get widely available by Late July…
The vaccine later…
The NY numbers for hospital’s has dropped dramatically…
The dearth numbers have not…
Keith says
Really James, you said the same thing from the jump?
I check here daily, don’t usually post because we’re too busy with our food bank work, but I only recall you saying things like “folks won’t stand for this much longer.” Or, “maybe they will, maybe they won’t.”
It’s immoral and lethal to reopen things (gradually or not) without testing and without a vaccine. Because if we do, the virus will flare up and kill even more people.
Right now the virus has infected meat packing plants in the Midwest and the Governor of South Dakota (a Republican) refuses to shut down local businesses. Florida, a state swirling in the virus, is planning to reopen its beaches this weekend (another Republican Governor). And Texas has its own unique form of crazy. Those wackos in Michigan yesterday looked like the night of the living dead. They hate that woman Governor who is trying to keep them alive.
We have a Republican Administration that has been useless in this crisis, and now Trump wants to liberate those states who have shutdown.
What type of leader says things like “I take no responsibility, I can open things ups, but then the next day, it’s up to the Governors?” He can’t even keep his lies straight.
I really don’t think you have any idea of how much of a shit show this has become James.

Update...
Things look good for Remdesivir….
Gilead Sciences announced Wednesday that a division of the National Institutes of Health will be releasing positive early results of a clinical trial of its drug remdesivir, a potential treatment for coronavirus, sending markets sharply up at opening of trading.
“Gilead Sciences is aware of positive data emerging from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ (NIAID) study of the investigational antiviral remdesivir for the treatment of covid-19,” the company said in an early-morning statement. “We understand that the trial has met its primary endpoint and that NIAID will provide detailed information at an upcoming briefing.”
Gilead did not provide specifics or characterize the results in the brief statement. NIAID confirmed it planned an announcement later Wednesday at a briefing by President Trump’s coronavirus task force….

Fauci isn’t that impressed though…
My Name Is Jack says
That’s not true.
I watched his comments.
He called it “ good news” and compared it to how the battle in developing AIDs drugs began.
He explained how this was the first drug that showed definite promise in attacking enzymes of the disease and that was a key to further therapies being developed.
You have no idea what you’re talking about.
jamesb says
The direct piece comments Jack….
…..’The drug accelerated the recovery time of infected patients by 31 percent, from 15 days in patients who got a placebo to 11 days in people treated with remdesivir, Fauci said. But it only reduced the death rate from 11 percent to 8 percent, which Fauci said lacked statistical significance.
“The data shows that remdisivir has a clear-cut, significant, positive effect in diminishing the time to recovery,” Fauci said. “Although a 31 percent improvement doesn’t seem like a knockout 100 percent, it is a very important proof of concept…’

Doesn’t matter…
As I thought?
There WILL be this drug and others in the pipe line within months…
Not the 12-18 month old time table…
My Name Is Jack says
You said that Fauci “wasn’t impressed.”
That was not true I proved it .
Now you’re obfuscating as usual.
jamesb says
Matter of interpretation ….
My Name Is Jack says
No,
Simple lack of reading comprehension.
For some reason you believe that “clear cut evidence” and “good news” mean “unimpressed.”
Rather than admit you either misread ,or failed to read the entirety of Fauci remarks, and, as usual I might add ,you resort to trying to obfuscate the issue.
Of course you often don’t even understand the posts made by those who post here.
Expecting you to understand Fauci comments was probably a stretch in any case.
jamesb says
I stand by my comment….
I get the impression he would like a strong drug….
We do NOT have to agree on this….
jamesb says
Fauci admits Jack…
That he IS being driven by the politics of the situation and has ability to strop this as I have pointed out here several times…There will be NO 12-18 month testing like he wanted…
THAT was BASED on science…
But the actions are NOW driven by ethics, politics and economics…Notice he used the word ‘good’…
….He said the results in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) clinical trial showed some “quite good news” with remdesivir being the first drug shown to benefit coronavirus patients.
Fauci, who is the director of the NIAID, said he took his first opportunity to make the announcement to avoid leaks of partial information, which he said was already happening.
“It was purely driven by ethical concerns,” Fauci told Reuters in an interview.
“I would love to wait to present it at a scientific meeting, but it’s just not in the cards when you have a situation where the ethical concern about getting the drug to people on placebo dominates the conversation,” he added….

jamesb says
In fact as the piece says?
(….The trial also almost showed the drug helped people survive, but the data was below statistical significance, Reuters reported.
But other health professionals expressed concern that the Trump administration was increasing hope for the drug before presenting the full proof that it works. Scientists told Reuters they thought the presentation of the results at the White House was inappropriate, as they had expected a news release, a briefing at a medical meeting or a scientific journal….)
Other scientists are NOT happy with the time line on this…
But they aren’t Fauci…
Fauci HAS to play the game to stay where he is to keep some sort of control on the White House…
Come On Jack…
Figure the game out…
You’re better that this….
My Name Is Jack says
And you proceed to illustrate my point.
None of your posts here have any relationship to your erroneous assertion the “Fauci was not impressed” ,nor anything I’ve said in response.
Instead ,you once again begin a whole different topic that has nothing to do with what I was addressing.
As for that idiotic “come on Jack,” “you are better than this” routine?
I’ve heard this overused line before for.I treat it with the same contempt I treat most of your juvenile absurdities.
