Yea….
We are ALSO impatient….
But he has everything delivered to him…
He can get his test results back in 5 minutes..
And he can control his environment …
Most of us can’t…
But we have to wait for the numbers so our Governor’s can make the restrictions ramp down, level by level…
President Trump warned that America’s “toughest week” is coming up, predicting “there will be death” as the number of Covid-19 cases surges in the days ahead, Politico reports.
He also announced that New York would be getting “about a thousand military people — nurses, doctors, lots of other people because that’s what they need.”
But Trump also signaled his growing impatience with the stringent social distancing measures states had put in place around the country, which have sent the economy spiraling rapidly downward.
Said Trump: “We have to open our country again. We have to open our country again. We don’t want to be doing this for months and months and months.”
…
“In a conference call with major league sports commissioners on Saturday, President Trump said he believes the NFL season should start on time in September, ESPN reports.
“Trump also said he hopes to have fans back in stadiums and arenas by August and September, sources said, although it is currently unclear if medical experts find that to be a realistic timeline amid the current coronavirus pandemic.”
My Name Is Jack says
Yes he is and we are entering a very dangerous time.
He’s acting like we are going to go through a couple of bad weeks and then we can start to “open our country again.”
That is a recipe for a disaster.
jamesb says
The numbers WILL determine things for there GOVERNORS…Not him…
The economy WILL come down on him I believe ….
Again?
I hope the GOPer’s remember how their guy didn’t care about their problems…
They do tend to NOT hold him accountable
Scott P says
So we heard last night that Trump supports the same policies as the left wing of the Democratic Party and Bernie Sanders last night.
Well if that’s the case I’m sure Trump is fully in support of efforts to make mail in and absentee voting easier right?
Nope, in lockstep with the rest of the GOP opposed to more voting because they know it will seal their electoral fate.
CG might as well file his recurring assertion that Trump is a secret liberal Democrat alongside having a center right independent candidate this year–under Fiction.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-gop-challenge-efforts-to-make-voting-easier-amid-coronavirus-pandemic/2020/04/04/61f889fe-75bb-11ea-87da-77a8136c1a6d_story.html
CG says
*some* of the same policies. Why are you trying to be an absolutist?
jamesb says
CG?
He did have vestiges when he first got the job…
But they ARE LONG gone…
He rows with those who are loyal to him …..
And he hasn’t spoken to Pelosi since the SOTU ….
Actually?
His party people have top drag him back to the middle these days on some things he just can’t see…
CG says
Angry populism and the politics of resentment cuts both ways. Trump and Sanders both traffic in it, but using different styles.
jamesb says
True THAT….
Capitalism viewed from the top….
Socialism viewed from the top…
Scott P says
The “politics of resentment” has been the bread and butter of Rush Limbaugh, FOX News and other conservative media for years and years now.
I wouldn’t classify fighting for a living wage in the same vein as calling public school teachers “elitists”. Now who is being “absolutist”?
Which reminds me CG. Are you still like most Republicans adamantly opposed to minimum wage increases? Should the essential workers providing you groceries, fast food and taking care of nursing home residents in this pandemic still receive a poverty wage because “the market”?
Scott P says
Any small overlap of Trump/Sanders support is made up of people who don’t give a whit about policies. Tbey simply like bluster and want to “tear down the system”. .The biggest enablers of Trump are Republicans in the Senate and House. Not a one of them supports single payer health care, slashing bloated military budgets, a living wage or higher taxes on the wealthy.
My Name Is Jack says
This whole thing about Trump/Sanders I find amusing.
Everyone agrees with someone every once in awhile.
Hell CG admits he agrees with Trump often.Once I said that he agreed with him 90% of the time.He resisted that ,but then seemed ok when I said 70% of the time.
So what’s the big deal that Sanders and Trump(and presumably most Congressional Republicans since they inevitably support Trump on everything, their uh “principles(sic) notwithstanding) agree on some things?
Sanders intensely opposes Trump as President and in the end will urge their support of Biden.
Scott P says
Paid fanily leave was one issue CG said Trump shared with Sanders suppporters that CG still opposes due to his “principle”. Opposing paid family leave during a pandemic is a bold move. As would be opposing loving wages for essential workers during these times. But hey “principle”
My Name Is Jack says
CG ,like most so called “conservatives,” seem to suspend their “principles” in this pandemic.
I mean what’s going on now is Socialism” in its purest form. They justify it as necessary in a national emergency.
So I presume their new manta is ,”Socialism “is evil, except when it’s not, and we “conservatives will tell you when it’s not.”
I guess I’m back to,
Conservatism is bunk.
jamesb says
GOPer’s gonna go with almost ANYTHING that looks good for them politically and is another disguised hand out to big business…
To them?
It’s capitalism….
The rich get richer ….
They don’t get the $1,200….
They get BILLIONS MORE‼️
jamesb says
Opposing sick leave and paying ur people if you can afford thru unexpected hard times that are beyond their control IS just plain WRONG heartless….
Of course there WILL be companies and businesses that do so and get money for rhe purpose of paying employees and won’t
jamesb says
Already prices have gone up in the stores and online….
The only thing holding low is gas and Trump want other countries to cut production so the prices will go back up….
Something that made me smile?
Trump’s losing money with all this…
Something that didn’t make me smile
Trump family guys are sending eviction letter out ….
jamesb says
The sooner the Better for ALL involved…
jamesb says
Heck, even I gave THAT up….
It’s LONG GONE!…..
Keith says
He’s long gone because he never existed. Donald Trump is a manifestation of the Republican Party, they created the huge racist asshole and still worship at his feet.
The disconnect between the fact that this huge gaping asshole in the White House is supported by over 95% of the admitted Republican electorate and the few, and I do mean few, Republicans that find him morally disagreeable is wider than Lindsay Graham’s rear end after a night with a DC male hooker.
It’s time to reject and denounce those people. They are unpatriotic. This Republican President is killing people through his incompetence and narcissism and people who excuse him or support those who support him are unpatriotic. It’s as simple as that.
My Name Is Jack says
Religious huckster Franklin Graham unsurprisingly blames the coronavirus on “a world that has turned its back on God.”
Now I find Graham and the whole cabal of Right Wing evangelical “reverends” some of the most contemptible people in the world and pay no attention to their rantings.
However ,for those who believe their nonsense?Perhaps the almighty is exacting his revenge on them for electing Donald Trump President?
I mean is their any doubt that Graham and his ilk would be shouting this type rhetoric far and wide if Hillary Clinton was now President?
Graham and the rest of these bandits ought to be repenting their use of religion to line their pockets and lie to their gullible believers into believing that the likes of Trump and his minion of Right Wing goofballs were some kind of divinity sanctioned saviors.
Disgusting is too nice a word.
Scott P says
Good point Jack.
Someone should ask Graham how this is happening in a country where we are saying Merry Christmas again.
That’s a line Trump has said many times at his rallies–with much applause from conservative evangelicals.
CG says
It’s so comforting to know that while there is a Pandemic going on and we are all literally at risk, some find it worthy to use differences of political opinion to attack me in a personal and ad hominem way, and in many cases inaccurately too. This truly is some “Lord of the Flies” stuff.
I am very comfortable with my beliefs though and yes, my “principles” too.. (I have spelled it right.) Now, do I have to spend a large part of my day here on some sort of show trial for your amusement or can I focus on what really matters?
jamesb says
Different Strokes for Difference Folks…
jamesb says
I asked this before….
What’s the story over at HHR?
They Gung-Ho For Trump still?
Making up excuses?
CG says
they fight among each other. I haven’t been posting there.

If you’re so interested why not just click on over.
All the comments are public.
You can read them yourself.
Most are confirmed Trumpites to my observation the several times I’ve checked over there.
CG is right though. They constantly argue with each other, mostly over who is most committed to Trump ,even if they disagree with his particular stance on something.
jamesb says
I have better things to do then to click over to them arguing among themselves….
Thanks for the info….
CG says
you are stuck at home, so you might as well find out for yourself..
The biggest fight over there now is about Dr. Fauci. One of the clowns there (who has been there for years) hates him because he once praised Hillary and even the other Trump defenders are giving her a hard time over that.
jamesb says
Fauci is a ‘expert’…the rest of ur reasons are unnecessary
Scott P says
You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.
If you don’t want to answer if you still oppose paid family leave or paying workers keeping us alive a living wage you can feel free to “focus on what really matters” as you say.
My own opinion is that damn straight we need to discuss these issues right now. Thoughts and prayers? Sure. But also raise the damn minimum wage, keep reforming health care and raise taxes on the billionaires!!
CG says
minimum wage-
For one thing, where would you draw the line? It can always be higher, can’t it? So, what is your number?
The only people who should really be making minimum wage are teenage fast food and retail workers in their first jobs. It is a misnomer to somehow conflate that with “workers keeping us alive.” The higher the minimum wage gets, the higher the price for consumers of course, but also the less these entry level young workers will be hired and the more automation we will see. That has negatives of course.
When the left talks about minimum wage, it is as if they believe people will be making minimum wage for a long time or for life. That is not the way it works. An entry level worker who shows a modicum of responsibility and effectiveness at the job will quickly get a raise, and so on and so on as they climb the ladder of democratic capitalism.
Paid family leave? It should be up to the company of course, and how wonderful if large companies can do so for their employees. Those internal policies should generate loyalty both with the workforce and consumers.
However, not every business can afford to do that and stay in business. That is simply a reality. If somebody has to take time off, they are able to, based on current law, but when the employer has to hire someone else to do that same job during the time being, they also should not be forced to pay two people for a job that only one is doing.
Perhaps we also should discuss Scott how your well-meaning but misguided past advocating for tremendously more mass transit at the expense of people having the right to own their own vehicle would make this Pandemic so much worse. The sad need for social distancing means that we need more autonomy and a focus on public transportation has serious health effects.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
When Rhode Island extended Family Leave, she did so through the state’s (employee-funded) Temporary Disability Insurance [TDI] rather than (insofar as I know) making it a mandate on employers, who in RI are overwhelmingly small businesses (and, by the way, the ones who will be so crippled by the near-partial shutdown that many of them can’t last more than a couple of months more before closing for good).
Now to my lay understanding (I wish Zreebs could help here), that would suggest either that TDI’s funds would be closer to being tapped out, or that there would have to be a significant increase in the (employee-funded) payroll tax for TDI (Unemployment contributions come just from employers), but this is one subject about which I haven’t seen any discussion.
Scott P says
So typical Republican blah blah market stiff. Got it.
Public transportation is a necessity for many Americans. If you don’t think they should earn a living wage how are they supposed to buy a car, afford insurance, etc if you get your wish and shut down buses and trains?
CG says
There you go again, creating straw men. Let me know when you can actually “debate” intellectually and not just lash out emotionally.
Scott P says
Germany has much more extensive public transportation and has been much more effective than the US in stemming the virus.
CG says
They shut down public transportation,
And they also have the Autobahn.
When something like this happens, clearly public transportation has to be stopped or severely curtailed.
My Name Is Jack says
So what’s your point?
Are you opposed to public transportation?
CG says
No, but they are clearly a health and safety problem for people at a time like this.
Scott has in the past said that he would envision private car ownership all but disappearing everywhere in America and for there to only be mass public transportation. That would not be good right now.
My Name Is Jack says
Maybe not ,but there are lots of things that are not “good” right now.
And it doesn’t have anything to do with his original point that lots of people can’t afford cars.
We need a much more extensive public transportation system in this country ,as most western nations have.
Using the current pandemic and the extraordinary means being used to curtail it as an argument against public transportation is the ultimate strawman.
CG says
The concept of making it illegal or difficult for people to choose to own or drive their own vehicle has always been a dangerous one.
CG says
I never said a word about longtime curtailment, but obviously we have much more death and many more infections across the country and world because people were infected while using public transportation. One only needs to look at New York City.
Let’s make sure people have the right to have options in how to transport.
My Name Is Jack says
I doubt that cars will ever completely disappear although that might be a good idea for all sorts of reasons.
However, that has nothing to do with desiring a robust modern public transportation system in this country.
We just can’t keep on building roads particularly in growing metropolitan areas .
CG says
and the reality is that public transportation may never be used as widely again or at least for a very long time.
So, we have to accept that reality. Another reality may be that more people will be telecommuting than ever before, so perhaps there is some level of mitigation there.
jamesb says
The answer will NEVER be public transportation. which is HUGLY capital intensive….
It is the most effective…
But after this crisis ?
I think there will be second thoughts …
Of course in densely populated area’s there is NO other way…
As a result of all of this?
On-line WILL be accelerated for a LOT of things…
It will be less secure …
But the virus I would think HAS pushed things…
THAT means less real estate…
Less offices…
And the support system for those things…
We ARE at a cross roads in the way America and the world operates…
My Name Is Jack says
Many people if they want to work are going to have to and that a reality to.
Telecommuting?
Lots of these people who rely on public transportation don’t have computers .Anyway ,restaurant workers janitors and the like occupations don’t lend themselves to tekecommuting.
CG says
Of course some people will have to continue to use public transportation with the understanding that the need to do so caused much death and sickness around the world in 2020. Hopefully, we will never have to deal with something like this again.
The whole point is America should be about freedom and those who wish to own their own vehicle and have the means to do so should not face government backed obstacles in exercising that choice.
Right now, many people who have “essential jobs” and who would typically use mass transit (as many suburbanites do) have to drive themselves.
My Name Is Jack says
So let me see if I get your position.
We should curtail public transportation because of the Pandemic.
And Scott advocated the government taking away people’s right to own and drive a car as public transportation develops.
Have I got it right?
CG says
No.
As long as this virus remains contagious and shut down orders are in effect, public transportation should be curtailed. After this crisis ends, people can make their own choice. There will be risks about sitting with people on a crowded subway just like there are to driving on the highway. People should be able to make their own choices without government trying to force them to do one thing or another.
jamesb says
Some public transportation HAS been curtailed in NYC….
Workers got sick or some ain’t coming to work…
I see the buses..
Few people on them…
But they cannot sit 6′ apart…
Same I would think with airplanes…
More planes parked each day…
I would assume the belly US Mail and packages are the thing that keeps they flying….
My Name Is Jack says
Who has advocated government forcing people onto public transportation?
Even in your original post you said Scott “envisioned” a future when cars would disappear.
I didn’t see where he said the “government “ should require that people take public transportation.
Regardless of this type of silly argument?
Public transportation will continue to grow in the future for the reasons I’ve discussed.
Maybe you don’t like that.Too bad.
No one is taking your gun or your car.
Relax.
CG says
Scott has in the past, before this episode in history, suggested that gas taxes, etc, be so high that it would be unaffordable for people to drive cars, so that they would then be forced into mass transit or bicycles.
I said he was “well intentioned” although I consider such a position to be very, very misguided, and we see now the unexpected consequences of such a dreamworld. Just think how much worse things would be.
CG says
I don’t think public transportation is going to grow. I think it is going to take a major hit. I think things such as Uber and Lyft will grow even faster. There will probably also be an effort to put shields and windows between the front and back seats.
CG says
Now, I must go drive about 2 miles to move my laundry from the washing machine to the dryer and then drive back and wait about 75 minutes so I can go back and get it out of the dryer.
Scott P says
For the record I never advocated that public car ownership be banned. Ridiculous. I did advocate raising gas taxes to pay for better infrastructure and more mass transit.
As to Germany–yes they have the Autobahn. I have driven on it. It’s a highway like every other European country has–just with a different name.. If Germany has shut down public transportation temporarily due to the virus that is one thing. They sure as hell aren’t going to dismantle public transportation. Nor will any European country, nor any Asian country with an advanced system. Many of those countries have survived pandemics that did not hit our shores and they still have trains and buses.
CG doesn’t like public transportation. I get it. Just like he doesn’t like legalized marijuana.
The truth is between self driving cars and more mass transit private car ownership is going to be on the wane in future years.
CG says
I have nothing at all against public transportation. I would likely use it more if it were feasible. It’s not feasible for many people though and never will be. It should be about choice.
Germany is not “doing better” against the virus because they have public transportation. It is because they did better with testing and other factors. The public transpiration made it worse for obvious reasons.
People here always try to twist everything I say to extreme examples when I most certainly did not say those things. I made it very clear that Scott was talking about raising taxes on people so that they would be forced to not have cars.
That’s not the kind of America people want to live in, even most Democrats.
Scott P says
And for the record church pews can spread the virus just as easily as subway cars or bus benches.
I wonder if CG thinks we should curtail megachurches the same way he wants to curtail mass transit.
CG says
Right now, yeah.
I never at all suggested public transportation should be curtailed in “normal times” and its the height of intellectual dishonest to suggest I ever have.
Of course we should want to go back to having religious services and sporting events and concerts and festivals and everything else. People should be able to use their own judgment and make their own choices whether to go or not, just like they should about driving a car or going on a subway, etc.
Scott P says
CG so you say you would choose to use public transportation more if it were feasible.
That’s what I want too. Our public policies have promoted cars and highways over mass transit so that the choice to use it or not is as unfeasible to many Americans as it is for you.
Yet you attack my policies which only seek to level the playing field and give people more options.
Do you not see that?
Keith says
That’s because they have a much more effective leader in every way Scott.
It was implied here that somehow, because marijuana is legal now in Illinois, the State’s virus infection rate would most likely go up. I didn’t know folks smoked dope on the Orange Line, or any other mass transit line, in Chicago. But they sure do smoke in their cars, and have for years.
Effective control of the virus required fast action from our public officials. So happy that I live in California where the Governor and local mayors took quick action. Too bad about poor Jack in South Carolina or the other red states that have ignored this pandemic. Illinois has done well under Governor Pritzker in public education and their attempts to flatten the curve of the virus. Can you imagine what a disaster Bruce Rainer would have been in this situation. Actually, there are only two Republican Governors in the country who have done a good job in this crisis — and they sure ain’t popular with Trump or their fellow Republicans.
But, Republicans everywhere are pushing back on restrictions. Take for example, Wisconsin. The Republicans want the Democratic Governor to open the churches on Easter Sunday (a disaster in waiting), and have gone to court to try and stop his opening the absentee voting process to make voting this Tuesday safer and easier for folks. Interesting several Republican leaders have been caught lately saying that if everyone votes they lose. That will be the next big fight here for November.
This virus ain’t going away anytime soon. It may fade in the summer, but roar back in cooler weather. You can expect Trump and his Republican followers to try to use every trick to suppress voting this fall.
Like I said, only one alternative this fall — a vote for Joe Biden. I just sent him another $250, I have no other place to spend it.
